Activities and Achievements in 2024-2025
At the start of the academic year 2024/5 our Chair and former Treasurer, Catherine Hill, resigned from the committee after several years of dedicated service to the FoW. This left FoW not only without a Chair, but without the required number of executive committee members to continue as a charity, and in October 2024 the Friends issued an open letter to the school community:
“Thanks to past support, hundreds of current and former Westways children have benefited from more affordable school trips, new IT equipment, a trim trail, Christmas cards, tea towels, leavers’ hoodies, bobble hats and, of course, big events such as the annual Summer Fair, school disco, and donut sales. However, we have reached a point where the Friends of Westways - which is run entirely by parent volunteers, in addition to our work-lives and families - is no longer sustainable with the tiny number of committee members we currently have. For us to continue with our legal status as a charitable entity, we need a minimum of three executive committee members. We currently have only two.
In order to carry on - and for events like the Summer Fair, the school disco, cake sales, tea towels, etc etc to continue - we need more volunteers. In particular we need individuals who are willing and able to share the bigger tasks of managing a charity: planning and delivering larger events, maintaining the webshop, taking charge of some of the set-piece fundraisers, etc.”
The FoW held an Extraordinary General Meeting on Thursday, November 14th, at 8pm, at The Princess Royal pub on Slinn Street and invited everyone with an interest in ensuring the continuation of the PTA to attend.
The meeting was very well attended: Lauren Anderson was proposed and seconded as the FoW’s new Chair, and several new volunteers were co-opted to the committee.
Under Lauren’s leadership and fresh vision the Friends has entered a new era of activities and fundraising, with new subgroups of committee members with specialist areas of interest and new avenues to pursue to fundraise and raise our profile.
Main activities staged during 2024/25
As ever our main fundraising event of the year was our annual Westways Summer Fair in July 2025, which raised an unprecedented £5,630 - another year-on-year record-breaking sum. New for this year was an online raffle which brought in £1,000+ alone, and for a second year we enjoyed a successful sponsorship deal with Haybrook estate agents in Crookes, which brought in £400 (an extra £100 this year for 40 houses, up from 30).
We have continued to hold Krispy Kreme donut sales approx twice a year, very successful school discos / magic evenings for differing age groups off-site at Crookes Social Club (Rachel having formed a very positive working relationship with the manager Maurice Champeau), and new ongoing fundraisers including the School Calendar Project and an Amazon wishlist of reading books for school to support the school’s Reading for Pleasure drive.
Over the summer of 2025, FoW fundraising, along with a win from the Tesco Stronger Starts grant award, paid for new sound proof panelling to be fitted to the ceiling in Mona Hall - a long standing wish of the school, and driven by the commitment of FoW committee member Patrick Callingham to improve the lunchtime experience for pupils. We also paid for a new climbing route to be installed on Mona yard by world class rock climber Steve McClure.
Our focus for the end of the 2025 calendar year has been making plans for the 125th anniversary of the school in 2026 - Westways was opened on 6th May, 1901. We intend our focus for fundraising to be an improvement to the school’s gardens and outdoor space especially on the top Western yard, in the area previously referred to as the Dunblaine Memorial, and meetings have taken place with Mr Hollamby to progress these ideas.
Alongside the usual summer fair, specific anniversary fundraising activities will hopefully include a National Festival Circus on the Bole Hills, an evening with our most famous old boy: the singer Paul Carrack, a Colour Run, a running race, and an afternoon tea with tours of the school - all events to be open to the public / former Westways pupils to forge a closer community link between the school and Crookes and the locality.
After four years on the executive committee as Secretary, Sarah will stand down in an official capacity as Secretary of the FoW at this year’s AGM, although will remain a member of the wider committee, so a new Secretary will be required. Nominations will be sought at this meeting.
This concludes the annual report of the FoW Secretary to the AGM.
