Chairperson's Report 2020/21 Kiddiewinks Preschool by Kirsty Sparks 

A small and very dedicated committee run Kiddiewinks Preschool along with the staff . As Kiddiewinks is a charity, the committee is vital in order for the preschool to remain open. 

This year has been a very challenging time for the whole world, and unlike anything most of us have ever experienced, due to the Covid 19 pandemic. 

The preschool have had to deal with closure, then ever-changing rules and restrictions that meant adapting the way they operated. 

Due to restrictions the committee have not been able to meet in person but have been kept informed and able to give opinions and advice. Very little has been open to discussion due to the strict operating rules laid down by the government and we thank the manager , Heather Sparks, for changing the preschool operation and dealing with restricted children numbers, no visitors including parents, only washable toys, constant cleaning, no protection from Covid, the ever-changing covid rules and yet helping to keep morale going. The preschool coped admirably and did not have a single case of covid or had to close. One event, where two members of staff had to isolate, the remaining two staff managed to keep the preschool operating, with the great help of the parents who agreed to drop one day that week so that we kept in ratio and could remain open. 

In a very difficult and exhausting year the committee thank the staff for managing to keep going in the face of danger and for giving the children as near to normal life as they were allowed. They have had to go without their school trip, public sports day, nativity, leavers party and seeing the parents inside but have made the most of what they were able to do. 

The committee is always in need of new parents and being on a committee is often looked favourably upon by future employers if you are looking to get back into work. If you would like to join the committee, who meet on a weekday evening for less than an hour, a few times a year, please talk to a member of staff.

This year has seen the Covid pandemic and a lockdown and has been a big struggle financially. 

We were forced to close for half a term which meant that our normal private fees would not be paid and reduced capacity for the rest of the year severely restricted any money coming in. New children couldn't start and fears of covid kept many families at home. 

Our government grants were still paid to us but based on our quietest term so the figures were low and estimated for the rest of the year. This meant, even when we saw an increase in children attending, we were not paid any extra. 

We were only allowed to claim furlough wages money based on the amount of private fees we receive so that meant we could only claim a very small percentage back as opposed to the 80% other businesses received. 

Due to the high amount of cleaning we had to carry out, our cleaning costs rocketed six fold which is a lot of extra money to find when our income has been reduced. 

We were unfortunately unable to carry out any fundraising as our usual interactions with the parents and events, such as our school trip, were not allowed. 

The minimum wage still rose however, which then meant that all wages had to be raised in line with this. We value everything the staff do, and wish we could pay them much more, but being a charity, we are doing all we can to remain viable and keep costs down. The staff regularly pay for snack out of their own pockets and drop days to help keep costs down whenweare ~* struggling. It is these sacrifices that have allowed the preschool to remain open since 1969 under various names , and as Kiddiewinks since 2000. 

Our rent remained the same, which we were very thankful to the church for, and we continued to help with the cleaning and were lucky to have sole use of the building for a long time which meant we didnt have to pack away each day. 

We applied for a small covid grant from the local council which was approved at the end of the year but not yet received. We will actively look for other grants to cover the shortfall next year.

Kiddiewinks Preschool 

## Staff report 2020 by Heather Sparks 

Covid-19 global Pandemic- This year has been like no other and has given us many obstacles to overcome but we have worked well as a team and fully support each other. 

Kiddiewinks started the year with five regular and loyal members of staff. Lisa, the deputy, Helen senco, Angela, Donna and myself Heather. With the increasing talk of Covid and fear taking over, Donna, who is vunerable, felt unable to come to work and stayed home. Handwashing on arrival was introduced and as other institutions were closed, we remained open. Then the national lockdown on 23" March saw us close, with contact being given to children through technology and manual handouts delivered during allowed walks. Money was tight as we were given funding based on an estimate and were only allowed to claim furlough money equivalent to private fees. When we were instructed to reopen in June it was with a long list of rules that required us to restructure the routine, write risk assessments and covid policies, remove many toys, space out activities and seating, restrict the number of children and clean everything frequently throughout the day. Many, including Donna, were scared to return and were supported in other ways. We opened with four members of staff and could accommodate all the children that wanted to attend. Despite having to be dropped outside, and some resources being removed, we tried to make the sessions as fun as possible, incorporating learning along with boasting their mental wellbeing at such a strange time. As the church was not being used we benefitted from not having to pack everything away each day, a massive bonus. The pandemic meant that we 



were not able to have our summer trip and the parents were not allowed in for the normal sports day and leavers ceremony. We decided to hold a sports day just for the children and, as we couldn't let the children leave for school without a proper goodbye, we had an open-air leavers do with distanced parents. It was strange not being able to hug the emotional parents but we always ensured our promise of care to the children was never restricted and they received all the cuddles and warmth they needed to ensure they were happy and secure. 

In September, all the remaining children were entitled to return and we had a number of new children. We were unsure how they would cope as they were unable to come in and visit and weren't allowed to be brought in by their parents. However, they were brilliant and came in amazingly. Gradually more children returned and numbers rose. Donna felt unable to work and decided to hand in her notice. We were sad to lose her but understood her reasons. 

After half-term two staff members had to isolate and in order for us to remain open, the parents opted to drop one day so that we could operate on reduced pupils and two members of staff. It was great to see everyone pulling together to ensure we kept going. 

Despite all the restrictions and cancellation of many of the events we would normally do, we continued to give the children a complete and extensive education, concentrating on improving the skills each needed working on, all within a loving, play-based environment. 

We missed out on having three work experience pupils during the summer because of the restrictions but were able to welcome a student, Jess, in the autumn term. She has been a great hit with the children and is a natural around them. Once again the country went into lockdown but we were told to 



remain open even though the schools closed. This put added fear and pressure on staff and parents but we carried on regardless. The children missed out on their usual nativity and christmas party but we improvised, even having Father Christmas on facetimel. 

So much of this year has been different and scary but I am so proud of the staff for their dedication to their profession and for the parents for trusting us to keep their children safe. The children have been given all they need to continue learning and growing and we hope that. we have worked hard enough to ensure that the crazy year has not impacted on their wellbeing or education. We are proud that we have not had a single case or closure because of covid and hope this remains the case. 

We would also like to thank the amazing dedication of the committee for all their work. Without a committee we would not be able to stay open and we encourage any parents, who might be interested, to join the committee and help in some way. 

As the pandemic continues into 2021, we hope that eventually life will become more normal, restrictions can be lifted and that we can welcome parents back into the setting to ensure a closer relationship and more events can start to take place.
