MINUTES

The minutes of the previous Annual General Meeting held on 23rd September 2021 has been circulated in the Notice of Meeting and were held to be a true and correct record of proceedings. John Moorcroft proposed, Anne Tipple seconded. All were in favour.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT

2021 saw the country begin to emerge from the restrictions which had been brought in following the Covid-19 pandemic. For the Society, the uncertainty surrounding the lifting of restrictions coupled with the time required to organise a summer event meant that no Society summer event was held this year.

The Society was however not idle and introduced a Christmas Sparkle event held at the end of November in the Agriculture Business Centre and the hard area immediately around it, which was a great success.

This event was free to visit and highlighted local producers and local products. The ABC concourse was busy with visitors all day and in addition the Society used the conference room at the ABC to provide activities for children.

Santa also made an appearance with some of his reindeer and a snowy day added to the overall effect – however the journey home for many drivers took longer than expected because of the weather. Oh that we could all have had reindeer and sleighs and whizzed away through the skies!

A second Christmas Sparkle will be held in November 2022 and it is hoped that this will become an annual event.

As Covid restrictions continued to ease we were again able to be host to other events on the showground and after the difficulties of 2020 it was pleasing to see the showground being used once more.

Once again during the summer months travellers appeared on the showground and car parks with the result that we had one event cancelled with loss of

revenue to the Society. Once again when the travellers eventually left there was mess to be cleared up.

Derbyshire Dales District Council were advised none of this was acceptable to the Society, who had to face the loss in revenue and this after the Society had invested money to increase security at the showground and car park. It remains an ongoing concern that Derbyshire Dales have not yet been able to allocate land within the Derbyshire Dales District for a permanent traveller site.

On a more positive note, we were able to see three bird boxes placed on the Society’s land and are grateful for the support we received from Bakewell Rotary Club and a local resident. We hope that during the winter/spring of 2021/22, we will see tree planting and further infill hedge planting on the Society’s land.

With the assistance of the Haddon estate river bailiff we are also aiming to safeguard a wildlife strip on the bank of the River Wye. This news, and other news of the Society, is now sent out to Society members via quarterly newsletter.

Once again the Society was able to offer grants for training in connection with the agriculture/horticulture/arboriculture industries with four new applicants and further grants paid to those whose courses were delayed because of covid restrictions.

At the Society’s AGM this year we elected Steve Flewitt as our President for the forthcoming year and we hope very much that he will be able to enjoy a summer event which we plan to hold in 2022. Rev. Tony Kaunhoven (Vicar of Bakewell) was confirmed as President elect.

The Society also welcomed as Directors Paul Clayton, who has for many years been closely involved with the Dog Show, and John Moorcroft who is a sheep farmer from the north of the county.

Finally I am delighted to report that Bridget Hope is now settled in as our Society Manager and she has been able to call on ALD Media, who have improved the Society’s social media format, and Pete Lownds who has assisted the Society with work improving the showground.

I should perhaps also mention our local farmer whose sheep who do an excellent job in keeping the grass clipped during much of the year.

Thank you all. We look forward to the future with optimism.

Ian Else

On the proposal of Trish Winterbottom and seconded by John Moorcroft, the report was received.

FINANCE REPORT

The finance report and accounts were circulated in the Notice of Meeting booklet. Becky Parkinson from Hadfields presented the accounts and confirmed that they were all in accordance and are a true and accurate report with no areas for concern. She was able to report that a small surplus was recorded at the year end. IE remarked that no financial assistance from grants had been used. On the proposal of Paul Clayton and seconded by Richard Morton, with all in favour, the report was received.

RE-ELECTION OF DIRECTORS

Based on the revised Articles of Association adopted in 2017, whereby one third of the board would need to retire following a rolling programme each year, Hugh Wright proposed that Pat Lunn be re-elected to the board. Anne Tipple seconded this proposal and Pat Lunn was duly re-elected. All were in favour. On the proposal of Trish Winterbottom and seconded by Geoffrey Crawford, Anne Tipple was re-elected to the board. All were in favour.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER

Hadfields and Becky Parkinson in particular were thanked by Geoffrey Crawford for their work on the accounts for 2021. This was seconded by Pat Lunn and Hadfields were duly appointed for 2022. It was noted that this post should be put out to tender for 2023 after 3 years by the same firm.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS

Hugh Wright asked a question regarding membership fees. Ian Else replied that fees were reviewed frequently but would remain free at the present time.

