**PRESIDENT** Pete Gaisford

**Anyone remember the long hot summer of 1976?** It has taken 46yrs for a similar summer to return, with the long hot summer of 2022. Hose pipe bands were introduced and the sea was so warm that a wetsuit was not an everyday requirement.

2022 is the first year when some kind of normality returned following the two previous years of the Covid pandemic with its lockdowns and travel restrictions. The outside wood panelling received a new coating of protective wood treatment along with a coat of paint sealer. Club work parties ensured the building received a thorough spring clean in preparation for a busy summer. The summer weather did not disappoint and the usual club membership day by day, weekly activities resumed once more in earnest.

There are separate reports in this document that will highlight the club members achievements through the year.

Sadly, Perranporth had one drowning incident at Droskyn in August. RNLI Lifeguards went to the aid of the casualty.

Perranporth SLSC club members assisted the Lifeguards upon their return of the casualty to the beach. Our condolences go to the bereaved family.

After two years of difficult fund-raising conditions. The club needs to address how to gain additional funding income. There are still a number of outstanding issues that need to be addressed to ensure that the building structure meets with the ever changing safety regulations.

There are number of changes taking place within the Club Management Committee as some members retire or move away. Can I say a heartfelt thankyou to you all, for the giving of your time to keep the club moving forward. Can I also say a big welcome to those club members stepping forward to fill the vacant management positions. Everyone has a role to play in the success of Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club.

It is volunteers who have built and moulded Perranporth SLSC into what it is today and long may it remain so.

missed out on the points! Never mind there is next year!

## Doreen Lawrence

In September we hosted the Open Nationals! The weather changed! It was still a successful day for the Club. (This was only one day as the week before Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II died)

## **What a great year we had! Came out of Covid-19 and straight into 2022!**

At the start of the year we had Still Water Championships, Swansea first with Youth , Open and Masters and then Cardiff with the Nippers! Those that participated in these events had a great time and the Nippers really did well!

Other Events on our Calendar were the Duncan Newby Swim, the Youth Aquarthon and the replacement for the Triathlon the Perranathlon and the last event the Clubbie Classic.

I would like to thank the Committee for all their support this year and the help from all club members at all our events.

In August we all went off to Dorset for a week! Nippers, Youth and Masters. The weather was excellent, events do go well when the weather is good! Thanks to all parents and helpers, without your support these events would not take place. The Nippers did an excellent job, they got the most GOLD but

A final thank you to those who did voluntary patrols this year, this is the reason we do all of the above to keep our beach safe for others to enjoy.

**2022 will go down as one of the longest and hottest summers. Its mid November and only now is it starting to feel a bit chilly. We had a jam packed year with Covid-19 as a distant memory, a full schedule of events, record membership numbers and club momentum running at full steam.**

beach party with BBQ and Volyball, it was so good to see the whole club come together and have some fun.

Training has been really successful too this year, with lots of focus on technique for the masters. Looking forward, I would like to see more younger faces at the senior training nights. We are back in the pool now and numbers are good thanks to Keith securing the thursday night sessions at the Sir Ben Ainsley Centre. This winter we are focusing much more on surf lifesaving skills and general fiutness which is prooving very popular.

Racing highlights for the club were without doubt hosting one of the most memorable Cornwall Twilight series, with challenging surf and a huge turnout in mid June. We also hosted the National Open Championships in september. Finally, (in the blighted hiostory of PPSLSC trying to host a National comp - usually massive) we had a forecast that was looking chunky, but managable and could produce some amazing racing for both competitors and spectators. However, in a mark of respect with the passing of the Queen, the descision was made to cancel Saturdays racing and run a condensed schedule on the sunday. The swell had dropped off, but was super clean and just enough to keep things interesting. PPSLSC members pulled together to put on an event to remember, with clubs traveling from all over to compete in the first official event for 3 years.

