The Soteria Trust staff consists of the founding director, 1 full-time administrator/PA, 1 part-time administrator, accounts manager (1 day/week). Soteria uses voluntary workers as and when needed and occasionally seeks professional advice. The trustees delegate the day to day running of the charity to the director and meet regularly. New trustees to be appointed in the future are required to contribute in three specific areas: work, wisdom and wealth (directly and/or indirectly).

Section C Objectives and activities

Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document

Andy Economides spoke and trained at ‘events’ across the UK and overseas. Throughout the year Soteria Trust continued to oversee the development of the Soteria Business School in Ibadan, Nigeria, West Africa.

Public Benefit: Soteria Trust operates for public benefit through;

  1. Teaching at Christian church services and events in the UK and overseas.

  2. Training in Christian discipleship, outreach and mentoring church leaders in the UK.

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

  1. Provision of a secretarial and business school at Ibadan, Nigeria, targeted especially at needy young people.

  2. Provision of children’s sponsorships at Prospect School, Ibadan, Nigeria and Scholarships at the Soteria Business School, Ibadan.

All events and church services are open to anyone to attend, and although voluntary collections are taken at some services, donations are not compulsory. An honorarium or fee is usually charged for Soteria’s attendance at training events, designed to contribute towards the Trust’s costs. No admission fees are charged to participants for attendance at such events, and the fee is paid directly by the sponsoring body. The business school in Nigeria does charge individual fees for education and in some cases provision of accommodation and food. However, these fees are low by comparison with fees charged by similar institutions in Ibadan, and some scholarships are awarded to students who could not otherwise afford the fees, with the scholarships funded mostly by UK donors.

The Trustees are not aware of any harm caused by the Trust which needs to be balanced against benefits. The Trustees have had regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the Charity Commission.

Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)

Grant-making policy: Soteria provides for its own charitable works and as such does not encourage others to apply for grants. However, grants are considered by the director. Educational scholarships/sponsorships or other requests for help is asked for mainly from abroad to the director for a decision and is at his discretion. The director may consult the trustees for advice.

You may choose to include further statements, where relevant, about:

Specific investment powers: The Trust Deed allows trustees investment powers as written in section 4.2 of the Deed: Power to invest, and vary the investment of, any money for the time being comprised in the Trust as the Trustees think fit and investments shall be taken to include the laying money for or towards the alteration, improvement, repair or decoration of the property, the acquisition of assets which do not produce income and the purchase of property with a view to its being used for any charitable purposes.

Soteria Trust completed two extensive charity trips to Ibadan, Nigeria (29 April – 21 May and 10 – 26 November) to develop, improve, and assist with the three educational projects, Soteria Business School (SBS) and Soteria Church. Andy Economides spoke at various meetings in the UK and organised with Faith and Football two Glorious Dinner Evenings. Speaking Engagements: Andy Economides spoke at churches/events in the following places: Portsmouth Christian Fellowship (2), Hambledon Methodist Church (5), Kingsborough Church, Waltham Chase Methodist (2), City Life Church, Portsmouth (2), St James, Emsworth (2), Thomas a Becket, Warblington, Filling Station, Farlington, near Swindon, Foulsham Baptist, near Dereham, St Judes, Portsmouth, and Emsworth Home Church (5). Glorious Dinner Evenings: Four meal events were held at the Village Hotel, Portsmouth with 387 people attending. AT the two dinners (5 July and 18 October) about half of the guests did not know Jesus. The Gospel was presented by Andy Economides and an opportunity to respond given. Andy Economides visited churches before each dinner to promote and inspire Christians to participate and invite their friends. Soteria Trust Anniversary Dinner Celebration: The charity celebrated 29 years of making a difference at the Village Hotel, Portsmouth with 99 Soteria friends. The theme was the ‘Past, Present, and Future of Soteria Trust’. Contributions and presentations were made from various beneficiaries of the ministry of Soteria Trust. The vision and plans for the future were clearly presented. These plans included the Soteria Business School in Nigeria becoming a monotechnic and the succession plan of the future director. The evening enabled the guests to understand and appreciate fully the breath and depth of the work of Soteria. In Nigeria, parents and children were interviewed and consequently awarded 8 new scholarships for children to attend Prospect School. During the November charity visit, Andy and Lekan came across poor, vulnerable, and semi-educated children from Oboda Village. Nine children from the village are now boarding at Prospect school on scholarships. Andy and Lekan spoke at various churches, SBS, and secondary schools during these visits. Section E Financial review

