PRESIDENTS REPORT
Huge thanks to John Harrison for installing the new cladding
PRESIDENT
Pete Gaisford
The club successfully gained support from RGB Building Supplies for the provision of wood cladding. Upon removal of the old wood cladding, it became evident where water ingress was taking place. Perranporth club member and roofer Peter Walsh was able to remedy the cause and under the supervision of nipper dad and carpenter John Harrison the new cladding was installed during a period of dry weather. Some double-glazed windows have been replaced and the doors and locks serviced. The club building is in a healthy condition being situated in one of the most exposed positions on the coastline.
The beach is full of nippers learning new surf skills on a Thursday evening with the promise of a mug of hot chocolate at the end. The Youth section is thriving now that they know there is hot food and cake waiting for them at the end of their Tuesday evening training. The Senior section after an intense training session of a Wednesday evening discuss the merits of barbecuing halloumi.
In August 2024, nine Perranporth SLSC club members ventured to Australia to compete in the Lifesaving World Championships 2024 at Kurrawa Beach on the Gold Coast. Perranporth were represented in the Masters Board and Ski events by Matt Sanwell who gained 7th place in the board final for his age group. The club also entered a Female Masters surfboat crew who finished 4th place in their age category final. Congratulations to
club members Paula Bright, Kim Marie Jackson, Ruth Creamer, Tina Pascoe and Becky Jeffery for putting in the hard yards in training and for being a competitive surfboat crew racing against some of the very best Australian surfboat crews. The next Lifesaving World Championships are scheduled for Agadir, Morrocco in September 2026
The RNLI continue to provide the professional Lifeguard service for Perranporth Beach and Perran Sands. It should be noted that due to the adverse riptide beach conditions the RNLI Lifeguards performed 232 rescues in total, which is twice as many rescues as the figure recorded for 2023. Alongside the RNLI the life saving club continues with its core commitment to provide volunteer patrols from 6pm to 8pm on the beach during the peak summer weeks.
I have been the President of Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club since 2009 and there comes a point after 15yrs to retire from the role. I am pleased to record that Doreen Lawrence has accepted the role to be the President of Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club. Doreen has served the club selflessly over many years and is still a regular patrolling volunteer. In 2023 Doreen was recognised for her voluntary service at the BBC Cornwall - Make a Difference Awards. I wish Doreen well in her new role as President of Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club.

CHAIRS REPORT
CHAIR Doreen Lawrence
2024 has been a tough year for me personally, without the surfclub, my recovery after my back operation would have taken much longer! My desperation to get amongst it all back on the beach enabled me to officiate at Fistral for the Nationals and then in October for the IRB Champs in Exmouth - mission accomplished!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the Club that helped me through this tough time Thank you. (Becky, Spike, Annie, Sarah x2 and Ruth).
This is the last time I shall be doing a Chairmans Report because I have been asked to be President! What an honour! I have big boots to fill, Peter
(Ghastly) Gaisford thank you for your time in the role and I hope I can do as well as you.
I missed out on a Summer on the beach but am seeing you all at swimming on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Redruth and Truro. Hope more will come to the Tuesday group as there are spaces to be filled!

