The primary source of income for the charity in 2023 was membership fees. The level of activities in the charity was low. The charity did not receive any applications for a travel grant. ## **Risk Management** The Trustees have actively reviewed any risk the charity faces and believe that maintaining reserves at current levels combined with an annual review of the controls over key financial systems will provide sufficient resources in the event of adverse conditions. The trustees have also examined other operational and business risks faced by the charity and confirm that they have established systems to mitigate the significant risks. 5 European Wound Management Association _Report and financial statements 31 December 2023_ ## **Reserve Policy** The reserves of the charity are adequate for the present and the policy is therefore to ensure that all revenue expenditure is on an annual basis covered by income. ## PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2023 For me personally the year 2023 was remarkable. In May, I started my term as EWMA President, taking over from Sebastian Probst. It has so far been a great pleasure and an honour to continue the good work of all the previous EWMA Presidents. The number of activities and scale of work that goes into running and developing EWMA, as one of the world’s most influential wound management organisations, is enormous. I would like to begin this letter by thanking all the people who contributed, including our industry partners, who support and engage in our activities, all members of EWMA Council and EWMA committees and groups, our project and author group members, as well as all our contacts in the EWMA Cooperating Organisations and other partner organisations of EWMA. Below I have outlined some of the major EWMA achievements and events in 2023. ## **THE EWMA 2023 CONFERENCE, MILAN, ITALY** The **annual EWMA Conference** , held in Milan in May 2023, was a big success with 5,006 registered participants from 96 countries and 1,389 scientific presentations and 150 exhibitors. We would like to thank our Italian cooperating organisations AISLeC for the general and scientific collaboration and joint efforts to make the 2023 conference a great success, and AIUC for the great collaboration specifically concerning the programme planning. ## **EWMA PUBLICATIONS** In EWMA, we are always proud to announce new **EWMA publications** to support education and good clinical practice in wound care. Two eagerly anticipated documents were published in 2023: - **Lower Leg Ulcer Diagnosis & Principles of Treatment.** The overall aim of the document is to support a uniform and consistent approach to diagnosis and treatment of lower leg ulcers across Europe, taking into consideration the various structural differences. ##  **EWMA Document: New Technologies for Tissue Replacement.** The document reviews and highlights the new technologies for surgical management of chronic wounds that are currently on their way to the market. This overview document will target wound care specialists with an interest in new therapies, bridging the increasing demand for surgical solutions with the adequate indications in the complex field of wound management. EWMA also worked on **four new documents with planned publication in 2024 and 2025:** - Holistic management of wound related pain (Publication Spring 2024). 6 European Wound Management Association _Report and financial statements 31 December 2023_ - Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (Publication Spring 2024). - Cold Plasma – An emerging technology for clinical use in wound healing (Publication Summer 2024). - Palliative wound care (Publication Spring 2025) My heartfelt thank you to all the contributors and to the readers of the EWMA publications! On the topic of publications, the **Journal of Wound Management** (JWM) has published three issues including three supplements during 2023. A dedicated journal website for publication in standard academic formats was launched in April 2023. The new platform provides improved supporting services for indexation process and online sponsor opportunities. The journal officially obtained Diamond Open Access status in 2023 which allows free access for all publications and no APCs (Article Processing Charges). ## **EWMA COMMITTEES & GROUPS** In 2023, EWMA also introduced several new committees or groups, which reflect the efforts of EWMA to continuously expand our reach and impact on wound management in Europe and internationally: The **EWMA Diabetic Foot (DF) Committee,** established in November 2023, includes members from across Europe and has the primary objective to support the implementation of the IWGDF Guideline for management of the diabetic foot (DF) across Europe. The committee will also collaborate to support more research, prevention of wounds, rehabilitation after amputation, and more education in DF management. Further, it will work with the ‘Diabetic Foot Valley ‘concept designed and tested in the Tuscany Region, Italy, in 2022-2023, to develop regional projects supporting guideline-based organisation of the DF. The **EWMA General Practitioner (GP) Network** was established in August 2023, and plays a pivotal part in achieving one of my set objectives as EWMA president. An important topic that requires efforts from all colleagues involved in wound management is the timely and correct diagnosis of wounds. Equally important is the holistic care of patients which should follow the precise diagnosis. To support this, the GP Network has been established to organise a network of general practitioners from across the world who