It is the policy of the charity that unrestricted funds which have not been Brief statement of the designated for a specific use should be maintained, if possible, at least to a charity’s policy on reserves level equivalent to between three and six months’ expenditure. The trustees consider that the strength of the trust is the large number of regular (small) monthly gifts by bankers’ order. The trust is not generally relying on large donations, which would make the trust more vulnerable.

Details of any funds materially in deficit

Further financial review details (Optional information)

You may choose to include additional information, where relevant about:

Section F Other optional information

The Soteria Business School in Africa needs more than £53,000 per year to operate properly. Soteria Trust manages the financial giving to the school in Africa carefully throughout the year. Soteria Trust needs new partners . Historically large one-off gifts to Soteria Trust for the school has been and continues to be vital to the school being established and continuing.

The Soteria Trust teams, sometimes with professional volunteers each year to the Soteria School is a key factor to the well-being and success of the school.

Note 2 Accounting policies 2.2 INCOME

This standard list of accounting policies has been applied by the charity except for those ticked "No" or "N/a". Where a different or additional policy has been adopted then this is detailed in the box below.

Recognition of income
Donated services and facilities that are consumed immediately are recognised as income
with an equivalent amount recognised as an expense under the appropriate heading in
the SOFA.
The cost of any stock of goods donated for distribution to beneficiaries is deemed to be
the fair value of those gifts at the time of their receipt and they are recognised on receipt.
In the reporting period in which the stocks are distributed, they are recognised as an
expense at the carrying amount of the stocks at distribution.
Donated services and
facilities
Donated services and facilities are included in the SOFA when received at the value of
the gift to the charity provided the value of the gift can be measured reliably.
Income from interest,
royalties and dividends
This is included in the accounts when receipt is probable and the amount receivable can
be measured reliably.
Income from membership
subscriptions
Membership subscriptions received in the nature of a gift are recognised in Donations
and Legacies.
Membership subscriptions which gives a member the right to buy services or other
benefits are recognised as income earned from the provision of goods and services as
income from charitable activities.
These are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when:
 the charity becomes entitled to the resources;
· it is more likely than not that the trustees will receive the resources; and
 the monetary value can be measured with sufficient reliability.
Donated goods
Contractual income and
performance related
grants
Offsetting
There has been no offsetting of assets and liabilities, or income and expenses, unless required or
permitted by the FRS 102 SORP or FRS 102.
Grants and donations
Grants and donations are only included in the SoFA when the general income recognition
criteria are met (5.10 to 5.12 FRS102 SORP).
This is only included in the SoFA once the charity has provided the related goods or
services or met the performance related conditions.
Donated goods are measured at fair value (the amount for which the asset could be
exchanged) unless impractical to do so.
In the case of performance related grants, income must only be recognised to the extent
that the charity has provided the specified goods or services as entitlement to the grant
only occurs when the performance related conditions are met (5.16 FRS 102 SORP).
Legacies
Legacies are included in the SOFA when receipt is probable, that is, when there has
been grant of probate, the executors have established that there are sufficient assets in
the estate and any conditions attached to the legacy are either within the control of the
charity or have been met.
Government grants
The charity has received government grants in the reporting period
Tax reclaims on
donations and gifts
Gift Aid receivable is included in income when there is a valid declaration from the donor.
Any Gift Aid amount recovered on a donation is considered to be part of that gift and is
treated as an addition to the same fund as the initial donation unless the donor or the
terms of the appeal have specified otherwise.
Gifts in kind for use by the charity are included in the SoFA as income from donations
when receivable.
Support costs
The charity has incurred expenditure on support costs.
Volunteer help
Donated goods for resale are measured at fair value on initial recognition, which is the
expected proceeds from sale less the expected costs of sale, and recognised in 'Income
from other trading activities' with the corresponding stock recognised in the balance
sheet. On its sale the value of stock is charged against 'Income from other trading
activities' and the proceeds from sale are also recognised as 'Income from other trading
activities'.
Goods donated for on-going use by the charity are recognised as tangible fixed assets
and included in the SoFA as incoming resources when receivable.
The value of any voluntary help received is not included in the accounts but is described
in the trustees’ annual report.

