PRESIDENTS REPORT – AGM: Thursday 12[th] May 2022
It seems strange having an AGM so quickly after the delayed last one in September 2021. The good news is that this means normality has returned to our lives and we can look forward to brighter times ahead for all of us.
I find it very hard to understand how we are still thinking of our new building to replace the current Arch, after 7 years of negotiating with Eastleigh Borough Council. Incompetence of Eastleigh Borough Council springs to mind, mainly I believe caused by several changes of staff over the years. Perhaps one day soon we may have some good news. Once again, I thank Rob Furnell for his perseverance in this uphill battle and continued quest to see a conclusion.
“SHREK The Musical “, in February was a great choice, and it was so nice to see “full houses” for all the performances, and the introduction of the Friday afternoon matinee proved very popular. No doubt Nigel will be informing us of some good news regarding the finances for this show. In would like to offer my personal thanks to everyone involved in the show for their dedication and hard work in once again bringing quality theatre to Eastleigh. It was my pleasure to be part of the front of house team and something I look forward to each year.
There have of course been other shows at the Arch which will be mentioned in the Chairman’s Report.
There has been some unpleasantness over the last month, which could easily have been avoided. I hope that tonight, we can bring this to a satisfactory conclusion, move forward and ensure it never happens again.
Finally, may I thank everyone who attended Sues Memorial Service in September and for including her stone in the memorial garden outside of the Arch.

Chairman’s Report – May 2021 – April 2022
Good evening and thank you for making the effort to attend this years’ AGM. Undoubtedly, this has been a much better year for CPYT, and it has been a pleasure to return to normality in recent months. However, it must still be remembered that the first 8 months or so of this year was affected by the pandemic. As always, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to each and every person who has supported CPYT in some capacity over the past 12 months.
I am pleased to report that our weekly sessions were able to take place in person at The Arch from the outset of the year, albeit with some noticeable differences. Sessions were limited to just one hour with a maximum of 15 in any group. Whilst this worked in terms of allowing us to keep going, it was far from ideal, but we made the most of it and it was lovely to see everyone once again.
Following several conversations with The Point and various other stakeholders, we made the decision to go ahead with a summer production. We were bound by a wide range of rules and guidance, including only being allowed a maximum of 8 people on stage coupled with only 3 people in one dressing room at a time with 2 metre distancing enforced at all times.
The Management Committee looked at what options were available and made the decision to present a version of Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens. In the past, this production has involved the best part of 35 – 40 young people but the decision was made to only have the 4 vocalists live on stage and present the 30 monologues using video. It was no mean feat and became a huge team effort to get everything filmed and edited in time. We then hit another problem when one of the leading men contracted COVID in the days leading up to the production and I would like to state my thanks to Kiean Jones for stepping in at the last minute having last performed in the production some 13 years previously. Whilst arguably not up to our usual performance standards, we felt it was important for us to present something both for our young people and also to keep our name out there in the local area.
July normally sees all three weekly groups join together for ‘Through The Ages’. Having missed out completely in 2020, it was decided to try and create something in 2021 that saw all three groups come together. Charlotte was tasked to come up with an idea and on 18[th] July, a film was made based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Again, this process was less than ideal, and we were aware that some were enjoying it much less than others, but we were having to make the best of the rules and guidelines we were under at the time, and I would like to thank everyone involved for their patience and perseverance throughout this period.
In August, the rules were such that we could hold a Family Fun Day at Itchen Valley Country Park. This was a well-attended event and is something that we can definitely look to develop and improve in the future. I would like to thank the small team that took on the management of this event under challenging circumstances.
Music Theatre International (Europe) are one of the largest Rights Holders in the UK and hold many significant production titles. As the ‘end’ of the Pandemic was in sight and things were slowly starting to return to a new normal, MTI made a huge announcement. To celebrate theatres reopening around the country, they put together a one-off concert that could be performed on set dates completely free of charge. The purpose behind this was to assist societies and venues in raising funds that would be required in order to look at staging productions once again. For this production, we were delighted to team up with Pinpoint Productions and I believe that one of the biggest positives to come out of the production, away from the obvious, was the opportunity for our young people to perform and work alongside adults – something many of our cast have never experienced. Also, a huge thank you must go to Nigel Finch and Louise Hodson who took this production on from a creative aspect.
Whilst there was no parade again this year, we were delighted to return to the daytime events at Eastleigh Christmas Lights switch on. This has become one of our favourite events of the year and it was lovely to be back doing things that 2 years previously had been a normal part of our calendar. During this period, we also attended some new events such as Boorley Park and Cherbourg Christmas Fayres along with the Romsey Winter Carnival. I am proud that CPYT continue to do all they can to be a part of the local community.
Although on a much smaller scale and with some trepidation, social events started to creep back into the calendar in early December and as always, I would like to thank Scott for organising the Skittles Evening. The Old Ship Inn continues to be a lovely venue for this event and after such a long absence, it was lovely to have the opportunity to socialise with friends in the run up to Christmas.
Also making a welcome return was ‘Christmas at The Arch’. Our weekly groups had worked hard through the Autumn Term to put together an evening of entertainment which sent us off into the Christmas Holidays feeling that the world of COVID was behind us and that CPYT could look forward to a much brighter 2022.
For several reasons, the decision was made to part company with Charlotte Teschner. She had led our weekly sessions for the best part of 12 months, but it was felt that changes needed to be made. I would like to place on record my thanks to Charlotte for
getting us through the most challenging of times with lessons on Zoom etc. As we moved into January 2022, we were delighted to welcome Petrice Gordon as the leader of Academy and Seniors and were pleased to invite Becky Starks to come back into the Juniors group. I hope many will agree that we have made a welcome return to what CPYT does best.