SECRETARYS REPORT
SECRETARY Nigel Bowden
As per usual, it has been another busy and productive year for the Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club, with 12 months of hard work and commitment from all our members. In my 22 years of being secretary, I have seen the club evolve and overcome countless challenges, but this year has certainly been a good one, with a renewed sense of energy and excitement throughout the club.
Listing every achievement over the past year would take too much time, so I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to every member who has given their time and effort to make the club such a wonderful place to be. Whether through training, volunteering, or supporting the various initiatives, each contribution makes a difference.
This year, we’ve seen some much-needed updates to the clubhouse. While much of this work had to be completed by contractors to ensure insurance and guarantees were in place, our members still stepped up and gave their time freely where possible. These improvements help secure the club’s future and ensure we continue to operate sustainably.
Our patrols continue to grow stronger each year, thanks to the dedication of our members. Covering the entire summer
holiday period, is something we can all be proud of. It serves as a reminder of the club’s core purpose, established so many years ago, and it’s wonderful to see our young volunteers developing their skills, with many hopefully going on to become professional lifeguards.
I was fortunate to have travelled to Australia this summer, and while there I was able to watch our Ladies Surf Boat team compete in the Lifesaving World Championships. It was a proud moment, and the team represented Perranporth with distinction on the world stage.
Financially, the club depends on membership subscriptions, grant funding, donations, and sponsorship to stay afloat. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who supports us in these areas. This remains an ongoing challenge, and looking ahead, we need to continue coming up with innovative ideas for fundraising and plan carefully for our future needs.
Once again, I would like to thank every member, volunteer, and supporter who has contributed to making this season such a positive and successful year for Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club. The vibe is back, and I’m confident we have many more great years ahead of us.

CAPTAINS REPORT
CAPTAIN Martijn Ronday
“Keep in mind, this report is crucial—it will be the only detailed record of what happened with PPSLSC in 2024 long after we’re gone!” – These words by Matt Sanwell motivate me to start writing even though it’s sunny, offshore and pumping! On a side note, do you know Matt was the longest serving Captain? Even longer than Simon Lawerence!
I find myself thinking of his quote. What crucial words do I want to be recorded in history? Will people even read this long after we’re gone? Does it even matter? In a way yes, it’s important to report what we’ve been up to, but in the grand scheme of things I don’t think the details will matter all that much. We keep detailed records in the Club library and with the help of AI it will be easy enough to get a summary of what happened in 2024 from crawling these documents and everything else that’s online.
What I think is much more important is to reflect on something that is intangible. Something that has more to do with the
culture of the club, the state of mind or perhaps the spirit of the times of 2024 and surrounding years.
In the beginning of the year, I wrote about ‘Ubuntu’, the ancient African saying that means “I am because we are” and that our Club can only exist if there is enough Ubuntu spirit. And for me it’s been something I’ve been looking at throughout the year.
I am happy to officially record for history that I see lots of Ubuntu in our Club! And I would also like to record, that this is all because of all of you, the Clubbies! It’s not something you might actively be trying to do or even ever have thought of, but Ubuntu is a natural effect when you give something of yourself to a larger whole.
And the best thing is, I see this still growing. I know many of you experience this as well and have described it as “momentum”. Yes, there is real Ubuntu growing in the Club at the moment!
You can see it during a Youth night, when even in the most challenging conditions you look out for each other and help your fellow Clubbie when needed.
Or when an off-duty coastguard member spots someone in trouble, and calls it in to the Clubbies on their voluntary patrol. You also see it in the way you support one of your own when they and their family are going through a tough time because of a lifethreatening illness.
But also, in moments of joy and support for someone who’s competing at the highest levels or on a Club Fun Day, and the list goes on and on.
In the end what it all boils down to is: people. So, to whomever reads this long after we’re gone, let it be noted, we have great people! In times where the world is becoming ever more individualistic, we are coming together, creating memories, experiences, and friendships for life whilst also having compassion for each other within the Club

and far beyond. Let’s keep this going and pass it on to future generations!

As a direct result from the survey, you will have also noticed throughout the year that we have had a longer beach season and that we have worked hard on having more social events, Club (fun) days, different types of focussed training sessions, and more structure across all areas of the Club.
From those involved in any form, there is no shortage of passion and commitment and I THANK YOU ALL!
If there ever is anything you want to get involved with, please reach out to any of the committee members or those people you know who are already involved in that area.
The Club needs us all to be involved, learning from each other, benefitting from your qualities and enthusiasm, sharing the planning and day-to-day doing load, and bringing new ideas and skills so that our community continues to evolve and thrive. We can always use your help!

