A new roof covering and the addition of solar PV to help reduce our energy consumption
PRESIDENT
Pete Gaisford
----- End of picture text -----

The Perranporth Surf Lifesaving Club continues to grow in membership numbers and to be at the forefront of reducing its Carbon footprint.

Thank you to club member Magnus Hamilton of OnShore Solar for all his advice and technical support with this Green Energy project.

There is a long waiting list for the Nipper membership and as they grow the Youth section is also increasing in membership numbers. You will see from the AGM Reports that the Nipper and Youth membership have performed particularly well in both Pool and Beach competitions in 2023. Well done to all the coaches and parents for giving your time to help the Nipper and Youth sections to medal success.

In 2015 the club secured the sponsorship of Happy Energy for the installation of a Solar Thermal water heating system. During the winter of 2022 the club presented a very successful Crowdfunding proposal across social media platforms for the purchase of a PV solar panel array. In September 2023 OnShore Solar provided and fitted the PV solar array alongside Truro Heating and Plumbing Ltd. This PV solar array and solar thermal water heating system has superseded the bottled gas boiler system.

The RNLI continue to provide the professional Lifeguard service for Perranporth Beach and Perran Sands. It was noted alongside the usual Perranporth faces that there were more female lifeguards patrolling Perranporth Beach in 2023. The RNLI Lifeguards performed 113 Rescues and recorded 679 incidents in total. Perranporth SLSC supports the professional lifeguard service with the provision of trained and qualified new recruits for the RNLI Lifeguard system. The Club has a core commitment to provide volunteer patrols on the beach outside the normal lifeguard hours during the peak summer weeks from 6pm to 8pm.

One of those regular patrolling volunteers is Perranporth SLSC Chair – Doreen Lawrence. Doreen has recently been recognised for her voluntary service at the BBC Cornwall - Make a Difference Awards. The awards ceremony took place in Truro Cathedral, congratulations Doreen upon your Highly Commended Volunteer Award

CHAIRS REPORT

CHAIR Doreen Lawrence

A year has passed since the last report, and time has flown by! I find myself in a rather unusual situation as I’m writing this report by hand due to a power outage during storm Ciaran. With limited options, I’ve decided to embrace the old-school approach.

new roof and the addition of a new water tank. We’ve also had to re-evaluate our insurance coverage, which has seen a significant increase. It’s evident that fundraising is essential for our club’s financial sustainability.

I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the committee for their tireless dedication and countless hours spent managing the club. Without their efforts, we would not have made the progress we have.

During the past year, I attended the Stillwater event in Wales, the national championships in Dorset, and the open competition at Portreath. I genuinely enjoy participating in these events, especially when our fellow clubs are involved.

Finally, I want to extend my appreciation to each and every one of you for supporting the Perranporth Surf Lifesaving Club. Your support is invaluable, and without it, we would be nothing. With warm regards, Dx

As you may be aware, our fees have increased this year. This rise in costs is a result of several necessary upgrades and improvements to the club, including fire safety regulations, a

P.S. I’d like to thank you all for attending my 80th birthday party, and I’d like to offer a special thank you to the youth for the thoughtful and engraved gold whistle!

CAPTAINS REPORT

CAPTAIN Tom McRitchie

Throughout the season, committee members, Patrol volunteers and coaches have worked hard behind the scenes on a variety of important projects and activities, with a real sense of community spirit emerging.

This is hugely significant for a club like ours and while we have a great membership, you can never have enough resource to fulfil the many tasks that are required to run a Surf Lifesaving Club. I would like to thank everyone involved for giving up their time during this year and I’m confident that ethos will continue into 2024 with the ‘can do’ culture that has undoubtedly developed.

Due to taking on roles with Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service and Surf lifesaving Cornwall, unfortunately I feel I cannot give the role of captain the full amount of energy it deserves. However, Martijn will be a worthy replacement I will endeavour to help him where possible, and I wish him well for the future.

Patrol Co-ordinator Report

Year on year, we are slowly evolving the patrol section of our club to suit the needs of the beach and the people who use it. In our 5th year of HM Coastguard declared patrols, it was time to cover more of the various school holidays. Last year out 6-8 patrols were solely organised over the 6 weeks of the summer holidays. This year we covered 16 days in the easter holidays, 9 days in the may half term and then the normal 6 weeks of

the summer holidays. Volunteers have racked up some brilliant statistics this year:

----- Start of picture text -----
Total Volunteer hours 678 (2022=352.5)
Preventative Actions 68
Incidents 6 (2022=4)
Minor Injuries 13 (2022=19)
Major Injuries 2 (2022=1)
----- End of picture text -----

These stats and reports are proof that our supplementary patrols after the RNLI have finished for the day are having a positive effect on the safety of the locals and visitors to our beach. I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone that stepped up this year to help put these patrols on. Without the “boots on the ground”, this safety cover simply wouldn’t be possible.

