REPORT

Report from our Chair, Mrs Jose Green

We are all witnessing some distressing times with wars throughout the world being aggressively fought. The contrast of the rolling downs of Wiltshire to what we see in the press and television makes us all very thankful. It might also make us remember the troops in the First World War and what they might think of the world today. As a lasting tribute and constant reminder, the Trustees are adamant we ensure we do our utmost to retain the badges in near pristine condition. We intend to reach out to other organisations to help us spread the word. The Society has a number of aspirations, it all takes time, and we are most grateful to the late Margaret Mackenzie for her generous bequest and to whom we will dedicate a new Information board. This will be located at the viewing lay-by along the A30.

The Fovant Badge Society are thrilled to welcome three new trustees. Oliver Chamberlain, Peter Harvey and Martin Wallis. We are very grateful to them for ‘joining up’ and we look forward to working with them.

This year the maintenance on the badges was carried out by J & J Hooper of East Melbury, Dorset. They have done a splendid job, and the badges look in really good condition.

On July 7th 2024, the annual Drumhead Service was held at East Farm, Fovant. The service is always held on the nearest Sunday to July 1st which was the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Not knowing how large the congregation might be, it was so encouraging that almost 280 guests, members of the Society, friends and residents came to the service and joined in the rousing hymns accompanied by The Shaftesbury Silver Band. British Legion standard bearers stood proudly in respect alongside detachments of the Wiltshire ACF which added to the occasion. The service was led by The Revered Colin Fox. As the Guest of Honour, Lt. General Sir Nick Pope gave an appropriate address. Amongst many others, the congregation included the High Sheriff of Wiltshire, the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, The High Sheriff of Dorset, Mayors from local Councils, and Mr. John Glen MP for Fovant. Afterwards, despite the wet weather, many guests remained in the barn where tea and cakes were enjoyed.