PATROLS
PATROL CAPTAIN Tom McRitchie
As with previous years, we’ve had volunteers patrolling 6pm-8pm during the key holiday periods this year. Our main goal is to keep beach goers safe, offering advice, keeping an eye on the water, and stepping in when things get risky.
Our volunteer team continues to grow, with everyone bringing different sets of skills to the group. It is an excellent reminder of the depth of skill in our club.
Like every year, there were some hurdles:
Volunteer Availability: It’s always tricky making sure we’ve got enough volunteers available during peak periods.
Weather: Unpredictable conditions, especially with rough seas and strong winds, made some days harder to patrol.

Funding: We’re always looking for more support to keep up with equipment and training needs.
Next year’s goals:
Recruitment & Retention: We’ll be working on bringing in new volunteers and keeping our current team engaged with more training and recognition.
More Training: We would like to get more people through IRB courses and more first aid sessions to make sure we’re ready for anything.
Community Outreach: We’ll continue to expand our water safety programs in schools and local events to educate even more people about beach safety.
Fundraising: We’ll look into more fundraising events and partnerships to support our patrols and equipment needs.
Conclusion
It’s been a fantastic year for Perranporth Surf Lifesaving Club’s volunteer patrols. I’m incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication shown by everyone involved. We’re ready to take on next year’s challenges with continued community support.
Thanks to all the volunteers, the committee, and the wider community for their ongoing support.

NIPPER MANAGER
Spike Gaisford
Plenty of positives this year despite the lack lustre weather and the horrendous state of the beach at low tide.
Our amazing Nipper coaches have volunteered tirelessly on top of busy family & work responsibilities to share their own love of life saving at beach and pool sessions, passing on their knowledge inclusively to all our Nippers and parents and at the five Nipper events, encouraging any child who wants to give it a go. Resolutely, our 150 Nippers have continued to meet regardless of dreary
rain and wind, concerns over water quality and messy, rippy surf conditions. We have gone to the beach, got in the water and made the best of it, enjoying some dramatic moody sunsets whilst our young people show how hardy they truly are. They have also consistently swum throughout the winter until the sea warmed up and this shows in the improvement and resilience each and every one of them have shown as the year passes by.
The Club welcomed a large group of new 7s and their parents into the Nipper family
with Pete putting them through their paces each week and we are really pleased to see them at Saturday swimming where we are grateful to the wonderful Samantha Jane for her fantastic professional swim teaching of this group and guidance to their new parent helpers (future coaches). We have helped several of our older NipperYouth (13+) members achieve their Bronze DofE awards through volunteering at our sessions. Our weekend beach focused fitness and technique sessions led this year by Coaches Anita Fleet and Mel Munialo continued for any Age 8-13yr Nipper wanting to improve and enter

The Max Hocking Nipper Fun Day again
at Hayle, had 47 Perranporth Nippers join over 500 children from across Cornwall at this relaxed Cornish gettogether.
Cornwall Region events
Early in March, 74 Nippers, our biggest ever pool entry, placed 5th Club in the SLS Cornwall Frostbite at Penzance pool following outstanding performances across all age groups.
At the Cornish Ocean Champs, in a tough Holywell Bay, 51 children ensured we were again 5th Club overall. Plenty of medals, finals and top 8s at both local events were achieved because all the children showed up with courage and determination A serious amount of fun was had to top it off. Well done to those Nippers who raced for the first time this year.
National Events
Once again to Cardiff 50m pool at the end of March for the SLSGB National Nipper Pool Champs. 45 children swam, paddled and towed their hearts out, making us 10th Club out of 29 with several medals and lots of top 20 placings. Big up to Elsie our only 8yr girl who had to step up with the big girls to make up the relays. The best bit? The camaraderie, the fun, the friendship, the challenge and the sweets!
The SLSGB National Ocean Champs were again held at Branksome Chine, Dorset in August. A fun, unusually hot