Next year’s plans are already in motion and information will be going out in the new year. If you are interested in getting involved, please drop me an email (tom.mcritchie@ perranporthslsc.org.uk). I’ll be looking to qualify more people in the IRB in my new role as regional IRB officer so that the IRB can be made available as an asset to the coastguard more often. Anyone over the age of 14 is welcome to come to patrols, whether you’re qualified or not. Training can be provided to those wanting to gain qualifications.

SECRETARYS REPORT

SECRETARY Nigel Bowden

As per normal 2023 has been another busy year for the Perranporth Surf Lifesaving Club, with another 12 months of hard work and commitment. In my mind to list all the achievements over the year would just take too much time, so I would like to thank all the members of the club for all their time making the club such a great place to be.

This year, we have seen some much-needed updates to the clubhouse with the fitting of the new Solar Panels and the updating of the electrics. Now a lot of the work must be done by contractor so we have the insurance and guarantees, but our members still gave their time freely where they could help.

The summer started so well with one of the best June and July we had in a long time. Everyone was keen to train and just happy being around the club, everyone was looking forward to the competition and their place in the teams. Then came the start of the competition in August, and how did the weather and surf change. With the Nippers at Holywell Bay being the first to be blown out, then the Youth at Polzeath and finally the Open and Master’s at Bude. There was a lot of rain and wind but everyone made the most of being together and when we did race, we had some very good results.

Our Patrols are going from strength to strength, and this is down to the commitment of our members. Covering the whole summer holiday period is something we need to be proud of and shows what the club was first established for all those years ago. Hopefully we will see a lot, of our young volunteers go on and become professional Lifeguards.

Perranporth Surf Lifesaving Club depends on membership subscriptions, grant funding, donations and sponsorship to keep the club financially afloat and we are indebted to all those who support the club. This is an endless task and moving forward we must support and come up with more ideas for fundraising and we must plan to our future requirements.

In total 34 members of our club have now completed either their full lifeguard training or re qualification in 2023.

17 of our members passed their full life guard course. 12 of them were our inspiring youth who will hopefully go on to work on our local beaches implementing their lifesaving skills. A further 17 of our members completed their re qualification. 5 of these lifeguarded full time in Perranporth and Newquay.

NIPPERS REPORT

NIPPER MANAGER Spike Gaisford

One name, Jayne Chapman.

Our deepest thanks go to Nipper Coach Jayne who has completed her time with Nippers, 11 years to be precise. Through those years she has embraced the Club’s Nipper ethos, nurturing, in her amazing and fair style, not only each child in her various beach and pool groups but all of the hundreds of children in those eleven years who have committed to representing the Perranporth Nipper team at Cornish and National events. I for one am eternally grateful that Jayne stepped up and shared with me the “behind the scenes” load which managing Nippers creates. She hasn’t gone far, moving on to coach our Youth section with her warm smile and calm manner, encouraging all abilities, coaxing confidence in each child, giving everyone a chance. Thank you so very much Jayne.

2023 has been busy for our 145 children aged 7-13. The beach has been buzzing, the pool sessions splashtastic. It’s fantastic to see the weekly enthusiasm. A full group of new 7s and parents joined Pete’s initiation into Nippers and surf club life; all finished the summer oozing sea confidence and definitely a little bit fitter. Coach Andy Davies did a fabulous job of arranging extra 50m pool sessions as well as continuing his Sunday summer beach sessions, focusing on fitness and race technique for any 8+ Nipper wanting to improve and enter the regional and national events this year. Along with Event Team managers Jayne, Anita, Mel and Annie, he has helped shape a Perranporth squad who have again excelled at all events. Biz Iliffe fortunately stepped up and took her SLSGB Officials Award and became our Club ‘Official’ at events this year. We cannot enter events unless we provide people like Biz and events do not happen at all without these volunteers. Could you do this for us too?

NIPPERS REPORT

Cornwall Region events

In the pool, Perranporth finished 4th with a whopping 64 children racing at the SLS Cornwall Frostbite at Penzance in March. It was a great feeling having 50% of our 8-13s at this event, thank you parents for signing your children up, getting them there, cheering them on and helping with timing and marshalling. On the beach in July, the Cornish Nipper Champs were held at Holywell Bay and Team Perranporth placed 3rd Club. There were outstanding performances across the board from all 57 Nippers who attended with really tight racing at an unforgiving venue. The Max Hocking Nipper Fun Day was a brilliant success at Hayle, with 52 children joining in with Nippers from across Cornwall.

