I extend a warm welcome to the 2024 Oxshott Royals Awards Evening to all players, managers, coaches, parents, and friends and relatives. On behalf of the Club’s committee members, I wish you all a most enjoyable time.

Match Days

Over the course of the season 31 teams played for the club in the various competitive and developmental formats. The Club was well represented in local major leagues – the Surrey Primary League (SPL), the Surrey County Women & Girls League (SCWGL), and the Epsom & Ewell Youth League (EEYL). We continue to place significant emphasis on providing very young children with safe footballing opportunities, and 2023/24 was another season of enthusiastic participation in our U5/U6 “Mini-kickers” program.

As ever, there were noteworthy successes at various ability levels for some of our teams. The Club was represented in the highly competitive SPL’s Premier Elite division by the U13 Lions, managed by Glenn Norris. At the time of writing final league positions are not known, but in the EEYL, Mal Rennie’s U12 Predators look likely to finish as runners-up or even winners in Division One. Other teams likely to finish in their respective league divisions’ top two are Matt Aboud’s U12 Mavericks, Nick Jacques’ U15 Lions, and the U12 Lionesses managed by Henri Kamerling. Congratulations to them all for their hard-won achievements.

In cup competitions, the U10 Tigers managed by Tom Derbyshire have made it to the EEYL President’s Cup final; Dave Flanagan’s U10 Lions to the EEYL League Cup semi-final, and Tom Bullock’s U8 Tigers made a quarter-final appearance.

Of course, not every one of our 30+ teams can expect to have a great cup run or top the table season-in, season-out. Sometimes teams have been placed in a challenging division; alternatively, they may be in transition, possibly having lost key players through injury or just the natural cycle of children moving on to other things and other places. Notwithstanding the competitive difficulties that are experienced by most players at some stage in their journey, there are usually several high points to look back on from each season. There are many stories in this booklet from the team reports, but one that stood out for me was the U10 Leopards and Lionesses winning the Mothers’ Day penalty shoot-out 20-19. What a day that must have been!

Space does not permit a summary of every team’s season, but rest assured the Club and its coaching provider, UC, follow developments closely, and we look back at what, overall, appears to have been a very satisfactory season one way or the other. We very much hope that our sentiment is broadly shared by our players, managers, coaches and parents.

Finally, a review of the matchday experience this season would not be complete without a mention of our new kit. I understand that the more modern strip has been warmly received by the players, and my thanks go to, first, Giles Cooper for taking the lead in this initiative, and second, to parents for putting up with the inconvenience that inevitably accompanies a change of this nature.

Training, Development & Facilities

Each week, weather permitting, most of our players enjoy an evening’s training, and the Club’s coaching program appears to have again been delivered smoothly this season despite the organisational challenges that we sometimes face due to multiple venues and weather conditions.

Fortunately, this season was the first time we could offer training on Thursday evenings at Cobham Rugby Club’s 4G facility for the U12 and above age groups. This represents an extension of our use of this facility on top of the existing Saturday morning matchdays for the younger age groups. Together with the all-weather pitch at Notre-Dame school, home to our Girls teams for their training evenings, most of our teams now get to play or train regularly on pitches not subject to unplayability caused by rain. Mini-kickers, who currently play only at Oxshott Village Sports Club, is an exception, but as of the time of writing we are hopeful of securing an alternative for our very young children that will mean they can still play in the event of a wet weekend.

We are grateful to Scott Rimmer and his team at UCL who are implementing the Club’s training syllabus in sync with the FA’s “Future Game” blueprint. The coaching program at Oxshott Royals forms a significant feature of the attractiveness of the club, and we are always looking out for ways we can improve and enhance the training & development experience.

One aspect of the training experience we pay particular attention to is quality assurance and the provision of ongoing mentoring and guided learning to parent managers and coaches. As mentioned in my last year’s report, the Club in partnership with UCL planned to hire an FA Coach educator to support the development of all players and managers. I am pleased to announce that Jez Ingram joined UCL during the season, and we hope to build on the previous work by Scott’s team in forthcoming years. Welcome, Jez.

The Club continues to invest time and energy into developing opportunities for the girls’ football pathway, and I am pleased to report that a record five teams played for the Club this season. The

Club continues to work closely with local schools in the community to help provide more enriched opportunities for girls. This season we appointed a Girls Co-ordinator at UCL, Ewan Jones, whom I also extend a welcome to. This role focuses on both retention and recruitment, with one of the objectives being the creation of a new girls’ team each season.

Our tenure at Cobham Recreation Ground completed its third year. The teething problems we experienced during our first two years seemed to have settled down. Notably, we have been successful in transitioning most of the 9-a-side matches from Ockham to Cobham Rec. This has been especially important for the players’ matchday experience since the pitches at Ockham, while making for a wonderful venue in good weather, soak up the rain mercilessly and are seemingly reluctant to let it drain away. Cobham Rec, in contrast, copes with rain very well for a grass pitch.

The Club continues to aspire to make Cobham Rec a more welcoming experience for parents and supporters: anyone wishing to volunteer for the provision of refreshments at the Pavilion, if only for their own team’s matches, will be warmly received!

Behind the Scenes

The Club benefits from the efforts and contribution from all its members, especially its managers, the members of the Management Committee, and the coaches in the employ of UC. Parents, too, play their part, whether it be drop-off and pick-up duties, spectating on cold wet and windy days, helping out on Presentation Day or erecting goals and goal nets. I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has helped, in whatever capacity.

This season, managers Giles Cooper, Mal Rennie, Matt Aboud, Glenn Norris and Tom Bullock joined the Club’s committee, and Dave Cullen rejoined to share the vice-chair role with Giles. A big thank you to all for your efforts this season, and I look forward to seeing the Committee continuing to grow into its next phase.

This season I would again like to make a special mention of the outstanding contribution Liz Richardson, in her capacity as Club Secretary, has made to the Club. Thank you, Liz, for your commitment, conscientiousness, and your quality of work.

It was another year of hard work for our coaching providers under the supervision of Scott Rimmer, our Head Coach. I thank Scott also for his efforts this year and look forward to another year of his services.

Finally, on the committee front, I would like to express my thanks to Administrative Assistant, Karen Alder, for her good work and efforts on the Club’s behalf in what is her first season with us.

Final Score

While competitive success is always worth striving for, and should be vigorously applauded when it is achieved, it is important to remember the importance of simply participating. What is success at Oxshott Royals? Players looking forward to the next match regardless of the last one’s scoreline, spending time being active with their friends, being inclusive and generous towards teammates, winning well but sporting in defeat, learning in training and trying to improve … these are things that are valued and also count as success at Oxshott Royals.