After what will be 8 years, I have decided to step down as captain in March 2023. I have enjoyed the challenge immensly (and found it hard and stressful at times) I have learnt a huge amount and gained confidence in public speaking and drumming up enthusiasm for events etc. It was made easy with the unwavering support of the rest of the club comittee, a truely great and committed crew. Now feels like the right time to hand the captaincy reigns over. I look forward to seeing the club blossom and grow.

Our own events were very successful too, the Duncan Newby Swim had perfect conditions and saw teams from other Cornish clubs and we also held the first Perranathlon (Swim, Run, Wade, Cry) which was very well recieved. We also had a summer

SECRETARYS REPORT

CLUB PATROLS

## **SECRETARY** Nigel Bowden

**As per normal it has been another busy year for the Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club with another 12 months of hard work and commitment and getting back to some normality after two years of the pandemic. To list all the achievements over the year would just take too much time, so I would like to thank all the members of the club for all their time making the club such a great place to be. There seem to be a lot more now getting involved which we have been lacking over the last few years.**

This has been a very difficult year for everyone when it has come to fundraising; this has not only been for the club, but everyone is feeling the pinch. This year we have seen all the wood cladding outside the club being treated which is hopefully the start of some refurbishment to the clubhouse. The committee is very much aware of all the work that is needed to upgrade the clubhouse and are now looking into some focussed fundraising and grant funds to get this work carried out.

To see the Club Patrolling on a regular basis really show what dept’s the club has, and how important this activity is. Our Volunteer Patrol Coordinator (Tom McRitchie) is now looking to put together some important training throughout the winter so that we can offer more to our community. If you have some spare time, please support him.

This year we see 7 of the committee standing down. Being a committee member is a huge commitment and always open to criticism on some of the decisions made, but without them the club would not be able to run. I would like to thank them for all their hard work over the years.

• _**Andrew Davies (Treasurer):**_ Over the last few years he has put into place a more structured budgeting structure which will help the club moving forward. Andrew is leaving the committee but will still be involved with the club on a Coaching level.

- _**Matt Sanwell (Club Captain):**_ Like all Captain’s he has left his mark and always led from the front.

- _**Lynda Bowden (Membership Secretary):**_ Lynda has been part of the committee for over 15 years and has held several posts. Her legacy is still a big part of the club by setting up the Nipper Swimathon and the Biatholon (which is now the Aquathon) back in 2005.

- _**Ben Gardiner (Committee, RNLI Liaison):**_ Due to work commitments Ben is standing down and his Lifeguarding knowledge of the beach will be missed. Ben is truly one of the unsung heroes of the beach.

- _**Rob Nunn/Sam Chamberlain (Lifesaving Officers):**_ The work that Rob and Sam have carried out is the backbone of the club.

- _**Esme Rogers (Vice Captain):**_ Hopefully we will still see Esme around the club, but life moves on and I wish her luck in her new venture.

- _**Aaron Jones (Committee, Boat Captain):**_ Aaron may be standing down as Boat Captain, but I have a strange feeling that this is just a new start in his club life as his children move into Nippers.

Perranporth SLSC is such an asset to our beach and the community of Perranporth so let’s all keep working together and see the club grow from strength to strength.

Our patrol volunteers put in an incredible 352.5 hours over the course of the summer holidays in which we had 713 face to face interactions with members of the public. 140 of these were preventative actions such as, but not limited to, advice given about the dangers of swimming in rips, tidal cut offs and jumping from rocks.

## **CLUB PATROLS** Tom McRitchie

In terms of incidents, we did 19 minor first aids (mainly cuts and weaver fish) 1 major first aid, 2 lost or found persons, and 4 incidents (rescues and assists).

**This year was our 4th year of officially declared patrols to HM Coastguard. Continuing from last year, we were patrolling from 6pm till 8pm however we extended our patrolling from just the month of August to the full 6 weeks of the summer holiday.**

Next year we plan to patrol even more than this year and will hope to cover 6pm till 8pm for the 2 week Easter holidays, 1 week may/June half term, 6 week summer holiday and 1 week October half term. We also hope to find further sponsorship for more uniform and patrol equipment so our volunteers have everything they need to keep our beach safe and free from preventable drowning!

