Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

The charity provides children, in the local community, with the opportunity to keep fit and active, learning to play hockey in an environment in which they can play socially as well as stretch themselves to achieve at a competitive level, if desired. The charity also promotes communication and teamwork skills amongst the children along with sports education by introducing them to the game of hockey. In support of these objectives, the charity:

A full fixture schedule was prepared at the start of the season incorporating matches and festivals open to all abilities, thus providing all children with frequent opportunities to participate in matches. The charity’s volunteer parents and committee members were instrumental in enabling this schedule to work, with parent managers communicating regularly to parents and umpires, parents managing teams at matches, volunteer umpires supporting fixtures. A local business sponsored match an interclub tournament for all the club members in the under 12 and below age groups.

In addition to friendly matches the charity entered teams into several competitive fixtures; In2hockey County Cup and National League. The charity has continued to nominate players to attend the U13, U14 & U15 Gloucestershire Junior Development Centre, where players receive additional training and the opportunity to compete in more competitive matches. In addition, players have been nominated for the new England Hockey Talent Academy system for players aged 15-18. This is the first year of this system and we have nominated a number of U15 players prior to them moving to U16 squads in other clubs.

The charity is also looking to provide more indoor hockey opportunities for the children and entered both under 12 and under 14 teams into the Copper Box indoor competition in December 2021.

To provide more opportunities for state school players to play 11-a-side hockey we have introduced a Vixen’s program on Saturday mornings for girls aged 12+. Offering an additional weekly hour-long fixture.

The charity has continued to run England Hockey’s Hockey Heroes program for 5-6 year olds. The sessions are run by qualified coaching staff and are supported by Young Leaders aged 14-18, all of whom have previously played for the club and volunteer their time.

In addition, the charity has introduced a Saturday Squad program for 7–8 year olds, to provide an opportunity for children to continue playing hockey prior to joining a club. The sessions are run by qualified coaching staff and are supported by Young Leaders. Sponsorship from a local business provides each player with a CJHC starter kit.

The charity has secured a new online kit supplier, this addressed ongoing concerns from parents regarding poor availability and communication from the previous supplier. In addition, a second-hand kit Facebook group was established for parents to sell on or donate old kit to new and existing members.

Professional Administration

In 2021 the club invested in an hourly paid administrator to ensure consistent communication and continuity in the day to running of the club. This continued in 2021/22 and is likely to increase as a cost to the club as it expands further.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT

Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of Cheltenham Junior Hockey Association

I report on the accounts of Cheltenham Junior Hockey Association for the year ended 30 June 2022, which are set out within these financial statements.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

Basis of independent examiner’s report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the next statement.

Independent examiner’s statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

• to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act and