Big thank you parents for signing your children up to all the events, getting them there on time and cheering them on. A huge thank you to Lead Coach Anita for overseeing the teams, our parent coaches/age managers responsible for managing and moving children and kit to marshalling and timing and all of the parents who stepped up to event help on the beach, in the sea or at the pool. A massive shout out to Biz our SLS official “Official” and also Katherine Turnbull who was thrown in at the deep end when she stepped up to help official for the first time at Holywell.
Social events
and sunny few days at the beach and camping together for the 28 children who represented the Club. We were a respectable 10th out of 27 clubs with several gold, silver and bronze medals, many finals made and top 16 placings. Our mighty 13’s girls scored an amazing hat-trick in their very last Ocean Nipper comp taking Gold in all three team relays: Taplin, Board and
Beach. It was a great trip away not only from a sporting perspective but from the social memories made by everyone. For our Nipper medallists and point takers, please check out the sports report at the back. There are too many to list here, but our Nippers shone bright with plenty of medals following hard won battles in the pool, sea and on the sand. Well done to them all.
Katharine, Becky Pope and Anita with huge help from James, Stephanie, Sarah, Rachael with Coastal Roots were central to organising the September Club Fun Day which despite the grey weather was a great success raising over £1000 towards Club funds. We held a couple of high-tide Nipper BBQs which also helped towards club funds. Nipper parents Charlotte Viles, Ben Rowswell

and Simon Lawrence helped pulled off a cracker of a Club float with Ruth Ashwin for this year’s Carnival and our Nippers and parents fully embraced the blue “Wave Warriors” theme with amazing costumes and make up. Charlotte, with fellow parent Lou Thrower and senior members Maxine, Vicky and Dave as part of the Saltwater Collective, held a 2nd Christmas fundraising art exhibition with a share of the proceeds going to the Club. New Nipper Mum Alex Enston-Grace hosted a lovely Christmas decoration making workshop at the Clubhouse with the Nippers for our yearly entry to the St Piran’s Christmas Tree Festival, they looked amazing on our tree, and we will have another workshop on December 17th for this year’s effort.
Future plans
The Club is aiming to host our Youth Aquathon (& world-famous Triathlon) in September 2025. Please speak to Mel Munialo if you would like to help her organise this Perranporth based SLS accredited Nipper & Youth event. Events like these raise vital funds for the Club but it takes more than a handful of people to do this, you all have useful skills that can help us as a club team make these a
success, what can you bring to the party?
Thank you’s
I cannot thank enough the following parent members who come back week after week and who have taken the time to pass SLSGB Lifeguard and Coaching awards to become our valuable Coaches: Anita Fleet, Annie Lee, Adrian Richards, Amy Jones, Amy Vian, Andy Byatt, Becky Pope, Cris Ballinger, Gemma Teague, Holly Byatt, Kate Passmore, Margh Brewer, Martin Fleet, Mat Rowlands, Mel Munialo, Mike Jeffs, Rob Attridge, Sarah Green, Simon Boyle, Steve Iliffe and also, our current coach support team in the pool and on the beach:
Adam Burnett, Aaron Hutchens, Charlotte Viles, Dan Smith, Dave Halford, James Bemrose, John Harrison, Katharine Cunniffe, Katy Kershaw, Lucy Bolsin, Luke Bolsin, Lucy Thorn, Mark Kershaw, Remy Whiting, Samantha Jane I am eternally grateful to Biz Iliffe and Anita for their help behind the scenes with admin and practical support over many years.
That’s a wrap
This is my last report, after 22 brilliant years involved with managing Nippers, I am handing the reins over to the lovely Mel Munialo and a Nipper organising team she will head up. I will still manage the new 7s each year with Pete, coaching new parents, our youth and ladies and will stay as the Club Safeguarding Officer. It’s been an absolute pleasure watching and helping so many young people of our community grow into such safe, resilient, helpful and fine young people as they head off into the world. Surf Club really is the best place to grow up. Parents you should be very proud of your Nippers and thank you for your commitment to our team and our Club. If you want to help make Nippers even better by taking your lifeguard, first aid and/or coach award, then let me know and we can make it happen.

