2[nd] Malvern Scout Group Aian GSL Report to the 2022 AGM Marilyn Wood 31[st] May 2022
At last - from 6[th] September 2021 the Scout Association declared that our Covid-19 status became Green and we returned to essentially normal activities. We are maintaining an enhanced hygiene regime and, a s Peter has stated in his Chair’s report , if you have any concerns over Covid-19 please do not hesitate to contact us.
The Group has emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic in a healthy state, both financially and in membership. This is due to the efforts of the Section Leadership teams, the Executive, in particular Fiona, our treasurer and Shaylene our treasurer and especially the commitment to the Group by the young people and their parents. A big thank you to you all.
I commend to you the individual section reports which describe how we have returned to more normal face-to-face activities, which are clearly welcomed and enjoyed by the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts – as well as the Leaders. The Sections are all near to full capacity and our waiting list is well under control. Thanks to Christine for managing our waiting list and movements between sections.
Fund raising is getting back to normal with hall hires and a welcome return to our annual visit to the RHS Spring Show in May. Thank you to Andy and Tracy for organising our clear up activity in the Floral marquee and to the young people and parents who supported it, raising £635 for Group funds.
– The Group needs to recruit more adult members across all sections leaders, helpers and executive committee members, either full or part-time, to ensure we continue to provide a high quality and exciting programme for all our young people. We also need to find a Group Scout Leader (GSL) – no previous experience necessary!
If you are interested in finding out more and how you can help, then please contact either a section leader, GSL or executive committee chair. It is a very satisfying and fun!
Finally, I commend the Group annual report to you and seek your continuing support to our leadership teams in providing the best possible Scouting programme and we seek your views on the way forward for the Group and how we can continue to extend access to the Group and the range of Scouting activities we can provide. A big thank you to you all for your support of 2[nd] Malvern Scout Group.
2[nd] Malvern Beaver Colony Annual Section Report 2021 – 2022
Well, I guess this is the year that we started to see some sense of normality return but still with some occasional Covid blips. When we wrote last year’s report, we were about to have our annual water night but this had to be cancelled due to leaders self isolating due to Covid. However, instead we started the Autumn term with a night of water slides and water fights which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.
The Autumn term was a little disjointed due to leaders not being available due to health and family issues but we still managed a night hike followed by chips, building monsters and thinking about Armistice.
We completed our communicators badge including learning about codes and using the phone and email.
One activity we tried for the first time was ice skating. Luckily we had some help from parents and family members
who could help pick up and move the beavers around the ice rink. Everyone had a great time and no fingers were lost.
Another really interesting night was when we had a visit from Paramedic Tom. He came and chatted about his job and let us try out some of his equipment. It seemed obvious to follow this up with completing our first aid badge where we learned how to put someone in the recovery position, deal with burns and cuts and also call for an ambulance.
We’ve also completed our cook badge learning about hygiene and safety and
cooking and baking some tasty treats.
During the winter months we spent some time thinking about other
countries. We celebrated Chinese New Year with some dragon and lantern crafts. We also tried yoga, dancing the Haka and trying foreign foods. We also completed our experimenter badge including a favourite night of dropping eggs and building contraptions to hopefully stop them breaking.
6
We’re in the middle of our summer term which tends to focus on outdoor and scouting activities. We’ve been putting up tents, learning to tie knots and cooking on fires. We’ve also got a couple hikes planned around the hills so hopefully the weather will be kind. All the children have also been planting some seeds and we look forward to seeing how their beans and sunflowers are doing.
We’ll hopefully finish as we started with our water night and, all being well, no Covid blips.
During the lockdowns our numbers fell as no one really wanted to join whilst we were on line. However, this year we have seen them steadily rising back up and we currently have 20 beavers. This does mean our challenge is back to having enough leaders. We currently run with three adult leaders but as mentioned we have struggled a little and only
managed with the help of other section leaders and some parents. My annual plea still holds, if you could spare some time we’d really welcome an extra adult to help with our evenings.
I’d like to thank Rachel and Christine for all their time as well as Mike and Marilyn for helping out when needed. Also, thanks to Jacob and Hannah who have been helping as young leaders.
I hope everyone has a great summer break and we’ll see you back in the Autumn.
Graeme

Raleigh Cubs annual report 2022
This time last year we were all back meeting face to face with many activities including, the disability badge where the cubs tried completing day to day tasks with a disability, Science experiments, first aid, tracking, pioneering, map and compass, orienteering, health and fitness, wide games, fire lighting and cooking. We spent a couple of weeks learning about COP26 and looking at how we are impacting the environment.
We finally got permission from the scout association to camp, which after a4 careful consideration, detailed risk assessment and a kind offer from . Alison and Kevin we setup camp on their land in Leigh Sinton. We would like to express our grateful thanks to them both for all their support during the weekend to help make it a memorable event. Halloween also gave us another opportunity for a sleepover following an afternoon of fun and games.