will work with EWMA to increase the interest and involvement of GPs in wound management. As a tool that may support the involvement of GPs in wound management, EWMA has decided to make the **Wound Navigator[1] ,** a digital checklist for aiding the diagnostic process related to non-healing wounds, available across the EU. EWMA hosts the English version as an independent tool that may be used by > 1 Developed by the Helsinki University Hospital, HUS 7 European Wound Management Association _Report and financial statements 31 December 2023_ healthcare professionals across Europe. The review process and pilot testing will be initiated at the beginning of 2024. The **EWMA Translational Research Group** used the year 2023 to define EWMA's strategic positioning for supporting translational research in wound management. I am excited to announce that the goals for 2024 include developing a comprehensive guide to address technology gaps between research and clinical practice as well as a dedicated focus session on “Product development and translation – from pre-clinical to clinical challenges”. Finally, the **EWMA Innovation Alliance** showcased dynamic initiatives in advancing wound care in 2023. From cutting-edge research presentations to collaborations with international organisations, the Alliance has been at the forefront of promoting innovative research and technology and is planning to build upon these achievements in the coming year. Among the long-standing EWMA committees, the **EWMA Education Committee** was also active in 2023. EWMA arranged several webinars last year, including some very successful events held in collaboration with international and national partner organisations. Examples from Autumn 2023 includes the ‘EWMA & ESVS Joint Webinar: Lower leg ulcer diagnostics and treatment’, the ‘EWMA webinar: Antimicrobial Stewardship - from theory to practice’, and the very well attended webinar on Compression Therapy, held in collaboration with the Portuguese Wound Management Association, APTFeridas, attracting over 1,800 active participants. In addition, EWMA became a partner in the **ERASMUS+ funded project DIGICARE** , aiming to develop e- learning materials and clinical support tools for wound management. EWMA will engage as a consultant in the consortium and will help guide the work towards development of some high-quality materials that will benefit our stakeholders. ## **ON-GOING EWMA PROGRAMMES** EWMA Continued our two long-term programmes in 2023: ## **The EWMA Compression Therapy Programme (started in 2019)** The core objective of the programme, to encourage optimal use of compression therapy in wound management, was supported by new webinars held in national languages and the annual master class on compression therapy, held in connection with the EWMA 2023 Conference in Milan, Italy. EWMA will continue to promote this important area by repeated awareness campaigns and educational activities in 2024. 8 European Wound Management Association _Report and financial statements 31 December 2023_ ## **The Antimicrobial Stewardship Programme (started in 2014)** EWMA Continues our focus on the importance of guiding health care professionals in their use of antimicrobials in wound management and supporting discussions about the need for products that support infection management in wound care. In 2023 the EWMA antimicrobial stewardship group worked on an update of the very popular e-learning module, developed in collaboration with the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) and continued to raise awareness and support education via conference sessions and webinars. The last webinar was held in November 2023 on the topic ’Antimicrobial Stewardship - from theory to practice’. ## **EWMA INVOLVEMENT IN EU FUNDET PROJECTS** In addition to the engagement in the ERASMUS+ project, DIGICARE, mentioned above, the work related to two EU funded projects with EWMA involvement took off: - **DIALECT:** The main objective of the DIALECT project is to establish an innovative, interdisciplinary and intersectoral research and training effort on diabetic foot disease to deliver the next generation of leading, entrepreneurial, and creative scientists who have the expertise, skills and experience to lead the paradigm shift towards personalised medicine to successfully combat diabetic foot disease. - **FORCE REPAIR:** This project aims to develop a 3D printed personalized multifunctional biomaterial to treat chronic skin wounds by applying mechanical tension to activate a pro-regenerative environment (via offloading/shielding) and inducing endogenous tissue regeneration. To do so, 3D printable structured regenerative biological scaffold providing tension relieve will be developed through a combination of successful innovative technologies tailored to patient’s needs. Specifically, a regenerative and antibacterial matrix will be developed through the combination of a unique bioink based on Ag-SH dynamic hydrogel, a mixture of GAGs from umbilical cord, elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs), exosomes, anti-inflammatory/antibiotics nano-capsules and a bio-adhesive. EWMA will support the project objectives and implementation by involving and disseminating information to our network of wound management experts in Europe. ## **EWMA’S EUROPEAN AND INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION** After several years with few face-to-face meetings with our European colleagues and international partner organisations, it was a true pleasure to be able to meet again in larger scale and discuss joint initiatives and collaboration in general. The