YOUTH MANAGER
Sarah White
successfully in the Cornish Frostbite Competition, this led nicely onto the National Pool Champs in April held at Cardiff, where we came a very respectful 11th.
Another successful year has flown by. We started the New Year with our biggest influx of Youth from Nippers for a very long time. Our current numbers stand at 71 Youth. It has been great to see the majority of them attending on a weekly basis, we even had new members join us in the older age groups, all of which is improving the dynamics of the group.
We then entered the beach season returning to the beach on the 7th May, we swung straight into training for the Youth Champs in July, again we entered a strong team of 23, this time we came 6th overall with a fantastic medal haul, 6 gold, 9 silver and 6 bronze and then SLSGB National Surf Champs at Branksome Chine coming away in an awesome 12th place with 1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze,
We have also created a new Young Senior age group 20 to 25 and we have 25 members.
Entering 2024 swimming continued at a pace, with 13 of our Youth competing

thank to everyone who entered and all the parents and coaches who supported.
It was great to see many of our Youth take part in the Twilight sessions and also the Rock up and Race events held at Gylly, giving everyone the opportunity to practise in race conditions in a fun way.
With our return to the beach we started each session with a warm up and yoga and often a discussion on the conditions, encouraging the Youth to undertake their own risk assessment, giving them the knowledge so when they enter the sea outside of an organised session they can recognise the dangers and keep themselves and others safe.
All Youth were issued with earplugs at the beginning of the summer season and are encouraged to wear them on a weekly basis.
Board sessions are still a huge favourite amongst the youth, although this year we have had a dedicated swimming group which has improved week on week and has seen them swim out through some very challenging conditions.
Ski paddling has continued on the river at Malpas with many of our new Youth really getting to grips with it and even competing at Cornish Champs and coming away with medals. On calmer evenings we have even managed to get the skis out at Perranporth. Training will continue through the winter, it is also great to see so many parents getting involved and even having ago.
Jayne Chapman and Andy Lee who assisted 5 members of the public who got into difficulty whilst in the surf, it was then reported that one of their group was missing, a search was conducted we were then informed that the missing person had returned home both of these are great examples of our Youth and Coaches upholding the clubs ethos of Vigilance and Service.
A huge thank you needs to go out to all our Youth Coaches who give up their time on a weekly basis and many of which no longer have Youth attending, you are all incredible and make the running of the Youth section so easy.
Special mention must go to Ruth and Alex who are always busy behind the scenes cooking up a storm, this takes immense planning especially as in the height of the summer they were catering for 60 people. Youth food this year has raised £2,500, we have spent £500 on an adjustable ski and our aim is to use the remaining as match funding to buy new equipment that will benefit everybody especially the Youth.
Finally I would like to thank all the Youth who rock up each week, help and support each other, attend training, clear up and are very respectful, they are a credit to you and I very much look forward
to seeing where they are heading next season. We hope to bring some new and exciting opportunities for the older Youth next year, watch this space.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the Youth Section.
We continued to support the Club Patrols on a Tuesday evening special mention must go to Cory for rescuing a fellow Youth who lost their board in the surf and Cory seeing what happened calmly bought them safely to shore to retrieve their board also to Molly Kerry,