We have also been able to do more adventurous activities, such as Air rifle shooting, Archery, Climbing at Redpoint in Worcester and more recently at Go Ape in Kidderminster.
I would like to give thanks to Tony Tyler and Maureen Brown, previous leaders at 2[nd] Malvern, who after a little persuasion have agreed to come back and help at cubs. Graeme Barclay, who has been helping with cubs as well as continuing as a section leader with Beavers, Mike and Marilyn, who have been amazing with their continued support with running the pack as well as the group. Christine Warner who has kept track of the attendance and badges and being an extra pair of hands when required, this has really saved me a great deal of time between meetings and is really appreciated. Sam Kelm also joined us last year as a young leader and has become a real asset to have in the pack, thanks Sam.
We are still working very closely with Drake, the Thursday night cub pack, and I would also like to thank all the leaders for their support.
Future planned activities include a summer camp at Kinver Edge in July, and a possible London trip in October half term.
If any of you would like to consider helping as a leader in the Cub pack please let us know and you can come along, for a few weeks, without any commitment and find out if it is something that you wish to consider supporting whether as an occasional helper or section leader.
Yours in Scouting
Ryan Heath (Akela) Cub leader Raleigh Cubs
2nd Malvern Cubs - Drake Pack Annual Section Report 2021- 2022
Drake Cubs Section Report
Drake (Thursday) cubs has 20 cubs, 4 leaders plus a Parent helper and a brilliant young leader. We continue to run a shared programme with Raleigh cubs and have done a whole range of fun stuff both at the hut and out and about.
This year we have seen 4 of our cubs achieve their Chief Scout Silver awardand another extremely close to completing his. 8 of the cubs have moved on up to scouts and we have been able to welcome 7 cubs who are completely new to the movement plus 4 up from Beavers.
It has been brilliant having the cubs back in person and we have tried to be out and about as much as we can.
Last summer we enjoyed a wonderfully relaxed and fun camp at Leigh Sinton- the first camping experience for many of the cubs and a real treat after the pandemic, even if we did all have to self-isolate afterwards due to one case.
Other highlights this year have been climbing at RedPoint, Worcester and going to Go Ape in the Wyre forest for a day of climbing and Wide games. 6 Cubs represented our pack at the District St Georges day parade in Colwall and 9 attended the district Jubilee Tea party at Warren Oak.
2[nd] Malvern Scouts – Scott Troop Annual Section Report 2021 – 2022
In last year’s report we had not been able to go camping, and I am happy to say that in the year since the last report we have been able to go camping twice and have another camp planned for later this month.
Our first camp was a weekend camp in August at the hut and featured a guided tour of the Morgan Factory, during which the scouts got to have a go sitting in a Morgan car. This was followed by a weekend camp at the end of October at Warren Oak Campsite just outside Ledbury.
During the autumn term we took part in the group Bonfire night, made indoor catapults that could launch balls the length of the hut and had an outside Christmas party, which included the scouts working in teams to mummify one of their team using toilet rolls.
The spring term featured board games, whittling, cooking, navigation and another indoor pioneering challenge, this time trying to burn through a rope from approximately 3m away to recover a bag of biscuits (some were only crumbs by the time they were recovered).
After the Easter holiday we took part in the district St George’s day parade in Colwall and the District Jubilee Fun Day and Tea Party at Warren Oak. We also started focusing on the expedition challenge badge, which will be finishing with an expedition style camp at the end of the month. To prepare the scouts we have been teaching them how to erect hiking tents, use Trangia stoves and write route cards.
During the year our numbers have continued to grow, with cubs moving up from the cub packs but also moving in from other groups such as 7[th] Worcester who sadly don’t have enough leaders to run a scout troop any more. This increase in numbers has meant that we have been able to move from two patrols to three, which gives more of the scouts a chance at leadership and also makes the patrol competition a bit more competitive.
All of the above camps and Friday evening meetings have only been possible due to my awesome team of leaders, Dave, Luke and Dion, and also the support of the scout parents and Marilyn and Mike who look after the hut and solve all sorts of random problems that we as leaders have (even if it’s gone 9pm on a Friday).
There is nothing else to say now other than that it’s been a good year, and onwards and outwards.

Shackleton Scout Troop Annual Report 2022
Dear Parents, Carers and Supporters,
We started our scouting year in September 2021, by which time the series of COVID lockdowns were over (for the present at least). Although we were still obliged to wear face masks, practice social distancing, etc., it was a relief to get back to face-to-face scouting and some semblance of normality!
The Section had 16 scouts at the start of the year, due to 12 Scouts moving up during the previous term, nine of whom achieved their Chief Scout’s Gold Award. Since then, the section has grown rapidly again to its maximum complement of 24 scouts, with more in the pipeline.