National Events

Wales – Cardiff’s 50m pool again hosted the SLSGB National Nipper Pool Champs at the end of April with 37 Nippers making the journey. We were 5th overall. The children were incredible

as were the parents who helped with the team and the lane timing. On the beach the SLSGB National Ocean Champs were again held at Branksome Chine, Dorset in August with tricky racing conditions this year. An admirable 5th Club overall belied some fantastic results from the 35 children who made up the team. It was a great trip away not only from a sporting perspective but from the social memories made by everyone. For our Nipper medallists and point takers please check out the sports report at the back. There are too many to list here, but our Nippers shone bright with plenty of medals following hard won battles in the water and on the sand. Well done to them all. This year you may also have seen several of our Nippers starring in the CBeebies show “Treasure Tales” filmed at the Club. Bea Cudmore and Biz were instrumental in putting together our fantastic first Nipper Halloween party which was well attended by families, was a spooky success and which we want to repeat every year. Collective, held a fundraising art exhibition with proceeds going to the Club. Anita Fleet did a superb job with her Christmas Gonk making workshop with the children for our yearly entry to the St Piran’s Christmas Tree Festival, they looked amazing.

We did not hold the Youth Aquathon this year, a case of the organising team feeling a little burnt out to say the least and if anyone reading this would like to help organise future Nipper events please do come forward, we need fresh ideas and willing victims! Events like these raise funds for the Club but it takes more than a handful of people to do this. If anyone has any bright ideas, please do get in touch with me. I cannot thank enough those parent members who have taken the time to

pass SLSGB awards to become our valuable Coaches, your children’s coaches and who keep coming back week after week to share the surf lifesaving love and knowledge. To the parent register takers, the event helpers, water cover at events, cake bakers, the BBQ flippers you all make Nippers happen wherever we are. And big love to Karen and Ruth the all-important hot chocolates Queens. I am eternally grateful to Biz Iliffe who has come forward to help me with managing Nippers behind the scenes, it is a mammoth task. Thank You and bring on 2024!

2022 YOUTH AWARDS

Last winter the Youth continued their swim training at a pace both at Redruth School and Sir Ben Ainsley Centre, a big thanks to Keith Lambert for his continued support, this winter we have been joined by Andy Davies who is developing competition technique which complements both the Lifesaver qualifications and the competitions alongside Keith’s swim technique, great feedback on all swimmers from both coaches.

We hit the beach early this summer making the most of the summer light, we were very fortunate that we were

able to train at Perranporth every week without fail and also utilise surrounding beaches for some competition training, this certainly paid off at both County and National competitions.

Our beach training continued and our Lifesaver/Lifeguard training on a Monday night was hugely successful a huge thank you to both Becky Jeffery and Tom McRitchie for their commitment in getting our Youth through this award it is great to see our Youth members holding up the clubs motto of ‘Vigilance and Service’.

been hugely successful this year and well attended, this is testament to our wonderful coaches who give up their Tuesday evenings and provide such amazing support and encouragement. All our Youth successfully completed their Swim, Board and Tube Rescue Awards.

Thank you to Ruth and Alex who have kept us all fed and watered with such amazing meals every Tuesday night, our socials after some hard training have gone from strength to strength and it is great to see everyone coming together we have also reinstated Club Notices giving all members of Youth a chance to deliver them. A special thank you to Doreen for keeping us all in line ensuring we are all registered, have the correct attire (remember your hat, goggles and ear plugs) and revised your theory, you are truly one of a kind Doreen and we love you for it.

This year we have bought all our Youth ear plugs and we are encouraging them to use them every week and outside of Surfclub sessions, we see them as a vital part of their kit when entering the sea and hopefully we can be proactive in preventing Surfers ear, we will be issuing all new Youth with earplugs at the beginning of each season when we return to the beach in the future.

The Youth have really stepped up this year and supported the Club Patrol sessions over the summer period outside of the Lifeguard hours, putting to good use their skills acquired during their training sessions.

A huge thank you has to go to everyone in the club who supports the Youth, from parents ferrying the Youth to training and competitions, towing trailers, coaching whether in the pool, in the sea on dry land, registering, BBQing, cooking, cleaning down, administration you are all awesome and we couldn’t do it without you.

LADIES REPORT

LADIES CAPTAIN Anita Fleet

2023 has been another successful year for Perranporth Surf Lifesaving Club. The club has continued to build on the success of previous years and, once again, has welcomed many new ladies to our thriving club.

