Presldent Rachel's Year WKI
2024
My Presidential year got off to an excellent start in July with the presentation of our f irst
award of the yeor, a community award for local bus driver David skitt who chose to give his
cheque to Shropshire Air Ambulance. This was closely followed by another award to Wen(
Breakwell for her service to the community in and around Mddeley. Her money was dornted to
Severn Hospice.
We played (m excellent game of bowlin9 at Leek and managed to beat them, meaning that we
were pitched agairnst local rivals Welliryton in the semi- f inals. Unfortunately, we lost this
match but put up a valiant f ight to the end!
We again helped out at the Ironbridge Brass Bond Festival and enioyed some fantastic music
whilst mannin9 the entrance desk. As Presidents priviled9e I was also able to represent the club
at the evening concert which was thoroughly enjoyed, despite the torrential downpour.
The human fruit machine was in action in Madeley in Au9USt (md we even mcinoged to pick up a
new member. Peter Morris. who has already proved to be an excellent kotarian.
Our [now annual] picnic for members and friends was held at The Water Rat with some lawn
games to keep us all amused and we also hod an excellent turn out for the Famity Fun t)og Show
in t)ale End Park, thanks to all the very hard work of Bob Gleave and his team of hardened ring
masters, ticket sellers and do9 wranglers.
September saw the Rotary Conference. held this year on our doorstep at Telford Spa and
Country Club. fm pleased to report that several kotarians joined me in listenin9 to some
inspirational speakers and eryioying the evenin9 meal (md entertainment. On the Sunday Wendy
and Myself showed some of the participants oround fronbridge and 81i$ts Hill. flyin9 the f lag
for our club again, despite more torrentiol rain.
We presented an inf latable Paddle Board to Talking Men Telford. a local group that has been set
up to help men open up about their own mental health stru99les through talk groups, outdoor
activities and sport.
Members were treated to a visit to the Telford Crisis Support offices to see exactly what goes
on and how thiws are run. Simon Lellow gave a very inspiring rundown of how our donations are
used.
Telford Tree of Light switch on took place in November and representatives of all four local
clubs plus our chosen charities, Severn Hospice, Hope House and Telford First Responders
turned out to watch High Sheriff. kotarian Mondy Thorne. press the switch.
Following on f rom this we have had speakers f rom Hope House and Telford First Responders
talk to us about their work and several people had a go at resuscitation and learned how to use a
def ibrillator.
Chris Broad and Sheila Hopkinson got US Gll organiled with the Wrapping Station in the Telford
Centre in the run up to Christmas and we made a really decent amount to contribute a cheque to
Telford Crists Support ond top up our ring-fenced tvnount to continue the monthly food drops
into the New Year. We also had the chance to raise some f unds at Much Wenlock Christmas
Fayre Car Porkin9 thanks to Tony Roden who asked that the proceeds were dorbated to
Shropshire Air Ambulance.
