LEGAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE DETAILS
The Fovant Badges Society is a Registered Charity – No. 1045087 and is governed by a constitution, which was adopted by the Society at a meeting held on August 15[th] 1994, and amended according to changes unanimously adopted at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Society on May 24th 2006. There have been further amendments on May 20th 2009, May 19th 2010 and May 25th 2011. These amendments were accepted by the Charity Commission.
The objects of the Society are to maintain and preserve the regimental crests on Fovant Downs, Wiltshire, thereby furthering the education of the public and promoting ‘esprit de corps’.
The full name of the Society is The Fovant Badges Society. The address for correspondence is Anam Cara, Dinton Road, Fovant, Salisbury, Wiltshire SP3 5JW.
Our Patron is the Duke of Edinburgh KG GCVO CD ADC(P)
Our President is General Sir Nick Parker KCB CBE.
The management of the Society rests with the voluntary Executive Committee, elected at the AGM. The following Committee members are Charitable Trustees:

The Society’s bankers are National Westminster Bank at the Salisbury branch. The administration of the Society is carried out entirely by voluntary effort. Mr. Francis Taylor acted as the Society’s Independent Examiner of the accounts for the year ended March 31st 2026. The gross income of the Society exceeded £25,000 but was less than £500,000.
REPORT
Report from our Chair, Mrs Jose Green
The British Legion’s Poppy Appeal culminates on the 11th November with the laying of wreaths and two minutes silence, which gives us the opportunity to reflect upon the horror and consequences of warfare. We who live in, near, or just passing through Fovant, have a unique reminder of The Great War. When gazing upon the badges on the magnificent downs, our thanks go to those many soldiers who passed through Fovant and carved them. We who remain must ensure that the constant upkeep to maintain them is guaranteed.
Along with my fellow trustees, we are hugely grateful to the support we receive; this is very much emphasised at our Annual Drumhead Service always held on the first Sunday in July being the closest to the Battle of the Somme.
Last years’ service was unique, due to the storm destruction of the barn at East Farm we were more than grateful to the Hitchings family at West Barn who stood up to the plate to accommodate the service and tea afterwards. Still in view of the Badges, Dr Phil Harding was our guest speaker. Many of you will know him from his televised archaeological programmes but his address was so poignant I’m sure that it will be long remembered in the memories of those in the large congregation.
Fovant Badges Society relies on a good attendance at The Drumhead as it is our main fund-raising event. That is not to say that we are complacent in highlighting other opportunities to bring Fovant Badges into the public’s awareness. Television and Radio 4 programmes have proven to be popular, 4 and we now have the new information board in situ in the viewing lay-by on the A30 where the trifold leaflet is available to take home. We are grateful to Tony Philips who is giving talks together with Martin Wallis who arranges them.
I’m sure you all agree the Badges look good. It’s been quite a challenge to the contractor J and J Hooper and on behalf of the trustees we give our thanks.
We look forward to continuing to maintain the badges in future years.
