The Trustees (Council), together with an Education Subcommittee comprised of approximately 12 other members of the society work together to organise and promote a programme of Continuing Education Symposia (CES) and other events which are open to members of the society as well as non-members including students/residents and those at the start of their pathology career. These symposia also provide an opportunity for toxicological and discovery pathologists (and other scientists working with animal models), clinical pathologists and toxicologists, as well as non-clinical regulatory scientists to learn about recent scientific advances and enhance their continuing professional development. Two CES are run each year with the BSTP providing at each event, at least one free place and also reduced students/researchers studying/working within a relevant scientific field (e.g. PhD students), veterinary pathology residents and professional trainee pathologists working towards a professional qualification (residents) or gaining more experience within the field of toxicological pathology. An Annual Scientific meeting is also organised (sometimes in conjunction with other societies or organisations) for attendees to learn about recent scientific advances and enhance their continuing professional development. Again, the BSTP aim to provide at least one free place and additionally reduced The Annual Scientific Meeting also enables junior members of the profession to present posters or speak about their research in an informal setting. Other short scientific meetings may be organised on an occasional basis. ## **Additional details of objectives and activities** As part of the objectives stated above, the society holds meetings and promotes scientific research and publications relating to toxicological pathology. In addition to the Trustees, the BSTP has an Education Subcommittee comprising volunteers who, using their expertise, encourage, help, and advise those new to the profession to organise events. For all events, a volunteer is appointed as the Scientific Organiser and they (with help and advice from the Trustees and Education Subcommittee) organise the programme and liaise with all speakers and any other organisers. Without the contribution of the volunteers, Trustees, and the Education Subcommittee, the BSTP would not be able to run these events, which attract people to attend not just from the UK and Europe but historically, also from locations including the USA, India, North Africa, and Asia. Whilst the aim for all events is to break even, any surplus funds achieved are used to offset any deficits and enable the BSTP to provide the free place and reduced registration fees at future events for those working Additionally, the BSTP aims to provide bursaries (on request) to help towards the cost of registration and travel from interested members and non-members of the BSTP. ## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** Secretariat: The BSTP Secretariat was successfully transitioned to the Royal Society of Biology in May 2025. The BSTP has its own dedicated point of contact at the RSB and the BSTP geographical/PO Box addresses were updated. The BSTP membership details were transferred to MySociety, from which membership renewal and communication to membership is now managed, in a more efficient fashion than previously. The BSTP Council extended their sincere appreciation to the outgoing Secretariat, who had been working in this capacity with the Society for many years. The topic for the meeting was Developmental Pathology and Toxicology . The 40[th] Annual Scientific Meeting of the BSTP took place on 23-26 September 2025, at the Deansgate Hotel, Manchester, UK. Run in partnership with the European Society of Toxicologic Pathology (ESTP) as genicity in the 21[st] Century: Challenges of -attended (165 participants) and received excellent feedback. As this event took place within the stated time period for this Trustee report, it is included in this document. In 2025 both CES were held as online events (via Zoom) - CES 11: Endocrine System (February 2025) and CES 12: Cardiovascular System (July 2025). The Cardiovascular Educational Symposium held dedicated clinical pathology sessions on one day of the module (for which attendance could be specifically registered) and received positive feedback. For the above events, there was one free place bursary award (for CES 12) and a total of 7 people (1 for CES 11 and 3 for CES 12; 2 for the Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) in York and 1 for the ASM in Manchester) accessing the Approved by the Royal Society of Biology for the purposes of CPD, each symposium counted as approximately 66 credits. Approximately 21.5 hours of educational activity was recorded on Attendance Certificates. 2025 was the 40[th] Anniversary of the BSTP: this was celebrated in different ways, including an event at the Annual Scientific Meeting in Manchester, and the sharing of memories, photographs from previous BSTP events both at the event and via the Newsletter edition in July 2025. The BSTP is still working on a number of initiatives to engage with veterinary studentslgraduates and to provide opportunities for them to make a career in the industry. Engagement activities continued in 2025.. The trainee representative for the BSTP Education Subcommittee attended a careers day at Bristol Vet School in January 2025. where he gave a presentation on working in the field of toxicological pathology. The trainee representative continues to serve as a point of contact for interested residents and informal conversations. There was a change in personnel for trairbee representative at the end of the 202412025 year ( BSTP sponsored publications Toxicologic Pathology continues to be the official journal of the BSTP. The BSTP Council reviewed and endorsed two articles in 202412025, both for the Scientific and Regulatory Policy Committee of the Society of Toxicologic Pathology. Proceedings of the Second Joint BSTP / ESTP Congress are in preparation, with plans to publish these in Toxicologic Pathology.. Two BSTP Council Members were Scientific Organisers for this meeting and are also Associate Editors and reviewers for this manuscript. The BSTP also provides volunteers as follows: - BSTP Representatives on GESC of the INHAND initiative Journal Associate Editors, Editorial Board members, and reviewers Journal (SAGE) Liaison - Podcast Manager for Editorial Board Members of the journal Steering Committee (jointly with the STP and ESTP) BSTP Representative on STP-SRPC and STP-TPF In 2024/2025, the STP and BSTP continued to collaborate and jointly organised three educational webinars (see above . The BSTP organised educational content and the STP provided the information technology infrastructure. **European Society of Toxicological Pathology (ESTP)** the BSTP has a volunteer observer on the ESTP Board and also provides funding towards a sponsored award the BSTP This was awarded at the Second Joint BSTP / ESTP Congress in September to . **British Toxicology Society (BTS)** the BSTP has a volunteer member on the BTS Scientific Subcommittee ( ), providing input into the organisation of the BTS Annual Scientific Meeting, and also leading the organisation of a BSTP-sponsored symposium at the BTS ASM in alternate years (the next BSTP-sponsored symposium is due in 2027). ## **Other Interactions** During the last year, the President ( ) has attended joint videoconferences with Presidents of other global toxicological pathology societies. The Societies also maintain a shared spreadsheet containing all planned educational offerings provided globally. ## **Communication: Newsletter, Social Media, Journal, and Website** **BSTP Newsletter** Two issues of the newsletter in standalone pdf format were published in December 2024 and July 2025, respectively, with individual contributions posted to the BSTP LinkedIn group and BSTP Twitter account. The BSTP LinkedIn group was also used to publicise events to members throughout the year. **BSTP Journal -** _**Toxicologic Pathology**_ **(jointly with STP and ESTP)** one BSTP Council member worked with the publishers during 2024/2025 as an Editorial Board member ( ). In addition, one STP Associate Editor ( ) and several other Editorial Board members are also members of the BSTP. The BSTP continued to offer a preferential subscription rate for the journal to members in 2024/2025. **BSTP Website** Volunteer help ensures that the site is working well. However, the BSTP may, in the future, look to make the website more interactive and expand its functionality, though many aspects are now achievable through the MySociety Portal. **EPSR** An agreement for Deciphex to host the BSTP virtual slide collection, at no charge to the Society, was agreed during 2024 and was announced at the 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting in York. A review of the Reserves Policy by the Trustees in September 2025 resulted in the view that the BSTP could still continue to meet its current obligations, i.e. charitable activities (excluding continuing education symposiums and meetings) and governance for a minimum of 3 years, providing income from donations, subscriptions and activities for generating funds does not significantly reduce. It is the aim of the BSTP Council to maintain and, where possible, increase the reserve fund from year to year. Reserves are held to help the charity to operate effectively. It is the aim of the BSTP Council to keep the level of reserves held under regular review (i.e. a build-up of excess reserves or of reserves being unexpectedly or rapidly depleted), as part of the normal monitoring and budgetary reporting processes. ## **Details of any funds materially in deficit** None ## **Other financial review details** , and any surpluses achieved from the events organised. In addition to this, the BSTP receives a small amount of funding from website adverts, donations, and bank interest. The majority of the is applied to the activities (i.e. educational events, enabling bursaries and reduced registration fees for those in the early stages of their careers). continue to be responsible for the organisation of all BSTP events whilst the began providing financial services in April 2025 and fully assumed the role of Secretariat in May2025. Although a surplus was not achieved in 2024/2025 (the Society made an overall deficit of £4,614), this can largely be explained by the impact of one-off costs such as the RSB Start Up fees, celebration of the BSTPs 40th Anniversary and a one-off payment into a carbon emissions offset scheme. There was a reduction in income from subscriptions and meetings, likely reflecting the ongoing pressures on the industry with employers reducing budgets for memberships and CPD. Going forwards this would be expected to recover, but the Society will continue to monitor this situation carefully. The new Secretariat (under the RSB) is working well under the terms of our current contract. A clear view of any adjustments required (if at all) and any financial implications is unlikely until at least 2025/2026. The costs for event organisation by are clear to Council, and this collaboration will continue for the foreseeable future. As a result of increased income in 2022/2023, the Society became aware that it had exceeded the VAT threshold. Following extensive communication with both HMRC and our Accountants, we were able to confirm that we are currently not required to register for VAT. The BSTP remains in a strong financial position and as a non-profit charitable association, we will continue to reduce the need for increases in membership fees, provide funding for collaboration with and continue to provide reduced registration fees for Trainee/Early Career Pathologist (TECP) whilst also enabling the availability of more bursaries Confidential Page **6** of **8** ## **BRITISH SOCIETY OF TOXICOLOGICAL PATHOLOGY** BSTP PO Box 43 95 Mortimer Street London W1W 7GB, UK website. ## **OTHER OPTIONAL INFORMATION** ## **Future plans** The 2026 41[st] Annual Scientific Meeting will be held as a face-to-face m e e t i n g on 19th 20th November in Cambridge, UK. Veterinary Pathology and will be run in collaboration with The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, with a symposium on mouse pathology as one of the major tracks of the programme. The Annual General Meeting will also be held in person (with an option to attend virtually) at that meeting. During 2026, the BSTP will continue to organise Continuing Education Symposia, so that those who have previously attended have the opportunity to complete the full cycle of symposia. These events will continue to be held virtually (as Zoom meetings). Virtual Continuing Education Symposium 13: Lymphoid and Haematopoietic Systems 3rd 12th February 2026 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 13.00 17.00 (GMT+0/UCT+0). Registration for this virtual meeting was opened after the Annual Scientific Meeting in November. Virtual Continuing Education Symposium 14: Musculoskeletal System and Skin 7th 16th July 2026 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 13.00 17.00 (GMT+1/UCT+1). Planning for the symposium is already well underway. In November 2026 the BSTP plans to organize a training module on Neuropathology, targeted at Pathology residents and designed to integrate into a series of similarly-targeted modules organized by the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover in cooperation with the ESTP, to try and (i) further engage with veterinary pathology residents and positively impact their training and exposure to toxicologic pathology, and (ii) discuss what the BSTP can offer and seek their feedback. The BSTP would also like to try to reverse the historical trend of declining membership, considered to be largely due to an ageing workforce and fewer trainees, as well as industry consolidation. To do this, the society hopes to reach out to those in experimental medicine or toxicology in order to establish their needs and, if necessary, offer them the opportunity for relevant training. Additionally, by increasing collaboration with other societies for meetings, the BSTP will aim to provide relevant education for scientists in other disciplines.