During the summer months, the skilled and dedicated instructors, known as the ‘blues’, ran fortnightly lifesaving training sessions, coinciding with the high tides. The primary objective for these sessions was to enhance water confidence among our members whilst also providing a challenge for our more skilled surf club participants. All the instructors have been amazing and I cannot thank you all enough for your precious time, valuable knowledge and on-going support. A special thank you to Sarah Green who planned and led many of the sessions this year. We’re delighted that Ellie Woodward has agreed to take a lead in running the Friday training sessions next season. Additionally, some of the

ladies took advantage of the Wednesday night club sessions to further their experience and skills.

Competitions

For the first time in years, we sent a small but formidable team of ladies to the SLSGB National Still Water event in Cardiff. Their outstanding strength, fitness and skills were apparent from the onset, propelling them through each event with determination and remarkable sportsmanship. Their unwavering commitment to success resulted in them earning several victories each, securing some well-earned places on the podium. Congratulations to Paula Bright and Kate Passmore for showcasing your talents.

Enthusiasm for competitions continued and a team of ladies from Perranporth SLSC joined forces with the men to form a strong team for the SLSC Cornish Still Water event at Carn Brea.

14 Perranporth Surf Lifesaving Club 2023 Annual Report

LADIES REPORT

Congratulations to all who competed and represented Perranporth SLSC.

For a multitude of reasons, the number of ladies who competed on the beach this year was very low. This is an area we are looking to build on for next year in the hope that we can take a strong team to both Cornish and National Champs.

Carnival

Having missed several years due to COVID, the ladies were delighted that the carnival was back on and their enthusiasm and excitement was evident to all who watched! They eagerly embraced the opportunity, along with other sections of the club, to dance, have a memorable time and represent our wonderful club. Thank you to Biz and Lauryn Iliffe for choreographing and leading the dance routine.

I’d like to express my gratitude to all those who have contributed to the success of the club through your outstanding efforts. The level of dedication and commitment displayed by many members is truly remarkable. We simply wouldn’t have the wonderful, thriving club that we do without you. Roll on 2024.

IRB REPORT

IRB CAPTAIN Rob Farr

Apart from the large training group, this year saw a couple of unusual activities.

April saw the club getting involved in a RNAS Culdrose aircrash exercise. The scenario was based around two military aircraft colliding over Penhale, with aircrew ejecting over the sea. Our club dummy became that ejected pilot! The IRB team were briefed by the exercise organiser as to where he wanted the downed pilot to appear, and at what time ahead of the exercise going live. It was great to see the club members involved in this prior to the emergency services being mobilised.

The IRB’s also got to go out of county in April, to the Severn Bore. The combination of surf experience and swiftwater flood experience proved the IRB’s to work brilliantly in this environment. This was an initial trip to see if getting the

boats on the river Severn and operating on the Bore was feasible. The IRB’s and the rescue boards made for a great tow in combination, and culminated with a very long ride by Si Jeffery. September saw the usual final assessments after the drivers and crews trained in proper Perran conditions all year. Well done to Summer and Willow Jeffery on both getting their drivers, and to Paul Barrell getting his crew. Thanks to Si Jeffery for all his help this year.

One of my standout moments of the year was seeing Summer and Willow calmly launching from very big, high tide Perran, showing exceptional big surf skill. That in itself made all the years efforts worth it. For those of you that have thought about it, but not yet got to it, catch me over the winter to talk about your starting with the IRB’s next year. I look forward to hearing from you – rob.farr@perranporthslsc.org.uk

SURFBOAT CAPTAIN Paula Bright

2023 has been a year of building ground swell for the Perranporth Boaties. A sense of new energy within the Surfboat community has bought fresh enthusiasm to showcase and invigorate this epic sport.

We’ve had a good trickle of new adult rowers this year as our previous youth crews mostly fledged to higher education and travelling adventures.

Our newbies had their race baptism and got gently spanked by Neptune at our two main summer series events held at Portreath and Saunton Sands. Great results and celebrations were had. See photos above.

Good club fitness commitment has been demonstrated throughout the year and a building bank of new Sweeps learning under the watchful eye of Sweep Jedi, Pete Gaisford.

As serendipity would have it, an intrepid male and female crew from Perranporth have started preparations to attend the World Championships on The Gold Coast of Australia in August 2024. This will also be Sweep Pete Gaisfords 70th year on the planet! Already committed to a rigorous strength and conditioning training programme, we’re feeling positive team cohesion and ambition. This is an expensive endeavour in terms of time, commitment and of course money. We will therefore be holding some fundraising events in 2024 to combine a celebration of our Surfboat World Champ 50 year history and investment in our World Champ future ambitions. We’ll be documenting our preparation journey and would welcome the interest of a big sponsor who’d like to support and be associated with this huge endevour.