2.4 ASSETS
Intangible fixed assets
Heritage assets
Debtors
Debtors (including trade debtors and loans receivable) are measured on initial recognition at
settlement amount after any trade discounts or amount advanced by the charity. Subsequently,
they are measured at the cash or other consideration expected to be received.
Stocks and work in
progress
Stocks held for sale as part of non-charitable trade are measured at the lower or cost or net
realisable value.
Goods or services provided as part of a charitable activity are measured at net realisable value
based on the service potential provided by items of stock.
Work in progress is valued at cost less any foreseeable loss that is likely to occur on the contract.
Support costs include central functions and have been allocated to activity cost
categories on a basis consistent with the use of resources, eg allocating property costs
by floor areas, or per capita, staff costs by the time spent and other costs by their usage.
They are valued at cost.
Investments
Fixed asset investments in quoted shares, traded bonds and similar investments are
valued at initially at cost and subsequently at fair value (their market value) at the year
end. The same treatment is applied to unlisted investments unless fair value cannot be
measured reliably in which case it is measured at cost less impairment.
Investments held for resale or pending their sale and cash and cash equivalents with a
maturity date of less than 1 year are treated as current asset investments
Grants with performance
conditions
Where the charity gives a grant with conditions for its payment being a specific level of
service or output to be provided, such grants are only recognised in the SoFA once the
recipient of the grant has provided the specified service or output.
Grants payable without
performance conditions
Where there are no conditions attaching to the grant that enables the donor charity to
realistically avoid the commitment, a liability for the full funding obligation must be
recognised.
The charity has intangible fixed assets, that is, non-monetary assets that do not have
physical substance but are identifiable and are controlled by the charity through custody
or legal rights. The amortisation rates and methods used are disclosed in note 9.5
They are valued at cost.
The charity has heritage assets, that is, non-monetary assets with historic, artistic,
scientific, technological, geophysical or environmental qualities that are held and
maintained principally for their contribution to knowledge and culture. The depreciation
rates and methods used as disclosed in note 9.6.1.4.
This includes any realised or unrealised gains or losses on the sale of investments and
any gain or loss resulting from revaluing investments to market value at the end of the
year.
2.3 EXPENDITURE AND LIABILITIES
Liability recognition
Liabilities are recognised where it is more likely than not that there is a legal or
constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out resources and the amount of the
obligation can be measured with reasonable certainty.
Investment gains and
losses
The charity accounts for basic financial instruments on initial recognition as per
paragraph 10.7 FRS102 SORP. Subsequent measurement is as per paragraphs 11.17
to 11.19, FRS102 SORP.
Tangible fixed assets for
use by charity
The depreciation rates and methods used are disclosed in note 9.2.
Governance and support
costs
Support costs have been allocated between governance costs and other support.
Governance costs comprise all costs involving public accountability of the charity and its
compliance with regulation and good practice.
Settlement of insurance
claims
Insurance claims are only included in the SoFA when the general income recognition
criteria are met (5.10 to 5.12 FRS102 SORP) and are included as an item of other
income in the SoFA.
They are valued at cost.
These are capitalised if they can be used for more than one year, and cost at least
Redundancy cost
The charity made no redundancy payments during the reporting period.
Deferred income
No material item of deferred income has been included in the accounts.
Creditors
The charity has creditors which are measured at settlement amounts less any trade
discounts
Provisions for liabilities
A liability is measured on recognition at its historical cost and then subsequently
measured at the best estimate of the amount required to settle the obligation at the
reporting date