The Watering Hole and Creative View kindly sponsored patrol clothing and a patrol flag for this season meaning that our volunteers looked like a professional service. Being easily recognisable as life savers and lifeguards meant that members of the public could come to us with issues they had knowing they were in the right hands. Also, when giving out our advice and making preventive actions, members of the public know that we’re qualified to do so. We thank The Watering Hole and Creative view for their support. Also thank you to our Chairman, Doreen Lawrence, for sorting out the manufacturing of our kit and getting the sponsorship to pay for it.

If you’d like to patrol next year, then please keep and eye on the surf club socials for information relating to our patrol dates next year or feel free to contact me directly expressing interest (tom. mcritchie@perranporthslsc.org.uk). The more people that help out, the more the work load is shared!

I’ll also be running various levels of qualifications in the winter for anyone that would like to get involved but doesn’t currently hold any lifesaving qualifications. Keep an eye out on socials for course start dates.

Over the course of of 44 days, 47 club members stepped forward to help keep Perranporth beach that much safer once the RNLI Lifeguards had finished their shift for the day.

NIPPERS REPORT

## **NIPPER MANAGER** Spike Gaisford

**Perranporth Nippers have been firing on all cylinders this year. This is thanks to the commitment of our parent coaches behind the scenes who give up their time each week on the beach and at the pool to facilitate the sessions for the 141 Nippers on our books. Without these incredible parents we would not function at all. The whole Club is solely run by volunteers, and we are so grateful to everyone who gives their precious time to keep us afloat in our 65th year.**

children’s desire to do their best plus their parent’s time commitment to being at the events is the recipe for our success. I won’t list the many medals and point scoring places achieved here as the list is very long - you will find them in the Sports report! We are incredibly proud of you all.

Our move back to the space of Newquay Waterworld Pool in January helped inspire 57 Nippers attend the Cornish Frostbite at Penzance. Many younger 8s, 9s & 10s stepped up for the first time. Remember, Covid meant they had not been to a competition since joining as 7-year-olds. Nerves were calmed and each Nipper was outstanding in performance and behaviour. So too were the parents who had volunteered to be poolside - timing and marshalling Cornwall’s finest. We were rewarded with second Club overall, the icing on the cake for everyone who attended. The SLSGB National Pool champs in Cardiff

Jayne Chapman and Andy Davies again enthusiastically ran Sunday competition beach training sessions during the Summer for any Nippers 8+ keen to take part at events. Without doubt these extra sessions have paid off with our highest Club rankings for many years both in the pool and at ocean competition in Cornwall and nationally. Jayne and Andy’s hard work, the

The Ocean events were back on with a vengeance this year. The Cornish champs at Portreath saw 56 Nippers make up our team and we cracked out a tight 4th overall, only 11 points between 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The event was run during the heatwave and our Nippers coped marvellously. New to the event, many parents graciously stepped forward to assist with the region entry requirement to provide help with event management and

were held quite late in May and I do think this had an impact on our entry with only 25 making the trip to the fab 50m pool. 18% of our Nipper membership is not much when you think about it, yet these children managed 6th place overall out of 28 UK Clubs with a large haul of medals. It would be superb if we could take more children to the GB Pool event in 2023, it’s not that far and is a wonderful experience.

water cover. The weather was still hot, hot, hot at Branksome Chine, Dorset in August for the SLSGB National Ocean Nipper Champs again and 25 children travelled up for the 2 days, camping and competing. We were 5th Club overall but the took largest number of Golds (25) of any club. Numbers again less for the team, I appreciate that it is the school holidays, people are away and the distance and cost can be an obstacle however these events are where long-lasting memories and friends for life are made. Please consider being part of the team in the future.