Winter training is about to commence from Rustler Slipway in Penryn. If you are keen to give Surfboat Rowing a try, then flat water in Januray is the time. Please get in touch with Paula Bright or Peter Gaisford.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss paying monthly, please contact Matt Sanwell (Membership Secretary) on matt.sanwell@perranporthslsc.org.uk

This year, SLSGB has increased its individual membership fee from £25 to £30, which is included in your PPSLSC membership fee. On top of this, our club house and equipment insurance premium has nearly doubled. We have tirelessly shopped around and critically analysed our needs, but were unable to find a cheaper cost that didn’t reduce the cover.

The proposed new membership fee structure, including the SLSGB fee increase of £5 and a contribution to the increased insurance premium, is as follows: Nipper: £70 - Youth: £70 - Senior: £115 - Associate/Helper: £55

We decided not to also adjust the fees inline with inflation, which was also discussed. This will be accounted for by reviewing our subletting fees.

Thanks to the investment in solar PV panels, management system and a new thermal store via our crowd funding campaign, we hope to have long term energy security and possibly even reduce our power consumption costs!

The next stage is to put the above fee structure to a vote, at our club AGM on the 22nd November - all members are

TREASURER REPORT

TREASURER Tim Keohane

Well, what an interesting first year I’ve had! Following on from the amazing Andy Davies, I took on the role of Treasurer at the last AGM. Matt and Andy told me, ‘all you’ve got to do is pay a few bills once in a while, easy’. I feel like I was kidnapped haha

This financial year like last, we have seen some staggering increases in costs for all of us.

Francis-devine, B. et al. (2023) Rising cost of living in the UK - house of commons library, Rising cost of living in the UK. Available at: https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/ cbp-9428/ (Accessed: 01 November 2023).

The challenge this presented us all at home cannot be underestimated. These pressures put a strain on us all, and had a direct impact in our community and club. It made for a tough year of cost control and fundraising. Reaching deep into our community and corporate sponsorship to support the vital activities of our club, in order we continue to support our membership and the community we love.

You all rose to the challenge, delivering a year of activity we can all be proud of during these extraordinary times. We started the financial year by building on the transparency of reporting and costs, creating a shared folder with the financial reports in each month for the committee to review. We created a budget process, assigning owners to an expected spending profile and reporting/discussing it

each month. It helps us keep our eye closely on our spending habits, and means we were able to respond to forecasted cost pressures with extra fundraising etc. Amongst other really successful fundraising activities, we ran a brilliant Crowdfunding project to help us reduce our impact on our planet by installing a solar system to reduce our carbon footprint and our overall costs.

Outside of the huge increases in our day-to-day operational costs, extraordinary cost pressure came our way when we had to instigate a programme of building works to assure the safety and security of everyone in our club. Renewing our vital fire safety infrastructure, doors, alarms and lighting added to our challenges, circa £12,000. The fundraising and support from you all again met that challenge, the project came in on budget and we now have future proofed fire safety standards.

A review of our building and equipment insurance levels identified a shortfall in cover. A review of our premium meant a doubling of our costs to circa £10’000 pa.

What a year! But what a membership we have. Every time the call went out for fundraising support you stepped up, every time we needed your labour for work you stepped up, every time we asked you answered. What a club, what a membership, what a community. I am proud of the work that has been achieved this year and immensely proud of the community of people who step up time after time.

We met the challenges of this year, we will meet those of next year and we will continue to grow and get stronger. Personally, I want to thank you all so very much for the help and support you have shown me and the committee this year. We don’t do this without you, we do this because of you.

We enter the 23/24 financial year in good shape; we have huge challenges ahead, but I get comfort knowing that you will all step up once again and help us maintain the vital support we give to our community.

SPORT REPORT

Arguably the best race in surf lifesaving - Double Ski - Simon Lawrence and Matt Sanwell representing PPSLSC at the Ocean Nationals

An afternoons paperwork, more than some beaches see in a season, ‘Huddy’ loves paperwork:

SPORT

It was good to get back to a full programme of event for 2023. This report covers, all Regional, National events for 2023, but would also like to highlight all the time and hard work the club Coaches give to the club. Sport has always been a big part of Perranporth SLSC.

The club would like to thank our two new National Officials Elizabeth Iliffe and Keith Lambert who Officiated at both Cornish and National Events.

SLSGB sport is still a numbers game when entering, the larger the team the more chance of winning. Surf lifesaving is one of the only sports where the individual will shine but needs the support of the rest of the team to succeed.
