The Fovant Badges Society is a Registered Charity – No. 1045087 and is governed by a constitution, which was adopted by the Society at a meeting held on August 15[th] 1994, and amended according to changes unanimously adopted at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Society on May 24th 2006. There have been further amendments on May 20th 2009, May 19th 2010 and May 25th 2011. These amendments were accepted by the Charity Commission.

## REPORT

## Report from our retiring Chairman, Brigadier Mark Elcomb.

It is with mixed feelings that I step down from chairmanship of this unique Society, but after ten years it is right that I hand over to someone who can maybe add a different perspective to the Society’s activities now. Looking back to when I assumed the role, encouraged to do so by our late president General Sir John Wilsey, the board was some 12 people strong; the conservation work was done in large measure by contractors; the annual public focus was the drumhead service; the centenary of the first badges was on the horizon; The Emblems Restaurant had recently closed and Tony Phillips spent more of his time than he expected taking the story of the Badges to audiences across the region rather than waiting for them to come to Fovant; and of course Tony Pinder was still taking a close interest in what we were doing to continue the work recommended in his report at the turn of the century. Today the governing body is 5 people, the conservation work has been adapted in practical ways to use available teams (both military and civilian) to reduce contract costs, and for reasons which we all know, we have not held a drumhead service since 2019. In parallel with continuing maintenance of the Badges we have seen the creation of our Centenary Poppy, the resurrection of the Sutton Down badges under the aegis of the Sutton Mandeville community and the ‘exposure’ of the Compton Down Map of Australia as a direct result of Helen Roberts’ inspiring energy. In short, all has changed but nothing has changed, for which reason I am delighted to be able to hand over responsibility to Jose Green who probably needs no introduction to the Fovant community. As a local resident, well versed in the history and context of the Badges, she is better placed to guide the Society now than this mal-located incomer from the Wylye Valley. She will be excellently supported by the small but perfectly formed team to whom I owe a huge debt of thanks. I can assure you that the Society meets all of the Charity Commission regulations and it is solvent. Its conservation plans and programme are sound and funded and its profile remains high. It has been a privilege to be associated with you all.

Our website (www.fovantbadges.com) now includes much information including photographs, videos and archives.

## Report from our new Chair, Mrs Jose Green

As I write these few lines by way of introduction one cannot help but think of the similarities the present day has with those post First World War years and early 1920’s. A pandemic and a war back-to-back, with all the atrocities and heartbreak that comes as a consequence of both. But we must continue to ensure that the lasting memorial of the Badges will remain in high focus as we go forth into the future. Although not from a military background, I have lived under the shadow of the Royal Warwickshire and the 7th City of London Badges in Sutton Mandeville for 50 years; the large South Camp field has always been part of our family history as it was requisitioned from the Green family for the duration of WW1. Many a story of the training and demobbing of the soldiers has been passed down through the 4 generations that have farmed in that area since then; from gruesome to poignant and from highly exaggerated to blatant untruths have all been told but still the lasting memory through the many mementoes, artefacts and archives that remain, is part of

our local history as well as our national pride. We must preserve it all. As I write this, arrangements are being made for the Anzac Day service on the 25th April at Compton Chamberlayne. It’s a very moving occasion and a rewarding challenge to climb up to the Map of Australia. How lovely it is to have a good vista of the map now the trees have been felled along the A30. Also, Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in June is fast approaching. Beacons are to be lit on the downs and celebrations made to commemorate such a unique occasion; members can read the details in our newsletter. Compliments are due to Leslie Brantingham who once again has risen to the occasion. His commitment and enthusiasm is commendable. My role on picking up the mantle from those before me is to ensure there is greater cohesion and commitment from all those who want to ensure that the memory of those that gave of their all and for all that it stood for, lives on forever. I look forward to doing my bit.