The Max Hocking Day at Hayle was well attended by 50 Nippers enjoying games and fun races. I urge any parent with a child less enthusiastic about races/events to come along to the 2023 day. You will see what a fantastic movement Nippers is. Our fundraising Youth Aquathon was resurrected and there was a good turnout from the Perran Nippers despite the rain. For once the sea was kind, which meant the swim was longer. Everyone impressively dug deep and managed to complete the timed swim and run, definitely testing some of our Nippers but the smiles post event showed how much the achievement meant. I hope we can double the entry in 2023 and for all events. Parents, we only ask your child to attend a maximum of 5 events/days yearly and of course regularly attend our weekly sessions in exchange for the privilege of being a Perranporth Nipper especially when we have so many children desperate to be a part of the Club. On that note we will be monitoring weekly attendance in 2023 as it is unfair on our waiting list children if our “members” only rock up very rarely. Fortunately, it’s only a minority we need to keep an eye on.

Our Nipper Mum’s, Donna Parker, Sangeeta McNair, Kelly Jeffs and Naomi Jones also gained their First Aid qualifications at the Monday Award nights. All of their commitment adds up to help the Club run its sessions and put voluntary evening patrols on. To our parents, look out for the next round of Lifesaver/Lifeguard/First Aid/Coaching courses starting and sign up. We need every single one of you to buy in to both Nippers and the Club. We need your fundraising ideas. We need more of you to take the awards. We need to see you at one of our summer evening patrols, after all it’s what the Club is about, there is a job for everyone. If your children can do it, so can you, it’s not just a side-line spot for you as a parent!

YOUTH REPORT

## **YOUTH MANAGER** Sarah White

NO 2021 YOUTH AWARDS WERE PRESENTED DUE TO COVID

Our Youth have been awesome again this year, achieving a whole host awards, qualifications, and competitions, their tenacity continues to amaze me.

Our return to the beach in May was accompanied by some great conditions, we were very fortunate this season to not have to move or cancel any of our sessions.

Swimming continued at a pace over the winter season at Redruth School pool, technique and endurance pushed our swimmers and came into its own when we returned to the beach. This Winter we have returned to the pool at the Sir Ben Ainsley Centre and Redruth School Pool, and it would be great to think we can put all the weekly training to good use and enter both County and National pool events.

Huge congratulations to Willow Jeffery, Aisling Cook and Abby Martyn who on qualifying as Lifeguards became employed by the RNLI to patrol our local beaches, the club is hugely proud of all our youth who undertake the Lifeguard training and then go onto serve our local community, upholding the clubs tradition of ‘where Lifeguards are made’.

CURRENT NUMBER OF YOUTH MEMBERS

## **60**

Congratulations to Amelia Parker, Elodie

McNair, Lilah Talbot and Jack Rowlands who have passed their Lifesaver Award and to Byron Postle, Freddy Gaisford and Finn Jeffery on completing their Lifeguard award, we look forward to seeing you patrolling on our local beaches next season.

Thank you to all our Youth who have supported the Clubs Patrols outside of the Lifeguard hours.

Our weekly beach nights have seen a variety of activities with all our Youth completing their Swim, Board and Tube awards, we have been lucky to have a few evenings where we have been able to get the skis out at Perranporth. Notices have been reintroduced with much hilarity and everyone taking turns in reporting them, along with food which seems to be hugely popular.

We took a great, but small team to the Cornish Champs at Portreath, a great effort by everyone especially Tom Dingle, Jowan Kerry and Jacob Webb.

The above then went on to represent the Club at the Youth Nationals at Brankscome Chine joined by Rosie Norton and Henrik.

Two of our Youth members Seb Bartlett and Alex Robinson entered the inaugural Perranathlon a great achievement and inspiration to the rest of Youth, we look forward to see more of you entering next year.

The final competition was the National Open held on our very own beach, well done to Seb Bartlett, Tom Dingle and Ben Hardwick who bravely entered.

A huge thank you to all our wonderful coaches who give up their time to come and support us, to the parents who coach, transport, cook and clean up you are all awesome and we couldn’t do it without you.

