CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Annual General Meeting – 23[rd] April 2025
One Year ago, Norton and Cuckney Village Hall was on the verge of closure. Thanks to the support of the community, the enthusiasm of a new group of trustees and grant funding, the future is much brighter.
Throughout the year, it has been a privilege to open the doors of the Village Hall, sharing each step of the process with everyone who has used the building. From the big clean up, to the repair of the roof and structure of the building, our DIY SOS event and now the full rewire, replacement of the heating system and lighting, the change in such a short period has been outstanding. Now our attention shifts to those doors, as we continue our work to provide a Village Hall that is back to being the heart of our community.
This work would not have been possible if it was not for our fundraising events and the use of the hall throughout the last year. This has proven, not only to us as a Charity, but also to grant funders, that this project is worth supporting and that the hall is a worthwhile investment. If it was not for Severn Trent, Bassetlaw District Council, the Co-Op, the Villages of Welbeck Association and the Parish Council, then we would not have been able to complete this work at such a great pace. We are all truly grateful and thankful for their support. I would personally like to thank Nancy for co-ordinating the Village Hall renovation projects and submitting such compelling grant applications.
I would also like to thank all the trustees, as well as the friends of the Village Hall. My report would be far too long if I listed all your contributions, but this past year would not have been possible without you all. My thanks also go to the team at Jac’s Café and the local community, who have been with us throughout, positively supporting us every step of the way.
Our work is not done and we turn to the future with a solid platform to build on. As well as the windows and doors, our next large projects are the toilets and the kitchen. We will also continue to shape the main hall so that it can accommodate whoever wishes to use and support the hall in the future.
I hope that the Village Hall can now welcome back groups who had to seek alternative venues during the winter months, as well as see new groups using the hall. Zumba, who have used the

hall even in the depths of winter, continue to use the hall every Tuesday evening and I hope they benefit from our continued refurbishments.
In summary, I could not be prouder of how everyone has pulled together over the last year. We all know there is still much that can be achieved, but I know that thanks to the generosity of the time, knowledge and funding given to the Village Hall by everyone involved, we can continue to reach our ambitious aims.
Conor Marples Chair of Trustees Norton and Cuckney Village Hall Charity No. 1041895
Norton Cuckney Village Hall Charity Report to the Annual General Meeting by the Honorary Treasurer
The charity has had a fantastic year as detailed in the reports from the Chair and secretary. I am pleased to report to the AGM that the financial status of the charity is now in its best position in several decades. Whilst the hall was in a moribund state the charity was running at an operating loss and using ever dwindling reserves to maintain this status. The activity from the new board of trustees must be commended for such a stark turnaround in the financial position of the charity. We enter this new financial year with a renewed confidence and vigour. The future of the charity and our beloved village hall is secure.
Income
We received a total income of £29,104.88 of grant funding of £21,199 (73%), £5,711 (21%) from fundraising eIorts with the remaining income from hall hire, the recycling bins and bank interest.
Expenditure
The hall has annual running costs of £3,779.13, utilities and insurance costs. It is expected that some of these costs will raise as we

have now an electric heating system and we expect to see increased activity within the hall. The Trustees will undertake to review energy usage and look to negotiate a competitive supply contract going forward. The annual insurance, whilst specialist in its nature, can also be put to competitive tendering.
Grant Funding
Special thanks must go to the charity Secretary Nancy Wright for her fantastic eIorts in securing the various tranches of external funding. We received £9,999.99 from the Severn Trent Community Fund, £4829.17 from Bassetlaw District Council and £4,908 from Nottinghamshire Community Energy Fund. As detailed in the other reports this funding has allowed the vital repairs to the Hall and especially the new heating and electrical systems.
Fundraising
The last year has proved extremely successful from a fundraising perspective with a grand total of £5,711.35 being raised by our fantastic volunteers. The fact this was achieved whilst the hall was in a state of redevelopment makes it even more remarkable and gives the charity the confidence to develop these endeavours further. The two quiz nights have proved extremely successful, combined they turned over £1,914.90. Our trustee Gemma Palmer took on the personal challenge of walking and climbing the Three Yorkshire Peaks and raised a fantastic £850, which enabled the hall the get some urgent guttering works completed. A big thank you also to the Tea Box Ladies who donated £460 plus contributed to the successful LMH Plant and Craft Fair which raised £1,249.
Banks
When the new trustees came on board last year the charity was using an account with the TSB bank, this was proving extremely diIicult to use with poor online services and a lack of local branches to make enquiries. The Trustees decided to look to move banking operations to the Unity Trust Bank, who specialise in charity and community enterprises, they have improved the banking experience, and their secure online banking facility is extremely eIicient.

The charity has also applied to the CCLA Bank (Churches, Charities and Local Authorities) to open an account, this will replace the account held by St Marys Church on the Charities behalf.

Independent Examiners Report to the Norton and Cuckney Village Hall Committee.
This Report on the accounts of the Norton and Cuckney Village Hall for the year ended 5[th] April 2025 is in respect of an examination carried out under s.43 of the Charities Act 1993.
As the member of the Norton and Cuckney Village Hall committee you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts; you consider that the audit requirements of section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993(The Act) do not apply. It is my responsibility to issue this report on those accounts in accordance with the terms of Regulation 7 of the Charities ( Accounts and Reports ) Regulations 1995.
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 43(7)(b) of the Act. That examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Norton and Cuckney Village Hall and a comparison of the accounts with those records. It also includes considering any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters.
The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
In connection with my examination no matter has come to my attention which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the Act and to which in my opinion attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
Peter V. Stanley
