Chairman’s Report
I thought last year was a strange year but this year ,since the last AGM, has been littered with restrictions and lockdowns again. We had just started Kids Karate, Craft Club and Chair Exercise was poised to begin the next day when we were stopped in our tracks once again. That said, if it kept us all free from Covid it was worth the disruption.
The Trustees took great care with Covid rules and precautions before we slowly dipped a toe in the water again in mid May with Kids Karate and the Trustees took their time to be ultra safe in opening our Community Coffee Shop. On our first opening day it was lovely to see so many villagers watching Dee Littleford give a speech and cut the ribbon. Well over 80 people came through the doors that morning. This Coffee Shop could not operate without the willing band of volunteers and bakers we have. Each one says how much they enjoy helping out too, so it is not forced labour!! The reality though is that without this group of volunteers we could not run Coffee Shop and we continue to try and encourage new volunteers. Coffee shop and Craft Club are now back to normal, although we are still encouraging mask wearing when moving about, providing hand sanitiser and good ventilation just so that we are doing the best we can. It is, of course , a personal choice as to mask wearing however all Coffee Shop volunteers do wear masks and carry out a LFT before service each week , which we hope gives villagers confidence to come.
Craft Club very kindly took up the challenge of repainting and refixing our historical photographs and they look very smart in the meeting room. Craft Club have also exhibited some of their work on the walls in the village hall and will, from time to time, show us fresh work the club has done; we are extremely grateful for all Kate Smith and her merry band have done. The hall now looks a much softer, more comfortable space . Craft Club have restarted their monthly workshops and most are fully booked; these range from artwork to lino cutting to Christmas Box decoupage.
Pat Green is taking a steady stream of booking for private parties and we have a wedding booked in April. The village hall is catering for the Allotment Club dinner in November so it seems everyone is really appreciating how nice the village hall now is. The regular meetings are also taking place again and Nicky Busby has a bible study group running on a Tuesday night . Chris Muspratt has booked the first of her RNLI whist drives in October, so life really is getting back on track.
The Trustees wanted to be very sure that at each stage of opening up there were no Covid problems and at the next Trustees ordinary meeting in 2 weeks time we shall be discussing an ongoing events programme in conjunction with some ex-Committee Members, who continue to be active with Events.
During the last few months the Trustees have said goodbye to 2 Trustees and welcomed 1 new Trustee. Linda Fletcher was appointed 3 years ago and gladly took on the office of Secretary. Her organisational skills certainly helped me enormously as Chairman and her calm sensibleness is greatly missed but she has family commitments that no longer should take second place to her formal duties. She continues as a “ friend of the village hall” ongoing we hope being
part of events and being a stalwart member of the coffee shop team. Thank you Linda.
Sue Wadham has been the Trustee elected by the Millennium Green Trust for over 7 years and she has played a huge part in the fundraising and build programme; it has been a pleasure to work alongside her and she is greatly missed. That said, she too is continuing with Coffee shop and events so we all have her tasty food to look forward to. Sue has been replaced by Liz Ellis as the User Representative of The Millennium Green Trust and the Trustees are delighted and look forward to working with her in the future.
Without the continued support of the Trustees, The friends of the village hall , and I include all of the coffee shop volunteers here, village halls would just fade away into just a “room to hire”. At a coffee shop recently it was lovely to hear a visitor comment how vibrant the villagehall so I can’t thank all of these people enough for their varied contributions.
I would like to thank the Parish Council for their continued financial support year on year. In addition during this last year, our normal income was replaced by Covid grants from LDC which enabled us , with financial confidence, to leave the heating on each day for a few hours and properly dry out the building and keep damp at bay as it was not being used. Mercia also gave a grant for £3000 which ¾ funded the side paving and some kitchen equipment so we feel very lucky to have achieved so much in such difficult times.
The Constitution of the Charity has been amended by way of an Addendum approved on 22 June 2021 to the Variation of Trust Deed dated 02 June 2014 such that the Trust now allows virtual meetings and has allowed the opening of an Internet Bank Account, both resolutions which will ensure better efficiency and administration of the Trust.
None of us know whether we shall have any more repercussions from Covid but The Trustees now feel they are financially secure and are in a good state to move forward and run the village hall for the benefit of the Community .
