ASSOCIATION OF FRIENDS OF

PRINCE MICHAEL OF KENT COURT

(WATFORD)

Annual Report

Item Minute

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The full name of the Charity is the Association of Friends of Prince Michael of Kent Court (Watford), also known by its working name of the Association of Friends of PMKC. The Charity’s number in the Register of Charities is 1040781 and the principal address is 3 Wildwood, Northwood, Middlesex, HA6 2DB.

It has been accepted as a charity for tax purposes under Inland Revenue reference XR 27499. The charitable tax exemption can, therefore, be claimed in appropriate cases.

During the financial year the Charity was under the control and management of the following who comprise the Board of Trustees:-

Julien Sampson Chairman
Stuart Sampson Secretary
Graham Hamwijk Treasurer
Doug Brodie Membership Secretary
Terence Beckett Board Member
Andrew Farleigh Board Member

Aims and Organisation

The objects of the Association may be summarised as to relieve and assist, by all charitable means, the residents of Prince Michael of Kent Court, Stratford Road, Watford, Hertfordshire, WD17 4DH, by raising funds for the provision and development of facilities and other amenities not normally provided by the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution Care Co (RMBI). A programme of events and activities, often in conjunction with fund raising for the Association, is arranged by the Events Committee, which reports regularly to the Management Committee on developments and progress.

There have not been any major changes in the aims or organisation of the Association, but as our sole purpose is to act for the benefit of the residents, we will make alterations as and when deemed necessary.

The Officers and other members of the Committees are elected at the Annual General Meeting of the Association to hold office for a period of one year. Any Officers or Committee members retiring under this rule shall be eligible for re-election.

General

I would like to begin by thanking Stuart Sampson, who has settled into the roll as Secretary, for all his hard work.

Our Treasurer Graham Hamwijk has brought our Banking up to date with Internet Banking and also managing our Investments Account.

I would like to thank Ian Ferres for continuing to act as the Independent Examiner of the Association's accounts.

Fund Raising has been strong and we will hopefully continue this trend.

Doug Brodie has maintained his efforts to communicate with 'Supporters' and 'Sponsors’. The Co-Chairs of the Events Committee, Roz Brodie and Debbie Simmons, are a great combination, especially as we now hold even more Events at the Home, and we have a full year of events already booked.

Future Projects

We are revamping the Hinton Garden thanks to a kind donation from St Paul's Column Lodge who donated the funds for the original garden in 2018.

We are going to purchase a walking machine to be used in the Fitness Centre.

In Elgood Unit we are building a new patio in the garden with new flower beds etc., as this is now being used for a dementia unit.

Conclusion

I thank the Trustees, Officers, and Members of the Management and Events Sub-committees, Volunteers and Helpers for all their hard work, and this contributes to the success of the Association.

I thank those Individuals, Lodges, Chapters, and other Orders who give so generously and many regularly, in whatever form, one off donations. annual support, and in the future by sponsoring events.

Thank you to the management and the Activities and General Staff at the Home.

I also acknowledge the ongoing support provided by the RMBI Care Co., and the continued support provided by the four local Provinces of Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Bedfordshire, and Grand Metropolitan Lodge of London.

Julien Sampson

Chairman of the Association of Friends of Prince Michael of Kent Court (Watford)

TREASURER’S REPORT

The Treasurer presented a Review of Financial Activities and Affairs

Another successful year for the association.

The following summary highlights the major features of the annual accounts – excluding the Endowment Fund:

The money received for membership and donations have both increased since last year.

Donations totalled £23,774 (£20,017- 2023) and membership £8,365 (£8,190 - 2023) Interest received from the bank of £134 (£45 - 2023) this reflects both higher interest rates and cash balances.

Gift aid was £303. This is only recoverable against donations from members.

General expenditure reduced this year to £18,189 (£28,549 - 2023)

Goods and service to the beneficiaries have reduced by £2,709 this year. This was mainly to a reduction of the amount spent on chiropody services. We reviewed the amount spent on this in 2023 and decided that this was not an effective use of our spending as most of the service being provided did not require a qualified professional.

The amount spend on entertainment has increased slightly, £4,749 (£3,741 - 2023), but greater part of this cost is being covered by specific donations.

There has been no equipment purchased or projects supported in 2023/24.

Endowment Fund

The income from our investments have remained constant £1,893 (£1,854 - 2023). The income generated by the investments is reinvested

This has resulted in a total surplus in 2023/24 of £14,443 which more than covers the deficit of £3,679 from last year.

There has been no need to sell any of our investments this year. We hold these to support any major expenditure required in the future and the value has increased this year to £113,373 from £108,760 last year.

– Treasurer Graham Hamwijk

HOME MANAGER’S REPORT

Occupancy – currently 52 residents. This has continued to increase with 2 rooms almost refurbished ready for new residents. No concerns going forward as there appears to be a need for dementia provision.

MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY’S REPORT

At last year’s AGM, I reported that there were 174 Supporting Lodges and 105 personal memberships on our records. Currently, our records show 175 Supporting Lodges, and 99 personal memberships. In general, membership numbers have in recent years, remained fairly static. Indeed, a few of our supporting Lodges closed down. However, the support we get from Lodges, Chapters and other masonic orders continues to increase in respect of donations and sponsorships.

Unfortunately, although our Open Day last October was planned to be an opportunity to show the facilities of the Home and the accomplishments of the Association of Friends, it didn’t really achieve much as a recruitment opportunity for new members or sponsors. The attendees were already supporting Lodges.

I continue on a monthly basis to ensure that membership subscriptions are up to date, and chase those who haven’t paid. I also make sure that all sponsorships and donations received are acknowledged.

I send regular updates to our members and supporting lodges to keep them appraised of news from the Home and the Association. This not only keeps up our profile with our members and supporters, but also directly brings in donations and sponsorships for events – and occasionally new volunteers.

Doug Brodie - Membership Secretary
