The Charity works to achieve the above objedive through the use of visual workshops that show famous paintings and sculpture in schools and adult wups including prisons. horlleless ¢tr¢s, bospiGes and residential care homes. Th¢ workshops are given in an interactive way $0 that pupils (aad leachers) learn through question and answer, copying poses, tracing the p&intsr's brush marks on the screen 8nd other baDds-on activities. Achlevements and perforniance The team consists of 10 workshop leadetB, 5 working in London and the South Eas¢ l Covering Nortbumberland and Tyne & Wear, I covering Gloucestersbire, WorsterSb1rc and Herefordshire, l in Oxfordshire, l in E&sex and I covering DorseL Somer5et and Wiltshire. Many of the teatD hold Art History qualifications, some are tsher& and all are sknlled con]municators. Magic Lantern 15 the only educational organisation of its kind in tb¢ United Kingdom an(L we believe, in Europe. Bb sthool workshop is cr055-curricular and interactive. The wothshops open up and enhance all 8r¢as of the National CurricuLum including bistory. lellce, maths, geowdphy, litera. RE and art & design. Children of all ages 8nd abilities sre encouraged to participate through a range of activities such as role-play> fre¢ze-fr8rnes. soundscapes and dialogue. Crucial skills are developed including oracy and listenin& visual lit¢racy. critical tbinkiDg. LX)mmunication and confidence. Every workshop is evaluated by the teacher whose comment ghett is theo returned to Magic Lantern's administr&tor And directoi, Briony Brickell. Thtte evaluation fonns continue to show that Masic Lantern, sessions are of enornlous educational benefit to children and to their teachers. In the academic year 2023-24, the team delivered 328 worksbops which WOA in line with the ThLqtee8 expectations. The number of woTkslLOPS delivered vrns significantly higber than tbe previous academAC year and rellted a Successful recrnitment drive to find new workshop leaders in both existing and new regioaal IatiOns. Higbh'ghts of 2023-24 included Magi¢ Lantenj's fourth virtual CPD workshop ID June. This was again in partuership witb the Association for Art History (AAH) with the aim of equipping priDJary school teachers witb tbe tools to use art history across the SCI01 curriculum. The theme of the workshop was War and Confjirt and used EIi7Abeth Thompson's 1881 paiJJting 'Scotland FoTevwl' as a springboard to exploring the thNn¢. As with previow CPD workshops th¢ f¢dback positiv¢ and w¢ look to TrAt this cvent Dext Supported by the Association for Art History we delivered in person sessions on how to use art bi8tory in the I&ssTOOm to support subject and Gurriculum knowl¢d8¢ for train¢¢ t¢achus at TMthing London: LDBS se and Goldsmiths, Univ¢rsity of London. Magic Lantern have been invited to be part of ao expert panel ConstIllg OD a Dew art and design culliculum that is being written by oak National Academy. This is intended to be a free national resource designed to be used ID classroom s¢tting& Royal Opera House East beld a celebratory event for teachers on 4 July 2023 and asked Magic Lantern to lead CPD sessions for participants. The sessions for teachers from Eybs to secondary received excellent fe&Jback and resulted in Magic Lantern bein8 invited to the Isle of Sheppey to deliver Shakespeare themed woiksbops for childrni in EYFS and KSI. Briony Brickell was interviewed on the Art Engager whicb is a podcast for educators and creatives to engage audiences with art and idw. Briolly Brickell, who had been recruited to lead workshops in DorseL Somerset and Wiltshire, was appointed the Dew administrator and director, comrnencing tbe Tole in September 2023. Briony is a aduate of Thc Courtauld knstitste of Art with a strong background ID gallcry leaTning and knowledge of thg education sector. Matthgw Sanders was rdtified and appointed as a of Magic Lantern in November 2023. Josepha Sann4 the ARTiculation Proj¢rt Manager from the National Gallery, was appointed a trustee on 3 June 2024. The Charity's four patrons are renovmed children'8 author and iUu8trator Jame5 Mayhew, art and culturnl historian and TV prc5entcr Dr Janina Ramirrz, distsDguished art historian Prof¢8sor Will VaugbaD and Ghostbustws and Groundhog Day actOT Bill MUay. FinanelAI revlew Th¢ Clwity had a net deficit for th¢ year of £1,800 (2023". net surplus of £13,184), which is in linc with th¢ exp¢th2tions of th¢ Tn75tee8. MaEi¢ Lantern receive8 no public funding and relies entirely on donations and 8¢hools' fees. The Trustees are very ateful for the donations received during th¢ year of £32,930 (2023: £46.155). At the end of the year the Charity had totsl fimds of £103,958 (2023.. £105.758), of which £71,525 is restricted and £32.433 is for unrestrict¢d purposes. School feey amounted to £4.145 (2023: £750), an avernge of £13.15 per workshop. Over 750/0 of the workshops were given free of ¢hhrg¢ to State maintained schools.