LADIES REPORT

LADIES REPORT

## **LADIES CAPTAIN** Anita Fleet

**After two years of restrictions, 2022 has enabled us to return to normal activities after COVID-19. It has been wonderful to see our bustling club open and active once again. The club has continued to build on the success of previous years and has welcomed many new ladies to our thriving club.**

masters who were all keen to compete and show their talent at the SLS Cornish Champs at Portreath. Hopefully this incredible enthusiasm will continue next year and we will have an even larger team!

The Duncan Newby Surf Swim was another success this year with some of our ladies forming teams and taking on the challenge. By entering and swimming as a team, rather than individually, it incorporates characteristics of surf lifesaving – enduring your own physical challenge while maintaining awareness of the conditions and performance of those around you.

Having reflected on previous years, the coaches decided that the best way to move forward with the training was to run ladies’ night on a fortnightly basis. This appeared to be a success, with many committed ladies attending the fortnightly sessions.

Once again, all the instructors have been amazing. They all offer something unique and help to support, encourage, inspire and keep us all safe in the water. I cannot thank you all enough for your precious time, valuable knowledge and on-going support. A special thank you to Sarah Green who planned and led many of the sessions with the support of the other instructors.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your sterling efforts in supporting and running the club. The dedication and commitment of many female members is incredible - not only in the training and competing side but also in the organisation and general running of the club.

Overall, 2022 has been a successful year where new friendships have been formed, lifesaving skills learnt and good times enjoyed by all. Roll on 2023.

It was wonderful that competitions could resume and it was the first time, in a very long time, we had a large team of female

**IRB CAPTAIN** Rob Farr

**The sunny summer of ‘22 got us back to normality. The year started with some great coastal tours up and down our coastline, with some crew members seeing it close up for the first time. I’ve done these trips for years, but still manage to find something new every time because of the different tide, sea and weather conditions. A forever changing canvas.**

to finish this year, you will be at the top of the list to qualify early next season.

The Perran IRB crews were on hand to help with the successful Duncan Newby swim, the early season twilight in really chunky surf, and the Open Nationals in September. It was great to see the Perran surf turn on for these events! IRB crews trained at Perran can operate in these testing conditions confidently and safely, enabling the events to go ahead.

A very large group signed up for IRB training, with varying ages and experience. Many complete beginners to it. It was good to be getting the young guns trained up with their crew and drivers to help them gain their first position with the RNLI. It was also good to get the older club members trained and qualified to be that backbone of essential watercover to enable the various events to go ahead.

Thanks as always to Jason Wheeler, Shane Tellam and Tom Mcritchie for helping along the way. Perran couldn’t keep producing the crews without you.

Looking ahead to next season, we need to ensure that we keep a stream of people trained and available to help with water cover and maintenance. If there’s anyone out there who has their lifeguard or surflifesaver and wants to get involved with the IRB’s, please let me know. No experience required, just a desire to get in there and learn, and support your club.

Well done to those gaining their IRB crew award - Aisling Cook, Paula Bright, Rebecca Jeffery, Summer Jeffery and Willow Jeffery. And those gaining their IRB driver award - Simon Jeffery and Matt Sanwell. Those that didn’t quite manage

**Due to family commitments, Aaron is standing down as Boaty captain. We thank him for all his hard work over the years welcome his kids to Nippers!**

will be ‘taster’ sessions in the new year if anyone is unsure if the surfboat is for them (it is). In addition ‘sweep school’ will be resurrected and a few keen, experienced rowers will be learning the art/ science of sweeping the boat. If you have good surf awareness and a shouty voice, we need you!

Mostly thanks to the Boaties, PPSLSC secured 6th in the SLSGB National Open champs (hosted by us). With a gold in the female and mixed events and a bronze in the mens.

Winter training has started at 7-8pm on a Wednesday evening, where a combination of ergo technique and fitness and circuit training gets a good sweat on. Open to club members over 14yrs old.

Formal river rowing will re-start in January and if you’re a member who’d like to give rowing the Surfboat a go make yourself know to Mr Gaisford or Paula Bright ASAP, There

**TREASURER** Andy Davies

**It has been another challenging year financially. There have been numerous costs that have been incurred due to the continued return to activity and much needed investment in the building and other club assets; all of which are operationally critical.**

We have seen a return to more regular fundraising with the club raffle, the hosting of events and BBQs and running the Perranathlon and Youth Aquathlon. This has helped to fund the much-needed investment in the building and equipment repairs and maintenance.

