District Commissioner Report
I joined Southend Estuary District in November 2021 just as scouting moved from Zoom calls to face-toface meetings.
My first few Months of starting has been meeting new people and understanding how Estuary works.

One of the first things I did was talk to everyone I could in the District. From those discussions we found 5 priorities:
-
Training and Scout knowledge
-
Recruitment for young people and adults
-
Permits for Activities
-
Young Leaders
-
Network (18 to 25 year olds)
This year’s Renewal of Promise will be remembered for the high winds that prevented us from having the blow up activities (Bouncy Castles) that everyone was looking forward too. It was however great to see so many Scouts of all ages enjoying themselves.
The next year my focus will be on shaping the District and Group teams to ensure that young people get a great opportunity through Scouting. This will mean a focus on Activities and expanding sharing Scout knowledge to help everyone with their Scout experience.

District Beavers Report
All colonies are now back meeting face to face following the lockdowns for Covid.
In December we held our first district activity with our annual Beaver carol concert, this was well attended and enjoyed by all who came along. It was a strange event with lots of extra precautions in place and due to rows missed between each colony resulted in less space for parents, but we managed to fit everyone in.
In April we attended the Renewal of Promise at Garons, did not go as planned but a massive thank you for all the Beaver leaders for helping provide craft for the youngsters to do.
In July we held our annual sports night, this is always a popular event which

parents are welcome to stay and watch, we had our usual mix of races, but this year included a warmup with Sara and a tug of war at the end.
Most colonies have taken part in a sleepover, and everyone has been working hard on
badges. Coming up we have a county fun day at Skreens park this Saturday and Art Attack and leaders workshop coming up soon.
Thank you to all the leaders for all your hard work.

District Cubs Report
We currently have 11 active cub packs within Southend Estuary.
I took on the role around 8 months ago and I am so happy and grateful for the amount of support I have been shown from the Cub Leaders of the District.
We have managed to run a successful athletics evening in which 125 cubs earned their athletics badge.
I have also had the pleasure of welcoming and investing a new cub leader at 3rd Shoeburyness and have witnessed the group grow from strength to strength with an expanded Leadership team.
Also, authorising 6 silver awards and look forward to being able to authorise many more.
I will be meeting with the cub leaders to get a plan into place in regards to other events

such as badge weekends, swimming gala’s and hopefully many more district events.
I would like on a personal note to say a massive thank you to all the leaders for their initial support and guidance as I learn more about the role.
A special thank you goes out to Lorna, Sue, Lorraine and Amber who have been amazing in helping me settle into the role.
Yours in Scouting,

District Scout Section Report
It was a fantastic feeling to eventually bring Scouting back to normal after a very hard 2 years. District Scouting started with our indoor badge weekend where we offered 7 badge choices and we had a record attendance of 105 Scouts, this was made up from 11 troops. The weekend went very well but was a lot of work and we learnt a lesson to cap the amount of Scouts in the future.
Our second district event was the outdoor badge weekend where again we offered 7 badge choices which were different from the indoor badge weekend. We had 82 Scouts attend from 10 troops. It was nice to have our District Commissioner join us for the weekend to see for himself the fun the Scouts have and the work that the badge leaders put into organising their badges. Our third event was camping competition, this year although it was still a competition it was based
around teaching camping skills as a lot of the Scouts either hadn’t camped before or hadn’t

camped where they did everything for themselves. Well done to Great Wakering Scout troop for winning the
competition with 386 points, second was 10th Southend with 384 points and third was 5th Southchurch with 383 points. The competition was the closest I have ever seen and the positioning literally came down to the final uniform marking. Well done to 3rd Southchurch on winning the Oasis Masterchef trophy with 150 points, 2nd was 10th Southend with 149 points and 3 rd was Great Wakering with 148 points. Thank you to Mark Chapman, Explorers and helpers for hosting the Super
Troop competition, the Scouts really do enjoy taking part and having a relaxing time away from their pitches. Well done to 2nd Prittlewell for winning this. I was so proud at the end of this weekend as for the first time I experienced not one Scout lost a single conduct point, this means all the Scouts were on their best behaviour, no arguments and courteous to all leaders. I hope you are as proud of your Scouts as I was. Unfortunately this camp wasn’t as well attended as usual and we only had 40Scouts attend, but it was still a great weekend and enjoyed by all. I would like to say a special thankyou at this stage to Colin, Sean, Lyndsey and Adrian who as a team brought the rules and marking procedures up to date and ensured the weekend worked well.
I would like to thank all the leaders and young leaders for their help with these three events, without you it wouldn’t be possible and the Scouts would miss out, it is lovely seeing the Scouts all mixing with Scouts from other troops.
Census figures looked good for the Scout section this year. Dates for next year, Indoor badge is still in discussion Outdoor Badge is at Thriftwood May 12 th to 14 th Camping Competition is at Belchamps 16 th to 18 th JuneI have been notified that a lot of groups have been camping this year, I know we held a summercamp and it was so nice to be back.
I would like to thank all the Scout leaders, assistant leaders and young leaders for the amazing job you all do, it certainly makes my job easier.
Please remember if you need any help I am only a phone call or email away.