LADIES REPORT
LADIES CAPTAIN Anita Fleet
2024 has been another successful
year for Perranporth Surf Lifesaving Club. The club has continued to build on the success of previous years and, once again, has welcomed many new ladies to our thriving club.
As the Ladies Captain of the surf club, my role has evolved into a fulfilling blend of supporting our Nippers and youth and overseeing ladies’ night. It has been inspiring to watch our female members thrive across all areas of the club.
The incredible Ellie Woodard took the helm and ran the ladies’ nights this year
along with the wonderful skilled and dedicated instructors, known as the ‘blues’. All the instructors have been amazing and I cannot thank you all enough for your precious time, valuable knowledge and on-going support. Ellie’s dedication, energy, and expertise have inspired many, empowering them to advance their life-saving skills whilst having fun—bringing a fresh and exciting approach to ladies’ nights.
Weekly beach running sessions were a tremendous success this year, bringing together many members from various sections of the club to train for beach
events and get ready for the upcoming season. This is an area we would like to continue with next year.
Competitions
Competitions are an area we are looking to build on for next year in the hope that we can take a strong team to both Cornish and National Champs. Paula Bright joined forced with the men to form a small but formidable team for the SLSC Cornish Frostbite Champs. Congratulations to Paula who won a gold medal in the manikin carry (with fins). We had a promising start at the first Twilight Series at Hayle with Perranporth

LADIES REPORT
A few words from Ellie Woodward:
SLSC ladies dominating the start line. We were able to enter multiple Taplin teams at this event which was wonderful to see. These events provide a fun and inclusive opportunity for competitors and are open to everyone.
For a multitude of reasons, the number of ladies who competed at Cornish Champs this year was very low. Congratulations to Sarah Green for going solo and bringing home the gold medal in the 1km run!
This year, Gilly SLSC launched fortnightly “Rock up and Race” events. Throughout the season, several women participated, getting a taste of competition and the opportunity to test their skills.
Our club Fun Day was a huge success and saw so many club members coming together to race, have fun and enjoy our wonderful club. A huge thank you to Becky Pope and Katharine Turnball for coming up with the idea and organising such a fun packed day.
A special shout out to Biz Iliffe, who has dedicated many weekends this year to officiating for our club. It’s a role she thoroughly enjoys, and her commitment and passion should be commended.
Congratulations to our incredible ladies’ surf boat crew (Paula Bright, Ruth Creamer, Tina Pascoe, Kim-Marie Jackson and Rebecca Jeffery), who trained tirelessly in preparation for the Life Saving World Championships in Australia. We were all captivated by their journey and immensely proud of their achievements. As well as holding their own against the Aussies, they brought home a well-deserved silver medal in the international race against teams from France and South Africa.
Carnival
As always, the ladies’ enthusiasm and excitement for the carnival was evident to all who watched! They eagerly embraced the opportunity, along with other sections of the club, to dance, have a memorable time and represent our wonderful club. Thank you to Biz and Lauryn Iliffe for choreographing and leading the dance routine and to Charlotte Viles and Ruth Ashwin for their amazing artistic talents in decorating the float.
The dedication and commitment
shown by so many members is truly inspiring. Thanks to everyone whose exceptional efforts have contributed to the club’s success Our club wouldn’t be the vibrant, thriving club it is without each of you. Here’s to an amazing 2025!
We have continued to run Friday night sessions for our women, and although numbers have dropped slightly this year, there is a committed bunch dedicated to showing up and having fun! With a growing number of women coaches available we’ve been able to run weekly sessions. Despite the changeable weather, big swells and rips all over the place (good for resistance training!), we’ve managed to do a variety of training sessions including a few expeditions to the south coast at Gyllynvase and Maenporth for a change of scene and tranquil water. There has been a good showing at some of the Twilight events and the Rock Up and Race nights, a few for the very first time who haven’t been put off!
Winter swimming has clearly paid off as the group are stronger in the sea than ever before, enjoying some longer swims and taking on the waves with ease. Board paddling has been brilliant, even with some epic wipeouts enthusiasm remains high, plus fun and games and some great wave riding, technique has improved and confidence is high.
Like all groups, we adapt to the conditions each week and it feels like there have been more big onshore difficult evenings than normal, but we haven’t been deterred, always heading in on swell boards, bellyboards or for a good old-fashioned body whomp. Postsession socialising has been a highlight with cheese boards, most outlandish crisp flavours and some one-pot wonders, we know how to live!
Another fun season of increasing water time, pushing our comfort zones, building confidence and improving skills, we definitely have a few more ready to take on lifesaver qualifications and add to the pool of coaches.
Massive thank you to all the ladies who have made it happen this year.