PRESIDENT 2023

Steve Flewitt invited Canon Tony Kaunhoven to be President for the coming year. Steve said that it had been a pleasure to be president following his many years of involvement with the Society. He thanked Bridget Hope and Adelle Draper for their work and help, particularly with the inaugural Country Festival. He remarked that the role had given him a far better overview of all the work involved in putting on a show. He hoped that Tony would enjoy his year as President as much as he had and observed that ‘it’s not a walk in the park’.

PRESIDENT ELECT

Canon Tony Kaunhoven proposed Martin Ambrey as President Elect. He informed the meeting that Martin had been involved on the vintage tractor/machinery side of both Farm to Plate and the Country Festival and was a link to its agricultural roots and would help guide the Society in the right direction.

As there was no further business, the President thanked everyone for their attendance and declared the meeting closed.

DIRECTORS’ REPORT 2022

In my report for 2021 I looked forward to the future with optimism. I am pleased to report that 2022 was indeed a year when much happened to support that view.

The Society’s events in the year were the Bakewell Country Festival held in July and the Christmas Sparkle held in November.

It was great to see the showground brought back to life for the Country Festival which was well supported. Bakewell Dog Show once again lived up to its top reputation with excellent entries and heavy horse classes also provided a great spectacle for the festival. Amongst other activities within the event were vintage tractors, farriery demonstrations, chain saw sculpturing, a kids’ zone with lots of activities for younger visitors and music.

The day was blisteringly hot, which kept food and drink retailers happy, and there were many other stands in and around the centre ring. Our President in 2022 was Mr. Steve Flewitt and as a great shire horse supporter, he had an excellent day and enjoyed meeting many visitors to our event.

Our second Christmas Sparkle event was bereft of heavy snow this year but nevertheless sparkled and all had a safer journey home. The event once again proved very popular with the ABC concourse thronged throughout the day and visitors being enticed by local producers and products. Once again Santa and his reindeer found time to join us.

The society is grateful to those who sponsored our events and also to those who volunteered as stewards on either of the days. Thank you.

Work continued to make the showground a safe and attractive place. Professional advice was sought with respect to electrical installations and work to update the installations was carried out. A major land drain near the southern edge of the showground was found to be blocked and was replaced, and as and when necessary boundary fencing was repaired.

The Society was pleased to continue a policy of offering grants to people of whatever age for training within the agriculture/horticulture/arboriculture sectors and several grants were made during the year and our quarterly newsletter also keeps Society members up to date with our events.

At the Society’s AGM the Rev. Tony Kaunhoven was confirmed as President for 2023 and we hope that he has an enjoyable year. Mr. Martin Ambrey will be President elect and he has for very many years been involved with the vintage tractor section at BAHS events.

Bridget Hope continues to do an excellent job as Society Manager and together with help from Adelle Draper in supporting our events, website and presence on social media, and Pete Lownds who assists the Society with showground maintenance – not forgetting the ‘woolly mowers’ – there is plenty for the Society to look forward to.

The Society is always sad to hear of the death of members or supporters and to this end we want to record the passing of Richard Morten. Richard was a director of the Society for many years and also served a term as President of Bakewell Show.

The Morten family have been supporters of the Society for several generations – and indeed they continue to be so. We offer our condolences to Richard’s family and others who may have lost loved ones during the year.

Looking at other happenings on the showground we were pleased early in the year to join with Bakewell Rotary Club to plant a number of trees, species native to the UK, on the Society’s land known as ‘Big Bend’. We hope that in due course the result will be a small stand of trees.

We were also pleased to be able to provide a suitable site for a circus visiting the town. Late in the year as part of their plans to prevent flooding in Bakewell the Environment Agency carried out some work on the Society’s land closest to the river. We all hope that despite climate change the defences will not be tested too often.
