Trustees’ Report for the period ended 31 March 2021
The Trustees have pleasure in presenting their Annual Report and Financial Statements for the period ended 31 March 2021.
Reference and administrative details
Hedgehog Helpline (“the Charity”) is a charitable Trust registered and in Wales.
The Charity is registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales under registration number: 1046156.
The registered address of the Charity is The Hollies, Hyde Place, Llanhellith, Abertillery, NP13 2RT
Statement on public benefit
The objectives and activities, achievement and performance sections of this report clearly set out the activities which the charity undertakes for public benefit. The Trustees confirm that they have complied with the duty of the Charities Act 2006.
Objectives and activities
The objectives of the Charity as defined are:

1) The relief of suffering and distress of hedgehogs and other animals in need of care and attention by the provision of a rescue and rehabilitation service for abandoned, neglected or injured hedgehogs.

2) To advance public education in the study of hedgehogs and in the care, methods of treatment, nursing, conservation and habitat.
To achieve the charities objectives; the charity focuses activities on the rescue and rehabilitation of hedgehogs in need. In addition, undertaking educational activities and public awareness, including and not limited to social media coverage; school visits and talks to various groups. Engagement with national and local media. During the period of 202/21 physical visits were stopped due to the Coronavirus pandemic; however; we undertook virtual sessions although in limited numbers.

Management
The charity is managed day to day by the Management committee consisting of Trustees, Secretary and administrative volunteers.
All positions within the charity are on a voluntary basis and no expenses are paid.
The charity during 2020/21 had approximately 65 volunteers.
The charity is supported by our Vet and Chair and the veterinary practise, for which the charity is grateful for their continued support.
Achievements and performance
The coronavirus pandemic impacted on the charity’s operations for 7 weeks during 2020; where we were forced to close. Once permission was sought from Wales Government and all Local Authorities our charity cover; we were able to reopen.
The charity during the year worked with local authorities to increase awareness; namely Blaenau Gwent; Caerphilly County Borough Council; Rhondda Cynon Taff and Bridgend County Borough Council. Work is continuing with each as well as other authorities within South East Wales.
The charity admitted over 1300 hedgehogs during the year despite not operating for 7 weeks.
The charity carry out compulsory training yearly; and regular training by our Vet; all training is recorded and held on a main database as well as individual training records.
All admissions records are recorded, both manually and electronically, including a rigid and robust medication trial. Unannounced audit checks are carried out on volunteer carers.
Financial
The charities income for the year was £26,033.81 which mainly derived from donations. We received £3,000 in grants and £2,890 from making and selling nest boxes.
Our expenditure is lower than normal as we have been unable to purchase equipment as planned; our order was cancelled by our supplier. We did purchase some additional microscopes to continue progression our carers throughout the charity.
We are grateful to our vets practise who continue to supply our medication at cost price and as a registered charity we benefit from the VAT free purchases.
The charity operates on a cash basis and ensure we maintain a reserve to cover 2 years medication of £20,000.
The charity own no property.

The law applicable to charities in England & Wales requires Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the position of the charity.
In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to:

Select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently

Observe the methods and principles in the charities SORP

State where applicable UK accounting standards have been followed; subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements.

Prepare the financial statements
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that are sufficient to show and explain the transactions disclosing with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial p0osition and ensure that the financial statements comply with charities Act 2011, the charity accounts and reports regulations 2009 and provisions of the Trust deed. The trustees are also responsible for the prevention and detection of fraud and all other irregularities.
In so far as the Trustees as aware:

There is no relevant information of which the charities independent examiner is unaware and
-
The Trustees have taken all steps that they ought to have taken to make themselves aware of any relevant information and to establish that the independent examiner is aware of that information.

Independent Examiners Report to the Trustees for the year ended 30 June 2021
I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity for the period ended 31 March 2021 which are set out on Page 8
Respective and responsibilities of the trustees and examiner
As the charities trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in the accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the act”)
I report in respect of my examination of the Trusts accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed the applicable directions given by the charities commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiners statement
I have completed my examination; I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in any material respect:

The accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
-
The records did not accord with the accounting records or
-
The accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities accounts and reports Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of the independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in the report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