IRB CAPTAIN
Rob Farr

This year saw a big IRB training group. Some completely new to it, and others continuing on to gain their qualifications.
The evening sessions kicked off with a remarkably calm flat few weeks which allowed us to do some coastal exploring. A memorable evening was had out at the Cow and Calf (Bawden Rocks) where we were able to practically show to the crews what a tidal stream looked like. That awareness was gained by getting them all into the water and seeing how quick it took them to float through the big gap between the two rocks. The boats and their crews have again been an essential part in allowing numerous local and national events to happen. The Truro Half, Wales surf boat racing, Club FunDay, and the September SLS Open Nationals.
The training year continued with the usual range of surf conditions that we get at Perran. Forever conscious that our surf conditions could easily lead to a boat capsize means we ask crews to hold the Surf Life Saver, Beach Lifeguard or Surf Lifeguard. This ensures crews can look after themselves in the surf out the back, and make it back to shore under their own steam.
Congratulations to new IRB crew Ben, Matt, Lois, and to new IRB drivers Aisling and Paul. Thanks also to Simon Jeffery for all the coaching help again.
If you want to be a part of the water cover to allow events to happen, then please contact me so we can get you onto the next Perran IRB course. rob.farr@perranporthslsc.org.uk

SURFBOAT CAPTAIN Paula Bright
What a year it’s been for the
Perranporth Boaties. There have been 3 UK Surf Rowers League events held. : Perranporth hosted the July event and there was an excellent turnout and even more excellent waves and fair weather. There is a refreshed buzz for this niche sport and the enthusiasm is evidenced by the appointment of two of our members, Kim-Marie Jackson and Kenny Croft, as Chair Person and Development Lead respectively, in the UKSRL Committee. More structured learning progression for both rowers and sweeps is on the cards in 2025 in addition to another event to be hosted by Perranporth!
Our men’s crew took a trip to Biarritz to compete with our French chums. Sadly, despite perfect waves the event was thwarted by sewage pollution (it’s happening everywhere). By all accounts, they celebrated like champions anyway and did some token river races.
This August, myself Paula Bright, Ruth Creamer, Tina Pascoe, Becky Jeffery, Kim-Marie Jackson, and sweep Peter Gaisford made the commitment to train and prepare for the Surf Life Saving World Championships on the Gold Coast in Australia. Kurrawa Beach is renowned for its powerful surf, double banks and dumping shore break. Preparing

SURFBOAT REPORT
for this endeavor meant 10 months of strength training, ergo sets, dawn rows, psychological preparation, teamwork and financial commitment.
Noosa Heads SLSC were kind enough to host us for a week before the event and let us acclimatise using their fantastic club and boat. We were blown away by the size and numbers at the actual World’s competition which was impeccably hosted. In our masters age category we held our own through the heats and made it to the final. It was a photo finish for 2nd, 3rd and 4th on the line and we were 4th. We’d all given it everything we had and only some additional Aussie race experience could have seen us do any better. The open event was in slightly tougher conditions against younger legs. Suffice to say we enjoyed our heats and everyone remained in one piece! The organisers rightly saw fit to run an ‘International Entry’ race on the last day. So we got our bling in the end coming 2nd to the South African team.
This incredible experience once lived outside our comfort zone, but now... it doesn’t. The thrill, sense of achievement and personal development that comes from pushing yourself beyond perceived limits is something I’d encourage everybody to do at some point. The beauty of a club like Perranporth, is that there is opportunity and encouragement for all of its members to do this, regardless of age or ability. So get involved and set yourself a challenge, you won’t regret it!

