Summary of the purposes Para 1.17 The object of the Charity is the
of the charity as set out in advancement of religion in accordance
its governing document with the usages and practices of Unitarian
and Free Christian Churches and to further
other charitable purposes that the
Trustees may from time to time
determine. With freedom, reason and
tolerance as our guiding principles,
Leicester Unitarians share an enquiring
outlook into non-dogmatic, liberal religion
and seek to affirm an open-ended faith in
life, in humanity and in God. Further
information is available on our website:

importance. The minister or deputy
provides pastoral support to the
congregation and liaises with other
congregations in the East Midlands and
with national organisations involved in
Unitarian activity. The elected trustees
manage the chapel and organize activities
for the congregation. Our carefully
maintained meeting rooms and garden
are a valuable resource for groups wishing
to hire them. In the chapel we offer the
facility for weddings (including for same
sex couples), naming ceremonies and
funerals. Our next door ‘old school
building’, properly named Charles Berry
House, is rented to the NHS for use as a
Health Centre for the homeless, for
asylum seekers and for those with alcohol
or drug dependency.

Accepted Accounting Practice). The law
applicable to charities in England and
Wales is the Charities Act 2011, Charity
(Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008
and the provisions of the Charity's
Constitution require the Trustees to
prepare financial statements for each
financial year which give a true and fair
view of the state of affairs of the charity
and of the incoming resources and
application of resources of the Charity for
that period. In preparing these financial
statements, the Trustees are required to:
• select suitable accounting policies and
then apply them consistently;
• observe the methods and principles in
the Charities SORP;
• make judgements and estimates that
are reasonable and prudent;
• state whether applicable accounting
standards and statements of
recommended practice have been
followed, subject to any departures
disclosed and explained in the financial
statements; and
• prepare the financial statements on a
going concern basis unless it is
inappropriate to presume that the Charity
will continue in operation.
The Trustees are responsible for keeping
proper accounting records which disclose
with reasonable accuracy at any time the
financial position of the Charity and
enable them to ensure that the financial
statements comply with the Charities Act
2011, the Charity (Accounts and Reports)
Regulations 2008 and the provision of the
Charity's Constitution. They are also
responsible for safeguarding the assets of
the Charity and hence for taking
reasonable steps for the prevention and
detection of fraud and other
irregularities..

worship with social distancing, records of
attendance for contact tracing, and
without singing.
Phase 1 of the repair works commenced
and in spring we were informed of the
award of a grant from National Heritage
Lottery which, in addition to generous co-
funding from other charitable bodies
including East Midlands Unitarians,
enabled us to proceed with all phases of
the repair. Members of the congregation
helped by arranging concerts and
sponsored walks. We hit a major problem
half way through the works when a beam
was discovered to be badly affected by
wet rot but fortunately a number of our
donors supplied top up funding and metal
plating of the beam and repair of the
ceiling was completed. Concurrently the
Grade II listed external retaining
boundary wall was fully repaired with the
help of a grant from Historic England, and
the internal memorial plaques restored
following a grant from the Pilgrim Trust.
The chapel’s heritage was promoted via a
Heritage Outreach programme with talks,
lectures and visits. A highlight was the
visit of 60 students from Loughborough
University when a presentation was given
by our chairman, our architect and our
structural engineer.
These repairs enable the chapel to
continue as a religious asset, as a
heritage asset and as a community
facility.
The administration of our next door asset

addressed by a change of agent in 2020 and this led to an improvement in the speed of quarterly payments, which had long been a point of contention. Later in the year we employed a Congregational Support Lead to help with the development and promotion of the activities of the chapel. In November we held a consultation with the congregation to discover their priorities and wishes for the future. This was facilitated by a member of the congregation and the interesting results were subsequently disseminated.

Review of the charity’s Para 1.21 The financial position is stable as

end of the period depressed in the Covid environment (a
situation noted by many equivalent
organisations) we were supported by a
grant from Leicester City Council to
compensate for reduction in lettings
income of £5000 and by the generous
continued support of our congregation.
We have succeeded in reducing the
salarial component of our expenditure.
The accounts were presented to the
congregation at the AGM on 25/9/22.

reserves position and aim to correct when
possible. In late 2021 our longstanding
and much respected Minister announced
his retirement from March 2022 and
although the interregnum prior to
appointment of a new minister is not
wished for, some consolidation of
reserves will be possible.
