## **FOVANT BADGES SOCIETY TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT** ## Year Ended March 31st 2023 ## LEGAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE DETAILS The Fovant Badges Society is a Registered Charity – No. 1045087 and is governed by a constitution, which was adopted by the Society at a meeting held on August 15[th] 1994, and amended according to changes unanimously adopted at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Society on May 24th 2006. There have been further amendments on May 20th 2009, May 19th 2010 and May 25th 2011. These amendments were accepted by the Charity Commission. The objects of the Society are to maintain and preserve the regimental crests on Fovant Downs, Wiltshire, thereby furthering the education of the public and promoting ‘esprit de corps’. The full name of the Society is The Fovant Badges Society. The address for correspondence is Anam Cara, Dinton Road, Fovant, Salisbury, Wiltshire SP3 5JW. Our Patron is the Duke of Edinburgh KG GCVO CD ADC(P) Our President is General Sir Nick Parker KCB CBE. The management of the Society rests with the voluntary Executive Committee, elected at the AGM. The following Committee members are Charitable Trustees: Mrs Jose Green - Chair Mr David Gorse – Honorary Secretary and Membership Officer Mr Terence Lister - Honorary Treasurer Mr Leslie Brantingham – Conservation Officer Miss Helen Roberts – Publicity and Newsletter Officer Mr Richard Lord - Trustee The Society’s bankers are National Westminster Bank at the Salisbury branch. The administration of the Society is carried out entirely by voluntary effort. Mr. Francis Taylor acted as the Society’s Independent Examiner of the accounts for the year ended March 31st 2023. The gross income of the Society exceeded £25,000 but was less than £500,000. ## REPORT ## Report from our Chair, Mrs Jose Green As I write these few lines by way of introduction one cannot help but think of the similarities the present day has with those post First World War years and early 1920’s. A pandemic and a war back-to-back, with all the atrocities and heartbreak that comes as a consequence of both. But we must continue to ensure that the lasting memorial of the Badges will remain in high focus as we go forth into the future. Although not from a military background, I have lived under the shadow of the Royal Warwickshire and the 7th City of London Badges in Sutton Mandeville for 50 years; the large South Camp field has always been part of our family history as it was requisitioned from the Green family for the duration of WW1. Many a story of the training and demobbing of the soldiers has been passed down through the 4 generations that have farmed in that area since then; from gruesome to poignant and from highly exaggerated to blatant untruths have all been told but still the lasting memory through the many mementoes, artefacts and archives that remain, is part of our local history as well as our national pride. We must preserve it all. The Anzac Day service on the 25th of April at Compton Chamberlayne was a very moving occasion and a rewarding challenge to climb up to the Map of Australia. How lovely it is to have a good vista of the map now the trees have been felled along the A30. His Majesty’s Coronation was an uplifting occasion, with centuries of tradition and pageantry mixed with more modern touches. My role on picking up the mantle from those before me is to ensure there is greater cohesion and commitment from all those who want to ensure that the memory of those that gave of their all and for all that it stood for, lives on forever.