Celebrating 50 years since the first UK surfboat entry in the world champs
----- End of picture text -----
Whilst on his travels in Oz, Pete collected a new commissioned ‘Boatie of the year’ trophy from his old friend and fellow Sweep, Mike King. It’s a gorgeous piece made from cedar, like the original boats. All the historical names have been engraved (see p19) and it supersedes many previous yard of ale trophy’s which didn’t stand the test of time. I’m very proud to be custodian of this trophy for the rest 2024.
On this note, special kudos is due to our exiting Club President and Boat Sweep, Peter Gaisford. Pete is living proof that when you put in time and effort you can achieve incredible things. We’ve been blown away by his fitness transformation through this journey. At 70 years old, the strength, balance and agility to surf doesn’t come for free anymore. Pete had put his surfing hobby to bed a couple of years ago but to quote him this summer “if nothing else, this was all worth it to be able to surf again, I think my hair is thicker too!”.
Thank you to our sponsors and key supporters this year:
Be inspired people. Age is just a number. Thanks for everything Pete, from the Perranporth Piskies.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT
MEMBERSHIP Matt Sanwell
2024 saw PPSLSC breach 500 members for the first time! This I believe is testament to how inclusive, fun and engaging our club is. The introduction of our reduced rate for 19-25yr old young seniors has gone down well with 26 people taking advantage of it.
For 2025 the committee has voted a modest increase in membership fees of approximately 2% (between the current CPI and RPI rates) which effectively means fees are costing the same in real terms. This still needs to be voted in at the AGM.
Our membership platform: The Club Membership Cloud is undergoing extensive development which will bring a wealth of communication options including push notifications for groups to enable a less fragmented and more open approach to club communication. This will be launched in February along with some powerful session management and risk assessment tools.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss paying monthly, please contact Matt Sanwell (Membership Secretary) on matt.sanwell@perranporthslsc.org.uk

TREASURER Tim Keohane
We have had another storming year. One where we faced really difficult decisions and rising costs, but we faced them and found ways to meet them. With the support of our membership, we have been able to get back to investing in our future as a club. New kit is on its way!
But it couldn’t have been done without the hard work of a number of people.
Another special mention needs to go to our Nippers and Youth, who continue to raise huge amounts of money just feeding themselves after a beach session! They’re a growing bunch.
We have had some brilliant volunteers to help with our building fabrics, all of the new cladding was donated and put on for free again by a few able and willing individuals!
In the coming year we will focus on securing more funding and investing in our club kit. We will instigate a programme of review and renewal to assure we maintain safe and fun to use kit. Moving away from boom and bust spending to a controlled approach. We have already secured the Coop for another year, and we are looking for support from you all to find other ways to raise funds to support our club.
We could do so much more, we need your support and help. The efforts of a few are supporting the many, imagine what we could do if we engaged the many!

Note: The results program experienced a corruption, and SLS Cornwall have done their best to reconstruct and verify
the results. While every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, please note that some results may still contain minor discrepancies.
Perranporth Nippers Team
Sport has always been an integral part of Perranporth SLSC, shaping the club’s identity and fostering a strong sense of community. In addition to the coaches, we would like to extend a special thank you to our officials who represented us at both the Cornish and National events. Their role is essential to the fair and successful management of competitions, ensuring that our club and all participants have a positive, well-organized experience.
It’s important to remember that SLSGB (Surf Life Saving Great Britain) sport relies heavily on team participation, as larger teams statistically increase the chance of overall success. Surf lifesaving stands apart as a sport where individual athletes can truly excel, but only with the backing and collaboration of their teammates. This unique balance of individual performance and collective support defines the essence of our sport, where each competitor’s success contributes to the triumph of the whole club.
The following results display the points allocated to athletes based on their performances in both the Cornish and National events. For the Cornish competitions, points have been awarded to the top 8 finishers in each category and in the National events, points are allocated to the top 16 competitors in each category.
This points system aims to reward consistency and excellence, allowing athletes to accumulate scores based on their placement. These scores contribute to individual rankings and help determine overall team standings, highlighting both personal achievements and collective team success.