EWMA conference in Milan hosted successful meetings with the International Partner organisations as well as with the Cooperating Organisations. The focus of the latter was to strengthen the collaboration on social media between EWMA and its main European partner organisations, and, as always, to elect members of council appointed by the cooperating organisations. The leaving members were: - Samantha Holloway, Wales, UK - Pedro Pancorbo Hidalgo, Spain - Alberto Piaggesi, Italy - Kerstin Protz, Germany - Luc Téot, France - Evelien Touriany, Belgium ## **Election: EWMA Honorary Positions** - Andre Pokorná was elected as new Scientific Recorder of EWMA ## **New committee and board chairs** In 2023 the following changes in the EWMA committees took place. - Paulo Ramos replaced Samantha Holloway as chair of the Education Committee - José Luis Lazaro Martinez was coopted by the EWMA Council to take on the role of chair of the new EWMA Diabetic Foot Committee - Sebastian Probst ended his term as EWMA President and started his two-year term as Immediate Past President which by tradition includes the role as chair of the EWMA Cooperating Organisations Board. 10 European Wound Management Association _Report and financial statements 31 December 2023_ ## **EWMA COMMUNICATION** In 2023, we finally started the work on the long-planned update of the EWMA website. We look forward to presenting an up-to-date and user-friendly site which will present all the great EWMA resources in the best possible way. Without a community we are nothing, and, thankfully, **EWMAs community** is continuously growing throughout all its channels. The trustees are required to act in accordance with the trust deed of the charity, within the framework of trust law. They are responsible for keeping proper accounting records, sufficient to disclose at any time, with reasonable accuracy, the financial position of the charity at that time, and enable the trustees to ensure that, where any statements of accounts are prepared by them under section 42(1) of the Charities Act 1993, those statements of accounts comply with the requirements of regulations under that provision. Income is recognised for the period covered by the financial statements as receivable in connection with the Association’s activities. Expenditure is accounted for on an accrual’s basis. ## **Fixed assets** Tangible fixed assets are stated at cost net of depreciation. Depreciation is provided to write off the cost less the estimated residual value of tangible fixed assets by equal instalments over their estimated useful economic lives as follows: Computer equipment - 4 years ## **Accumulated funds** These are available to further the Association’s aims and objectives in accordance with the terms of its constitution. ## **Taxation** No taxation has been provided for in the financial statements, as the Association is a registered charity. 15 European Wound Management Association _Report and financial statements 31 December 2023_ ## **Debtors and Prepayments** There are no prepayments. There are no debtors. ## **Trustees’ remuneration and expenses** No remuneration was paid to the trustees during the year. Please see the auditor’s comments to the Charity Commission below. 16 ## **The independent auditor’s report on review of the annual accounts** To the charity commission of European Wound Management Association We have reviewed the annual accounts of European Wound Management Association for the financial year 1 January to 31 December 2023. Our review comprised accounting policies used, profit and loss account, balance sheet and notes. ## _**The management's responsibility for the annual accounts**_ The management is responsible for the preparation of annual accounts that give a true and fair view in accordance with the Danish Financial Statements Act. Furthermore, the management is responsible for such internal control as the management determines is necessary to enable the preparation of annual accounts that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. ## _**Auditor's responsibility**_ Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the annual accounts. We conducted our review in accordance with the international standard on engagements to review historical annual accounts and additional requirements under Danish audit regulation. This standard requires us to conclude whether anything has come to our attention that causes us to believe that the annual accounts, taken as a whole, are not in all material respects in accordance with the applicable financial reporting framework. The standard also requires us to comply with relevant ethical requirements. A review of annual accounts performed in accordance with the international standard on engagements to review historical annual accounts is a limited assurance engagement. The review consists primarily of making inquiries of the management and, when appropriate, of others within the enterprise, applying analytical procedures, and evaluating the evidence obtained. The procedures performed in a review are substantially less than those performed in an audit conducted in accordance with international standards on auditing. Accordingly, we do not express an audit opinion on the annual accounts. ## _**Opinion**_ Based on our review, nothing has come to our attention which causes us to believe that the annual accounts do not provide a true and fair view of the company's assets, liabilities and financial position as of 31 December 2023 and of the results from its activities and for the financial year 1 January to 31 December 2023 in accordance with the Danish Financial Statements Act.
