Trustees' Report

The Trustees present the annual report together with the financial statements of the charitable organisation for the year ended 31st December 2023

Objects and aims

The advancement of education of children in the area of Yorkshire particularly relating to the study of the environment by means of recreation and leisure time activities of an enterprising or exploratory nature so to develop their physical mental and spiritual capacities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and as members of society and that their conditions of life may be improved.

Objectives, strategies and activities

Grants of £4850 were approved in the year to eleven young people participating in expeditions throughout the World.

Financial Review

The proceeds of the house at Calder Vale together with existing bank accounts have been transferred to Barclays and Lloyds bank accounts and invested through Flagstone in Nationwide Building Society and Aldermore Bank PLC. The investments are secured and producing interest which is used to provide grant support to young people.

Public benefit

The Trustees confirm that they have complied with the requirements of section 4 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission for England and Wales

Structure, governance and management

Nature of governing document

Yorkshire Schools Exploring Society (YSES) is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. The company was established under a Memorandum of Association and Articles of Association in 1964. In the event of the organisation being wound up members have no liability to contribute to its assets and no personal responsibility for settling its debts and liabilities.

Recruitment and appointment of trustees

The charity trustees for the purposes of charity law and under the organisation’s articles are also members of the Committee.

Organisational structure

YSES is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and the trustees, in accordance with the constitutional document, form the Committee, which is a voluntary body. The charity trustees may create associate or other classes of non-voting membership. Ongoing responsibility for the day-to-day administration is shared between the Chair and Treasurer.

Major risks and management of those risks

The trustees have assessed the major risk factors to which the charity is exposed and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate exposure to them. The risk factors have been vastly reduced due to the change in focus of the charity. The society continues to keep up to date with minor and major risks the society may face and feels appropriate systems are in place to mitigate exposure to them.

1. Charity Status

The charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.

2. Accounting Policies

Basis of preparing the financial statements. These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Section 1A ‘Small Entities’ of Financial Reporting Standard 102 ‘The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland’. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

3. Taxation

The charity is a registered charity and is therefore exempt from taxation.
