Chair’s Report for financial year ending 30th June 2025.
Over the last year the charity has continued to carry out its stated aims of : “Advancement of the Buddhist religion by teaching meditation and Buddhism at public classes, training members of the charity and others towards ordination as a Buddhist, providing facilities for worship.”
During the period June 2024 - June 2025 there were no changes to the charity’s trustees who remain as Chandraprabha (Caroline Jane Bond), Amalaketu (Robert Diamond), Saddhavasita (Rakish Rose), Silanatha (Raymond Force) and Sagaradevi (Caroline Barratt).
We continued to run public classes offering different levels of teaching on meditation and Buddhism on Wednesday and Thursday evenings and on Saturday mornings, as well as introductory classes on meditation on Friday lunch times. As always, attendance on Wednesdays and Thursdays can fluctuate, but numbers are generally between 20-30 people on Wednesdays and Saturdays with Thursday numbers tending to be lower. The centre continues to run 2 online meditation sessions each morning.
We held a Sangha Retreat at Vajrasana in November but had to cancel a longer sangha retreat in January as we could not find a team to run it. Saddhavasita and Amalaketu have settled into the roles of women’s and men’s mitra convenors and have worked hard in supporting the Mitra community. During the year, 4 people (2 men and 2 women) became mitras. There were no ordinations of those attending the centre during this year.
At the end of June 2025 we had 4 women and 3 men training to join the Order.
There was still no centre manager in place at the end of June, but we are hoping to employ someone part time to carry out this role. Much of the practical work of running the centre is still carried out by volunteers. We had planned a review of classes starting in 2025, but this has was delayed partly because I had an accident in March 25 which affected my ability to take this new project forward and partly because we were advised it would likely be unfeasible to implement a major reorganisation of classes without a centre team to co-ordinate the changes required.
We continue to have regular meetings of those involved in teaching at the centre at which new ideas are considered. In the autumn of 2025 we are planning to carry out substantial painting and remedial works to the exterior of the building.
