2. OVERVIEW

OBJECTIVES:

The Dentons UK&ME LLP Charitable Trust is a registered charity, and its objects are set out in its governing document.

The trust seeks to provide assistance to smaller or less well-known charities that have a connection to our communities and practice areas, with a particular focus on small charities working to support the elderly, disabled, homelessness, offenders and their families, refugees, education and youth projects. The trust supports partners and staff taking part in official registered fund-raising activities for their own nominated charity. Donations are made at such time or times and in such manner and in such proportions as the Trustees shall from time to time and in their discretion determine in accordance with clause 4 of the Trust Deed dated 1st September 1994.

The trustees have had given due consideration to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit (PB2) when planning all events and determining how best to utilise funds raised.

STRUCTURE:

POLICY:

The Dentons UK&ME LLP Charitable Trust is a small charitable trust administered entirely within the firm Dentons UK and Middle East LLP.

The Trustees' policy is to supply grants to deserving charitable causes by reviewing the applications received before finally determining which grants are to be made. All manner of charitable causes are considered, with preference given to charities with whom there is some sort of special connection with Dentons UK and Middle East LLP or which are local to Dentons UK and Middle East LLP offices. The Trust also supports the fundraising efforts of individual members of staff.

Reserves. The income for the Trust derives from Dentons annually and the Trust does not generally enter long term commitments.

Risk. The Trustees have considered the major risks which impact the work of the Trust and consider that there are controls in place to mitigate their potential effect. All donations made from the trust are approved by the trustees beforehand.

Appointment and Election. Historically four UK partners have been appointed as trustees at any one time, with administrative support from the CSR Manager. An additional partner from Dentons' Dublin office has been appointed as the trust began making donations to small charities in Ireland with effect from 1 May 2021. The requirement to have the UK Managing Partner or Director as a trustee was dropped with effect from 1 May 2022

Induction and Training. The induction process for any newly appointed Trustee comprises a meeting with one of the existing Trustees and CSR Manager, followed by a meeting with the other Trustees.

REVIEW OF THE DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE CHARITY DURING THE YEAR:

During the past year the Dentons UK&ME LLP Charitable Trust received a large number of applications and made 114 grants amounting to £183,600 (2023: £149,450). Charitable grants ranged from £100 to £6,000. The additional expenditure was financed by gift aid income.

The standard donation increased to £2,000 with effect from 1 May 2023.

In order to support a wide number of causes, maximum annual donation levels have now been set and the details documented.

FINANCIAL POSITION OF THE CHARITY:

The Dentons UK&ME LLP Charitable Trust is funded by Dentons UK and Middle East LLP under the Gift Aid and Charitable Donations legislation. Funding is reviewed at each meeting of the Trustees.

The Trust had assets brought forward of £199,484. Income for the year was £186,148 and expenditure £185,190, leaving a year-end balance of £200,442.

NOTES:

The accounts have been prepared on the receipts and payments basis in accordance with the Charities SORP except where noted in the Statement of Assets and Liabilities.

We hereby approve the attached financial statements for the year ending 30th April 2024.

Signed on behalf of the Board of Trustees on 31 January 2025.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the 2011 Act; or 2. the accounts do not accord with those records

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

This report is made solely to the Charity's Trustees, as a body, in accordance with Part 4 of the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008. My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the Charity's Trustees those matters I am required to state to them in an independent examiner's report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the and the Charity's Trustees as a body, for my work or for this report.
