Chairmans Report March 2022

We have had a surprisingly good year with our regular users slowly coming back and we have gained a church service on Sunday mornings with the Free Church using the main hall so they can have more space. The surgery took the hall again in the autumn for the flu jabs (which could possibly/hopefully be an annual event) and the large space that we can offer here has been to our advantage with the need for social distancing.

Jim Fleming has done a wonderful job on a new cupboard in the kitchen to house our increased numbers of plates and cutlery. He gives his time and we are very grateful. We now have covers for 160 for events in the Hall. Also in the kitchen, Malcolm Foster has made a piece of stainless steel to fill the gap between the cooker and the wall.

There have been the usual small maintenance jobs over the year and replacement of various items including one of the fridges in the kitchen. The overflow from the hot water tank in the gents toilets has been stopped after years of dripping – apparently it took 5 minutes to fix, similarly the long term hot water problem in the kitchen sinks has been fixed.

We now have an overhead projector in the main hall and as we also now have a TV licence we are able to see all sorts of events on the screen should we want to. This will be useful for the Jubilee Celebrations and there are plans to have a fund raising event based round some rugby internationals. If this is not a success, or much used in the future, we can always cancel the licence. The projector will also make showing of films by the film club and illustrating talks much better and do away with lots of wires.

I would like to thank the members of the Committee who have helped in many ways over the year both with advice and physical help.

Tony Richardson is moving away to live nearer his family and I have thanked him for all he has done for the Hall over the years. At meetings he would quietly make very sensible suggestions and he was responsible for suggesting and putting up the rails in the back room and upstairs to stop the chairs damaging the plaster and also for the high rails in the main hall so that decoration for various events can be attached without damaging the walls. I think he was the embodiment of a perfect committee member – someone who suggests and then does!
