Our Short Breaks Service
Fun-ab118y Family Hub
Thanks to the generous 3
year funding from the
Lottery we have been able to expand our work
with Families of disabled children and adultsl
Over the year we supported 107 families, of
which 55 % were from BME background. The
families asked us for help with a range of issues,
the top 3 were Education Health and Care Plan
and schools (43 families), mental health support
{32 families), short breaks (25 families). Ststuto-
ry services are so stretched that they send peo-
ple to us for helpl We organised lots of family
fun days and trips, a parent to parent group and
a free welfare rights service.
Derby City Council was awarded
funding from the Short Breaks
Innovation Fund and asked Fun-abi18y
to support an extra 40 young people
through our clubs and holiday
activities. This increased the number
of children to 124, so we restarted our
Multi-activity Club to meet the
demand. The extra financial support
from the Innovation Fund has helped
us to continue the Short Breaks
Service, which is currently running at
a substantial loss due to inadequate
funding from Derby City Council.

where tha local PCSO came to take partl
For keeping yourself safe week, they made thelr

Hello, my name is Emmal
I'd Ilke to share wlth you my journey so farl
I didn't have a great start in life, I did not finish school or sit
my GCSES. I had my son at the very early age of 18. However,
having my child gave me the drive I needed to go back and
study to gain the qualifications I needed. The journey was not
an easy one but one I certainly worked hard to achieve.
worked in various roles in nurseries and schools in the past
but I never felt I was making a difference, then I stumbled
across the St James Centre. I started as a support worker and
over the 6 years of working here. I have worked my way up to
being the adult service manager where our wonderful team
and I work hard to support and meet the needs of around 30 young disabled adults. Now
every dayy I know we are making a differencel
My favourite thing about St James Centre is how each service user, their family,
volunteers and staff are part of our large, very caring diverse familyl
If I could give a message to anybody It would be "Don't ever stop believing in yourself
and your ability to achieve your full potential. The path may not always be clear but as
they say, Rome was not bullt in a dayl"

St James Governance and Management
Recruitment and Appointment of
New Trustees
Individual trustees are appointed by the Board of
Trustees and serve for three years after which
period they may put themselves forward for
re-appointment. The Memorandum and Articles of
Association require a minimum of 5 trustees at any
one time.
All members are circulated with invitations to nominate trustees prior to the AGM advising them
of the retiring trustees and requesting nominations for the AGM. When considering co-opting
trustees, the Board has regard to the requirement for any specialist skills needed. All members
of the Board give their time voluntarily and receive no benefits from the charity.
Induction and Training of new Trustees
New trustees undergo an orientation day to brief them on their obligations under charity and
company law, committee and decision making processes, the business plan, recent financial
performance of the charity, a brief history of the trust and a copy of the governing trust deed.
During the induction day they meet key employees and other trustees. Trustees are encouraged
to attend appropriate training events where these will facilitate the undertaking of their role.
Risk Management
St James has a Risk Management Policy and Process that has been approved by the Trustees,
which identifies long and short term risks and ensures that controls are put in place to mitigate
them. Procedures are in place to ensure compliance with all statutory obligations, especially
Health and Safety, Employment Law, Safeguarding and Confidentiality. We have contracts in
place to ensure we comply with legal requirements for Human Resources, Health and Safety
and IT.
Responsibilities of the Trustees
la Ensuring the good governance of
the charity and its strategic
direction
El Ensuring correct finan￿ and
accounting is carried out
Managing the charity's resources
responsibly and ensure the charity
is accountable
