CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2021
The chairman presents his slatement for the year.
The past financial year 202012021 has been one of continued consolidation, growih and investment. Whilst the
year has been dominated by the profound impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, we were determined not lo let it
overshadow the oulslanding successes of the past year. The team have risen to the challenges of remote
working, embraced new lechnologies, shown flexibility and been quick to respond lo a changed wodd.
Technology enabled us lo roll out a whole range of virtual experiences from launching demonslralion farms.
running LEAF Online Farm Sunday to our fi'rst virtual Annual Conference on Dealing with the Climate
Emergency. Furthemiore, we have run fortnightly surgeries on lopical issues with some loplevel speakers. It is
significant ihat the support and reach of these events has been unprecedented.
Added lo this, all LEAF'S activities have lo be viewed against the changing polilical landscape which the farming
sector is facing outside the EU. New trading relationships and changes in support payments wth the
introduction of the new Environmental Land Management scheme in England and the Climate Change plan in
Scolland. wrth their focus on 'public money for public goods. will present both challenges and significant
opportunities for LEAF and our members. We are dete￿nIned lo capilalize on this.
This year saw the launch of our nev4 10-year slralegy12021-20311 representing a significanl and IransfoTmalive
mcmenl for the organisalion. With an updaled vision and mission, well defined ambitions, set across eight cross
culling commilmenls. il builds on our core objectives and capabilities.
We have expanded our capability to engage more with farmers. the industry and government through our
technical and visionary approaches. Our work in the field of educalion and public engagement has also been
remarkable and provides a solid loundalion on which we are continually building. In response lo the Coronavirus
pandemic. our team of Regional Education Consullanls delivered imaginalive and virtual learning programmes
with schools across the UK, and we quickly adapted many of our Countryside Classroom resources lor home
schooling. As il was not possible to host live fami events, we ran two online events in June and September.
involving live virtual farm tours and a programme of online talks.
We were also delighted lo host our first
inlemalional live virtual fam tours in Ghana and Spain.
Similarly, Famier Time played a hugely significant role in enabling young people to speak to farmers directly and
experience farming in a safe way. Also. in response lo the pressures of lockdown. our LEAF Education team
priorilised health and wellbeing and adapted existing programmes and resources lo incorporate creative. mindful
and sensory activities lo help children relax and connect with famiing and nature. We wll be building on this in
the year ahead.
2021 marks the 30th anniversary of LEAF. a special moment for the charity. The next chapter is both exciting
and inspiring. We are determined lo find new ways of delivering produclivily and prosperity for our farmers and
members through the development and promotion of Climate Positive. inlegraled and regenerative farming as
well as engaging with young people and society in a purFoseful and meaningful manner.
As the industry continues lo resFond lo the pandemic, nawgate a post-Brexit world, fight for fair and equitsble
trade arrangements, LEAF will continue lo maintsin and build leadefship in Solut￿ driven approaches.
Our work and our voice will be more important than ever.

Financial assets and liabilities Ihal are measured al cost and amortised cosl are assessed al the end
of each reporting period lor objective evidence of impaimienl. If objective evidence ol impaimient is
found, an impairment loss is recognised in the Slalemenl of Financial Aclivilies.
Financial assets and liabilitEs that are measured ai fair value are delemined using active markel
rale.
CRITICAL ACCOUNTING ESTIMATES AND AREAS OF JUDGEMENT
Eslimales and judgements are conlinually evaluated and are based on historical experience and other
factors. includiry expeclalions of future events that are telieved to be reasonable under the
circumstances.
Critical accounting estimates and assumptions..
The Charity makes eslimales and assumptions concerning the future. The resulting accounting eslimales
and assumplions will. by definition, seldom equal the relaled actual results. The eslimales and
assumptions that have a significant risk of causing a material adjuslmenl to the carrying amounts of
assets and liabilities within the next financial year are discussed below.
Critical areas of judg8ment'.
The key area of judgement applied when preparing th8 finan￿al statements is around the recognition of
income and expenditure relating lo Open Farm Sunday. All income and expenditure relating to Ihe Open
Farm Sunday event held in 2021 is fecognised in these financial slalemenls. As the event is nationwide
and exlremely unlikely lo be cancelled li.e. il would require a significant force majeure such as extreme
wealher for the event lo be cancelled) income and expenditure is non-refundable. Furthemiore. sponsors
immediately reap the benelits of their sponsorship throughout the promotion of the event. All income and
expenditure is therefore deemed lo occur in the period covered by these financial statements and has
n fecognised accordingly.