AGM Explorer Report – 2021/22 – Sept 2022
Southend Estuary Explorer Scout Report
2021-22 was another amazingly successful, enjoyable, and adventurous year with strengthening numbers. When covid restrictions permitted, all units regrouped with strong attendance at Ice skating and a magnificent firework display to celebrate the reopening of Network. Mariners also restarted in summer 2021 with an enthusiastic bunch of 9 young people who continue to grow from strength to strength. All units improved their links with scout troops but there is still more to do.
Units, either individually or combined, enjoyed crazy golf, Halloween film in the woods, fire cooking, sleeping in hammocks, sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, land yachting, hikes, stargazing and navigation, biking, scavenger hunts, scuba diving and a canoeing trip on River Chelmer. Nore, Columbus and Patriot successfully provided opportunities for many explorers to complete their bronze or silver DoE award hike on South Downs. Several have completed their Silvers DoE’s this year. Nore, with Columbus, experienced sailing two Oyster 49 Offshore sailing yachts on the river Orwell, everyone enjoyed helming and working the sails. Sailing was mixed with hilariously entertaining singing ‘on the crest of a wave’ which concluded with high velocity water cannon flight. Columbus progressed with Chef and Air Activities Badges.
Patriots, successfully completed the national London Monopoly run and joined the British Pedal Car Championship Round and plan to attend the Jailbreak event.
The Young Leader Unit delivered Module A and a successful training day. We ran a First Aid course and are planning another training day and first aid later in the year.
All units camped more than once, some with their feeders, and all units participated in a summer trip. Columbus represented the district at Essex Explorers 20th birthday camp winning the most topical Sedan Chair with their recycling theme
wheelie bin, full of recycled objects, carried by dustmen in well-dressed Hi-Vis Jackets.
One of the year’s camping highlights was SEMAC in the Peak District staying at Gradback bunkhouse for an action packed long weekend of caving, gorge walking, climbing, hiking, and evening campfires. The district’s grand Summer Venture SV22 at the Gower, South Wales was attended by 34 keen explorers and leaders, who totally immersed themselves into a week of amazing activities. These included refreshing 6am sunrise swims, climbing,

coasteering (some jumped from heights of greater than 10m
into the sea), paddleboarding, kayaking, coastal hiking around Worms Head, building water rockets all interspersed with daily volleyball challenges.
Patriots ran their summer trip along with 5000 fellow scouts at the Kent International Jamboree camp – under the theme celebrating Our Celestial World! An enjoyable and memorable time was enjoyed by all.
Lloyd and Ethan were chosen to join the International Finland
Jamboree, their highlights included
“Explorer rave, bonding with other scouts in Estonia and the interesting Soviet tour to
experience what life was like behind the iron curtain. Our trip to Tivoli Gardens Theme Park was thrilling and exciting” said Lloyd
Network reopened with several explorers joining to continue their scouting.
The Southend Gang Show was well supported with cast members from several units. Nore’s Oliver and Sammie were selected to perform in the Best of Gang Show performance at The London Apollo, celebrating 90 years of UK Gang Shows. A truly magnificent achievement.
Our Minibus has served us well, (more than one million passenger miles) but will need replacing so we have commenced a replacement fund.
Next year, several members from Nore and Patriot will be attending International World Jamborees in Korea and North America. Emma and John will be part of the leadership team attending the Jersey International Jamboree.
This year explorers had opportunities to join an incredible list of activities each encouraged by a team of very dedicated leaders, assistants, and supporters for which we are all extremely appreciative and thankful. With such a great leadership team, I am confident that 2022/3 will be equally adventurous.