As Treasurer, and on behalf of the committee, I would like to thank everyone for their efforts on fundraising and the work parties that carried out the building maintenance. This has kept the costs down and will help prevent future costs – a great investment.

As a committee (and club) I feel we should be proud of how we have navigated this period of uncertainty and maintained our financial control, whilst still delivering a successful return to activity and investment in new and existing assets.

The operating environment is going to continue to be challenging going into the 2022/23 financial year and beyond. The primary driver of this is no longer Covid. This is now inflation and the impact that this will have on members personal finances and the general operating costs of the club.

Increased fundraising will therefore remain crucial to successfully maintaining financial resilience. The 2021/22 financial year has seen a return to more meaningful fundraising, and it is really good to see that this is coming from more sources, with more club members getting involved. This has had a really positive impact on the club community.

As a team event, to swim the length of Perranporth Beach encourages the teamwork aspects of lifesaving, requiring swimmers and board cover to work together to operate a buddy system. All the teams completed the challenge and enjoyed a BBQ and refreshments at the club house after. We are looking forward to growing the event in 2022.

When Duncan passed away after a fight against cancer, he left a legacy fund to Perranporth SLSC to continue to encourage members of the club to stretch their swimming abilities. The event was created by Simon Jeffery in 2019. We were unable to

## **PERRANATHLON 2022**

## **AQUATHON 2022**

**We held the inaugural Perranathlon (Swim-Run-WadeSprint) event in September, a new alternative race to our Triathlon which has been a victim, hopefully temporarily of the A30 roadworks. Forty eight fledgling individual, relay and pair entries saw a wide range of people aged 16+, swimming and running across our beach and the surrounding dunes.**

**It was great to put the children’s event back on after a 2-year Covid break. This year we ran it in the afternoon following the Perranathlon rather than separately and this kept our costs and peoples volunteer time down. The weather turned on us, but despite the pouring rain the 77 children (7-16 years) who entered were superb and still smiling at the end. The children were properly put through their paces in the swims as the conditions allowed full distances to be swam, no wades this year.**

Neptune was kind for once, giving us magnificent conditions for the swim which looked so unusually long as you could actually see the buoys! The Club lifeguards, lifesavers and IRB drivers came together with our friends from the RNLI to ensure everyone was safe in the water. Always a Scout, Simon Jeffrey set a creative long dune run overnight before the race began by the light of his head torch and super organised Sarah White commanded a team of marshals drawn from members, parents and club friends to ensure the beach and dune course was safe and clear. The event involved a 1km surf swim, 10k run over the beach, cliff and dunes , a 750m leg sapping wade finishing with a 500m beach sprint. Club member Michael Birchmore was first man home and Holly Andrews first lady. Thanks to Snugg and Piran Surf for the prizes donated.

It was great to see children from across Cornwall SLS clubs enter although it would have been nice to have more entries from our own Nippers, after all the event is a fundraiser for their own Club, the race is individually timed and is a personal challenge. Again, I think a new organising team for this might refresh the event format, generate more entries and thus funds, but different/new parents and members need to step forward and do this rather than leave it to the same old few faces who would gladly retire!

The BBQ and refreshment team under the capable guidance of Ruth Ashwin for the day was brilliant and a big thank you to the parents who helped with this and the donations of cakes as it provided much needed funds for the Club For our events to be a successful both for the competitor, and the Club as fundraising streams, we really do need you the members and our Nipper/Youth parents old or new to join the organising teams to share the thinking/doing/promoting/prizegetting load. Is this you? If so, please get in touch.

Feedback was good from competitors who loved the challenge of the distances/terrain. From an organisational/logistics perspective it was so much easier to set up than the Tri with everything on the beach, this will be a great event moving forward. However, the Club needs some fresh different/new members to join the organising group moving forward.