Moving into February 2022 and we were delighted to return to The Point, free of all restrictions for Shrek the Musical. This production has to go down as one my proudest moments in my 27 and a half years with CPYT. Where do I even start…. The rehearsal process was an absolute dream with the cast being such a great group of young people to work with. They gave their all to give this the production the energy and flair it required. As always, the Creative and Production team worked incredibly hard to deliver on the technical elements of this production. A special mention must go to Michelle Hughes and Jenny Hadley who worked tirelessly on Hair, Make-up and Prosthetics. By far the most complex we have ever undertaken, and I am sure those who were part of, or saw the production will agree that all the time and effort was worth it. The audiences were more than we could ever have hoped for and coming out of the pandemic with only 13 empty seats across the entire week was something we could only have dreamed of. Another special mention must go to Sarah Rich who took the lead on our social media campaign throughout the Shrek process. It was exceptional and all the way through, we received so many comments about what an amazing job she was doing, and I have no doubt that this contributed to the outstanding ticket sales. To finish the project with a profit was the icing on the cake and will be a production that will live in the memory for many years to come.
At the end of March, we were delighted to welcome Pinpoint Productions to The Arch for their production of The Last Five Years. This was the first time we have hired the building out to another group for a production. Not only was their production a success, but it was also lovely to hear so many people compliment the venue. It still staggers me when so many people state that they didn’t even know the building existed. We hope that this is something we can continue to develop and welcome studio style performances into The Arch.
To close this year, our Juniors and Academy presented a production entitled ‘We Go Together’ and our Seniors performed ‘A Modern Musical Showcase’. Both events were well attended and helped us continue to raise much needed funds as we continue our rebuild post COVID. I would like to thank Petrice for her hard work in putting these events together – her first with CPYT and we look forward to many more in the future.
This evening seems the right time to formally announce our production for Spring 2023 which will be performed over February Half Term. The process will get underway in September 2022. I think it is important to highlight to members the current challenges we face in acquiring rights to productions. There are three or four major rights holders in the UK and in order to produce a production, we have to apply for a licence. If something is in the West End or currently / planned to be on a UK Tour, then the rights are almost always withdrawn. Another recent development has been that licence holders are making productions available for schools who follow the National Curriculum and will perform on their own school premises only (Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, Beauty and the Beast, Six to name a few). This currently leaves us in a situation where there is an extremely limited selection to choose from. However, we are delighted that for February 2023, we will be bringing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of CATS to The Point.
The Business Team, founded in 2021, continue to meet when required and continue to work hard on promoting CPYT and assisting in the management of events to raise awareness and funds. Alongside this, The Arch Management Committee continue to have oversight of the building and I would like to thank members of both teams for their ongoing support. The Arch continues to be home to several other local organisations – Ultimate BJJ and Saxophony continue to be regular users and we have recently welcomed Kings Pre-School (formerly Kings Road Pre-School), Blow it with Bex and Southampton Operatic Society.
As we look at the financial report Nigel has put together, it is a fantastic result to have achieved a profit on the year of £5000, especially in the current climate. It is clear to see that our fundraising efforts are a key part of our income and that this is something that we need to continue developing and building on as we move into the next financial year whilst also ensuring that we aren’t putting too much of a financial burden on our parents and families. The three performances at The Arch made a combined profit of £1400 which again highlights their importance to us as an organisation. Probably the biggest disappointment for me is the loss that our Industry Workshops have made. Over the year, we secured Christopher Tendai (currently starring Cabaret) and Joseph Dockree (currently starring in Mary Poppins) to come and deliver Matilda, Hamilton and Shrek workshops respectively. All three of these events struggled to gain interest and for them to make a combined loss of £750.00 leaves us questioning whether we can continue offering these types of events. I would be interested to hear from our junior members and their parents as to whether these sorts of activities are wanted or not.
To give a brief update on the redevelopment of The Arch – nothing really has changed from this time last year. A meeting was held recently with the Project Manager who is still confident that the project will go ahead and is hoping to be somewhere near planning stage around July time. Their biggest problem at the moment is finding somewhere in the borough for CPYT and the hirers of The Arch to use in the interim period.
Due to the delayed 2021 AGM, I was able to make the membership aware of Sue Hearn’s passing. However, it does fall into this reporting year and therefore I think it appropriate to once again pay tribute to a very special lady. As well as being the wife of our President, Sue has been a long-time supporter of CPYT and everything that we do. Always at events, always there to lend an ear or hand of support to those who need it and generally just a pillar of strength for the organisation - Sue was an integral part of the CPYT family. Even since moving to Portugal in 2014, both Colin and Sue made the effort to return to their Front of House duties every February show week. Sue has most certainly left her mark on us all and will be dearly missed.
It is also with great sadness that I need to make the membership aware that Graham Lines has also passed away recently. Graham was a founding member of CPYT and over the years was an instrumental part of everything CPYT did. Although not actively involved with CPYT for many years now, Graham will be missed by us all.
This past month has been one of my worst in my seven years as Chairman of CPYT. I have come the closest I have ever been to leaving an organisation that has been such a huge part of my life since I was eight years old. I truly hope that tonight, this whole situation can be brought to a satisfactory conclusion allowing everyone to move on with many lessons learnt and a focus very much put back onto the 109 young people who currently attend CPYT.
And so, as I come to conclude my report on yet another strange year, I would like to thank you – our members, our parents and families for your continued support in everything we do. Who can predict what the next 12 months will have in store for us but on a personal level, I wish CPYT every success.
On behalf of the Management Team, I wish you all well. Stay safe and we very much look forward to seeing you all again soon.
