Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From 01.09.2021 to 31.08.2022

Charity name: Anstey Junior School PTA

Charity registration number: 1043326

Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 To advance the education of pupils in the
school in particular by:
•Developing effective relationships
between the staff, parents and others
associated with the school.
•Engaging in activities or providing
facilities or equipment which support the
school and advance the education of the
pupils.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
This year has seen a number of fundraising
events, which have brought together the
school as a community, as well as providing
vital funds for additional activities and
equipment that the school budget cannot
stretch to. In the autumn, spring and summer
terms, we held Krispy Kreme doughnut sales
which generated lots of excitement in school
as families ordered and then awaited
delivery of their sweet treats. We also held
termly raffles to win themed hampers made
up from items donated by our families, again
creating a buzz in school amongst children,
parents and staff alike. Mother’s and
Father’s Day gift sales were popular with the
children as they chose the perfect present
for their loved one(s), whilst several social
events – Carols Around the Tree, the
Summer Fair and Summer Discos -
combined fundraising with making memories
for our children, their families and school
staff.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 In planning our activities for the year we kept
in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance
on public benefit at our trustee meetings. All
events were designed to engage children at
the school and their families, to build a
community feeling, whilst at the same time
providing a material benefit to children at the
school.

Additional information (optional)

Contribution made by
volunteers
Para 1.38 We are grateful to all the member volunteers
who selflessly give their time and energy to
organise fundraising events for the school.
Many of the experiences children enjoy in
school and much of the equipment they have
available to use would not be there without
these volunteers.

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 Our main expenditure this financial year has
been on large-scale vinyl graphic wall art for
the school. This has considerably improved
the appearance of a number of areas of the
school which were looking a little tired, as
well as providing stimulation for the children
as they read about famous scientists and
inventors in the learning pod area, admire
the vivid children’s book characters in the
school library, study the map of the world
and associated flags in the corridor, find out
what the top places are to visit in Alton on a
stairwell-sized pictorial map and think about
all the fun things they should aim to do
before they leave Anstey Junior School! The
wall art has generated lots of conversation
and delight and continues to do so.
Another highlight funded by the PTA this
year was Treehouse Theatre’s visit to the
school in January to perform a pantomime
for the children. The interactive show was
received with enthusiasm and children
relished the chance to be involved in the
action themselves. For many, this was their
first experience of a live performance and
something they will remember for years to
come.
The PTA also funded a coach to take a
group of children to perform as part of a
large inter-school choir at the prestigious
and historic public school, Winchester
College. The visit also included a tour of the
college and culminated in a performance to
parents at the end of the day. This was an
opportunity not only for children to be
involved in a musical event but for them to
experience an environment that was very
unfamiliar to most.
At the end of the school year, the year 6
children were all able to take away with them
a lasting memory of their time at Anstey
Junior School in the form of a group
photograph, paid for by the PTA.
More practical items purchased for the

school during the course of the year were 4 heavy-duty gazebos for use as sun or rain protection at Sports Day and school social events, as well as plants and chippings to enhance the school grounds and make them a more pleasant environment for everyone.

Financial Review

Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
ofthe period
Para 1.21 Cash at the bank at 31.08.2022 was £20,254
in unrestricted funds and £27,420 in
restrictedfunds.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 We would normally aim to hold
approximately £3,000 of unrestricted funds
in reserve to cover the charity’s operational
costs for the year.
In recent years, our reserves have grown
appreciably as we have sought to raise
money to add a pre-fabricated building to the
school, to act as a home for our breakfast
and after school clubs, provide private
spaces where play therapists, speech
therapists, social workers and other
professionals can work with children and
also provide a space that can be hired out
for community use outside of school hours.
We have now had to drastically scale back
our plans as we have spent at least 5 years
trying to raise sufficient funds for the type of
building we would like and seem unlikely
ever to achieve our target. In addition to this,
some alterations have been made to the
main school building by Hampshire County
Council to allow us to properly accommodate
wheelchair-using pupils; this has resulted in
the creation of a couple of private spaces
that visiting professionals can use, although
our breakfast and after school clubs still
have to use the school hall, rather than
having their own designated space.
The majority of our restricted funds
(£26,500) have been granted to us by
Hampshire County Council and East
Hampshire District Council for the purpose of
purchasing and equipping a building, which
will now be a much smaller structure,
designed for use as a uniform swap-shop to
benefit families at our school by providing
them with good-quality second-hand school
uniform at no cost. We have a date (June
2023) for installation of the building and will
use the restricted funds to cover the cost.
The remainder of our restricted funds (£920
provided by EHDC) are to be used in 2023
too for the creation of a Wildflower Wellbeing
Area in the school grounds.
Our aim now that we are no longer focussing
on a large building project, is to spend as
much as possible of our remaining
unrestricted funds on experiences and
equipment for children currently at the
school.

Additional information (optional)

Policies and procedures
adopted for the induction and
training of trustees
Para 1.51 The current trustees originally became
involved in the PTA as parents and have
subsequently become employees of the
school and as such, have undergone the
relevant enhanced DBS checks to comply
with the school’s child safeguarding policy.
Any trustees appointed in the future would
also be subject to a DBS check.
Parent volunteers with the PTA are not
routinely subject to a DBS check unless they
are likely to be in a situation where they
have unsupervised contact with children. In
the course of fundraising events, volunteers
are in a public place and there are always
school staff on hand to supervise.
All trustees give their time voluntarily and
received no remuneration or other benefits.
