ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2020
It is astonishing to see that last year’s WT Annual Report didn’t even mention Covid-19, much less anything about lockdown – of course, it was concocted in the January before we had any idea what would befall us. Crufts in March proved to be the last hurrah for the showing fraternity. Since then there have been no shows, difficulty about dog training classes, and horrible constrictions placed on the homing of puppies. People were lucky if they could leave their homes for dog walking once a day.
Before looking forward to the better things in store, let’s just chart what the Trust has been able to do in 2020. Clive writes that we rehomed 18 Ridgebacks during the year, 12 dogs and 6 bitches. The youngest was a 6-month-old whose owners thought should be euthanised because of its behaviour. The oldest were a pair of 11-year-old breeding bitches abandoned on the street, and four were in an advanced state of neglect. The most common reasons for surrender were financial and/or behavioural, and it would seem that ignorance of the size and liveliness of grown Ridgebacks is widespread among wouldbe owners. There’s a big job on education to be done. Please remember our motto
EVERYBODY DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE
The waiting list of would-be adopters at Rosehill has exploded to over 200 (previously round about 30), and we received 65 formal requests to surrender a dog. Luckily, reasonable and kindly advice enabled many of the original owners to keep their animals and avoided the great distress that accompanies cases of adoption. Best of all is when the Trust receives excited telephone calls from people who have taken on a Rescue, updating us with good news of a happy adoption.
The Trust is lucky in that much of its work is carried out at Rosehill Kennels and social distancing has meant Trustees have had to keep in touch by Zoom meetings. We look forward to resuming the happy personal meetings we have hitherto had with the rest of the RR world at their shows and AGMs. We are very pleased to say that Cath Davis, former Chairman of the RRC of GB, agreed to become one of our Trustees during the year and she and members of the other Breed Clubs join us in our regular meetings. Otherwise, we resume our tasks – Maggie and Clive i/c the care and rehoming of the Rescues, Rich advising people with difficulties, Tracy dealing with merchandise, Sheila looking after the social media, Mick helping with handling and training, Jenny the scribe, and above all Jan, our Founder Member, always available with encouragement and advice. We are always here.
Financially our figures are better than we feared a year ago. Our accounts are not yet audited (this account is being written in mid-March), but indicate income of £31,893.07 and expenditure of £21,432.99. The Breed Clubs continue to be most generous with fund-raising, and the public at large is very forthcoming with help, encouragement and contributions. We note however a drop in membership of the 100 Club and intend to boost knowledge and interest in this small lottery, the original brainchild of Doreen, the wife of our founder-member Norman Spence.