Objectives of Friends of Westways (FoW)
Friends of Westways’ aim is to make the school experience even nicer for all our children by:
-
engaging in fundraising activities to offer financial support to specific projects within school;
-
contributing to social inclusion and coherence within the school through events for all children and their families/carers;
-
nurturing a good relationship between staff, parents/carers, and the wider community of Crookes.

’ - Treasurer s Annual Report 2024 2025
It’s been another successful fundraising year for Friends of Westways where we have also worked closely with the school leadership team to identify where to target fundraising and spending towards bigger ticket items and make more significant investments for the benefit of pupils and our school community.
Our standout fundraiser was again the summer fair, raising a record £5628.70. This was a staggering £1514.28 more than 2023-24, which was in itself a record-breaking year. This increase was fuelled by two new attractions: a raffle where we sold over £1000 worth of tickets and a traditional tombola stall which was busy all day. Prizes were generously donated from local businesses, including our star prize of a tasting menu at West10 worth £210, along with a generous contribution of meat for the BBQ. We also decided to bring in external vendors to run a candy floss stall and provide inflatable games which added new interest.
We obtained a Small Society Lottery License in order to run the raffle, inline with the requirements of the Gambling Act 2005. This was a small investment of £40 to obtain the license which means we can run similar raffles for the next 12 months. We used the People’s Fundraising platform to run the raffle virtually and there is considerably more potential through this platform to take donations alongside Gift Aid which we will explore in 2025-26.
Continuing with our hugely popular family discos with the support of Crookes Social Club, we raised £3599 over two events; we already have dates booked for this year. Other significant contributions came from annual Christmas card sales, three Krispy Kreme donuts sales, self-portrait tea towels and gifts which coincided with Mother’s Day and activity related to Westways Cross Country team (refreshment sales, bobble hats and hoodies).
Friends of Westways began this financial year with an opening balance of £32,994.58. At the end of 31/7/2025 FoW had a balance of £43,110.79.
Within this financial year we used the generous 2023-24 legacy funding left by former pupil Peter Gill, to purchase new Chromebooks, iPads, charging trolleys, and ‘Beebots’ to be used in KS1, and a team building games package to be used across the school. We also received a further installment of £10,000 in legacy funding for the 2024-25 financial year, and agreed this would be spent on noise reduction within the Mona Hall in early academic year 2025-26.
£1,920.00 was donated to the school to offer a subsidy on school trips to a number of year groups; this included paying for a music workshop for our Early Years and KS1 children with local musician Martin Harwood. £204.25 was spent on new goal posts following a specific donation from Year 6 leavers to be put towards sports equipment. In addition, we funded new filters for the fish tanks in two classrooms, costing
£34.98, and we showed our appreciation for the school staff with hampers in the staff rooms which cost £96.25.
We were delighted to be able to pay for the development of a new climbing route in the Mona playground which was installed by world-renowned climber Steve McClure, whose children went to Westways and lives locally. Steve was able to secure the materials at a much reduced price and volunteered some of his time; the total cost to Friends of Westways was £600.
A summary of the income achieved from the full range of events and donations is in the table below, and also in the infographic which will be shared with parents and carers via the Westways Weekly newsletter.
We have agreed to continue our focus on fundraising for Reading for Pleasure in the coming year, and have committed to fundraising refurbished book corners in the classrooms, and a gift in the form of a book at Christmas which will be chosen by the teachers for each child. We will continue to build on the success of the Amazon Wish List which saw 76 books purchased for school.
We’re also looking towards the Westways 125 year anniversary and have significant plans to fundraise towards a lasting legacy which will improve the outside spaces in school.
We do not have a reserves policy in place, given that we have no ongoing financial commitments. We will continue to support extracurricular activities and subsiding trips and experiences for the children in 2025-26.
It should be noted that in June 2025 we were one of the chosen charities in the ‘Stronger Together’ fundraising vote in local Tesco stores and were granted £1000. This was confirmed and awarded after the end of the financial year so will be reflected in the 2025-26 accounts.