Over the past year, the scouts have made significant progress towards a wide variety of badges, including Pioneer, Emergency Aid, World Challenge, Personal Challenge and Survival skills, to name a few. In total, 56 badges were awarded this year, which is a great achievement by the scouts. In addition, two scouts are due to move up to Explorer Scouts at the end of this term and we fully expect them to achieve their Chief Scouts Gold Award.
Another notable achievement was the support the scouts provided in December to the local Food Bank, where the scouts collected and donated 43kg of food (the Food Bank measures the weight, not the value), and spent an evening sorting food and learning about the charity. Shackleton Troop also supported a Group fundraising event at the Three Counties Flower Show in May which raised approximately £750 for Group funds.
Now that we are back to face-to-face scouting, we are able to run camps again. We ran a weekend ‘practice camp’ in March, which is intended to introduce camping to the newer scouts. The camp included a hike in the Malvern Hills and provided an opportunity for the scouts to practice several new skills, including navigation, firelighting, cooking on open fires, and the use of knife, axe and saw.
A week-long summer camp at Torbay, Devon, is planned for the summer holidays. The scouts will set up camp and cook all their own meals (and wash-up!). Activities will include a hike to Hay Tor on Dartmoor, a boat trip to Brixham, several beach visits and a trip to a local flume park. They will also get a chance to participate in a range of fun activities, including shooting, grass sledging, crate stacking and socializing with other scouts.
A ‘survival skills’ weekend camp is planned for September, where the scouts will have the opportunity to camp out in hammocks, cook over open fires and learn about foraging for food. So, there’s lots to look forward to!
The leaders would like to thank the Executive Committee for the support it provides to Shackleton Troop to allow all these amazing activities to take place.
The Leaders, Shackleton Troop
Pioneering – building structures with ropes, knots and lashings
Helping at the Malvern Flower Show and local Food Bank
Investing new scouts
Learning some new skills at a weekend camp

2nd Malvern Scouts Group
Annual Report 2021 to 2022
The past year has seen many changes and challenges in our working and personal lives. One stable point has been the Scouting provided by 2[nd] Malvern Scout Group. Throughout the challenges of the Covid-19 restrictions the Beaver, Cub and Scout sections have continued to provide programmes, both face to face and via video / zoom links, to keep scouting going and to provide your children with rewarding, educational and fun activities.
This has been achieved by a huge effort of the Section Leaders led by our nominated Group Scout Leader, Marilyn. I would like to pass on my personal thanks, and I am sure you will join me in thanking all the leaders, young leaders and supporters who have done so much over the past year to keep scouting going.
Now that we are back to the “new normal” I am pleased to see that weekend activities and normal scouting programmes have resumed. Please do support your sections by getting involved, but if you do have any worries about Covid or safety please do air these concerns to me or your leaders so that we can address any issues and get as many children back to having fun as possible. Also, if you would like to help at any Section meetings or activities, please do let your section leader know. They will be more than pleased to welcome the additional support.
You will have seen from the financial report that the accounts are in a healthy state. This is due to the hard work and dedication of our Treasurer, Shaylene, who diligently monitors the account activity. This “behind the scenes” role is hugely important within a Group and I would like to thank Shaylene for her hard work and support over the past year.
The administrative arm of the Group, the Executive Committee, oversee the safe working of the Group, ensuring the sections have enough funds and the buildings, equipment and grounds are properly maintained and administered. The committee meet every 3 months to discuss any issues, vote on any proposals and arrange for any actions to be completed. If you would like to join the team, please do let us know. New faces are always welcome. My thanks go the whole committee and to our Secretary, Fiona, who takes all the minutes and has compiled the Annual Report. Without the committees support and dedication the Group would not function as well as it does.
I also must mention Mike, who in the past has occupied this position as Chair but has continued to support the Group by maintaining the buildings and being on call for all sections and the Pathways group if a problem has occurred at the Headquarters. He and Marilyn have also managed the external hire of the hall which is in itself is a huge commitment on top of everything else. Thank you for your continued and invaluable support.
The outside areas of our headquarters are a fantastic asset for the Group. However, they do take a lot of maintaining so if you fancy cutting the grass, trimming the hedgerows or a bit of “light” weeding, please do let us know. We can always use another set of green fingers.
Over the past year we have been planning our next big project, an all-weather outdoor activity area. We have a design for the structure and we have planning permission. The next step is to secure funds and then secure a contractor to complete the works. Details of the project may be seen on the main notice board in the hall way. If you have comments, suggestions or ideas to enhance this project please do let us know.
Finally, a big thank you to you the parents and supporters of 2[nd] Malvern. Without your enthusiasm, encouragement and support the sections would not function as well as they do and the children would not as much fun as they clearly do so THANK YOU again for being part of 2[nd] Malvern Scout Group.
