MOS President’s meeting – Children: Small adults or
large monsters?
9thJune 2023 - paediatric ophthalmology – at Council House,
Birmingham, hosted by Mr Joe Abbott
2. MOS**Council**have continued to meet throughout the year to
discuss Society matters over MS Teams
**3. Jiscmail**forum is open for members to communicate with one
another to discuss various clinical and managerial issues - please
use it – link to register with the jiscmail forum for those who have
not done so already can be obtained from Secretariat
4. MOS**website**has registration links for upcoming events, past
programmes for CPD purposes, letters to the membership, past
junior prize winners, previous Middlemore Lectures etc.
Please direct potential members to the**Membership**tab on website
to obtain subscription link and membership form.
5. One meeting in 2020 and 2023 and all meetings in 2021 and 2022
were recorded and are published via**Vimeo**links on the website.
The video links are password protected, for MOS members only to
view. Due to AV costs and meetings now being fully hosted in
person, recording of meetings is no longer occurring.
6.**First Rate Ltd**continues to provide administrative service to
Society as Secretariat.
7.**Midlands Ophthalmic Trainees**are attending on a
complimentary basis, as part of their mandatory programme.
8. Please encourage all trainees/ foundation doctors/ medical
students to prepare both academic and clinical work for next year’s
**junior awards**, closing date for abstract submissions will be 6th
September 2024.
9.**Mr Joe Abbott**is retiring as President with**Prof Yit Yang**taking
over the Presidency today, President Elect will be**Mrs Jayshree**
**Menon**. MOS Council thanks**Mr Aidan Murray**for three years of
excellent service to the Society.
10.**Eventbrite**has now been used for 12x meeting registrations. It
is not possible to automatically stop members from registering more
than once - please don’t.
11. Plan for meetings ongoing to be only face to face, NOT recorded,
NOT streamed live.
12. New**MOS Council Trainee Representative**has commenced in
October 2023,**Maria Tadros**, taking over from**Dr Hetvi Bhatt**
who has now completed training.
13.**Eye News**welcome reports of past MOS meetings for their
News Round section of the journal. Please contact Chris by email
with your reports on**Chris@pinpoint-scotland.com**to get them
published.|

Go Cardless – nearly £5000 more than last year – increase in associate membership and 50% increase in subs from 6[th] April 2023
Sponsorship – from 1 virtual, 1 hybrid and 1 face to face in previous year, to three face to face conferences, one and two man stands offered, discount for loyal companies sponsoring all three meetings in a calendar year; far more companies than pre-covid, 27 this meeting
Meetng Atendance – 3 popular face to face meetings where £40 for non-members to register and £75 for late registration/ attendance on the day

Venues – October 2022 total £12175, included payment for 150 delegates and 35 reps and recording costs of £2515; March 2023 total £12334, included payment for 100 delegates and 34 reps and AV/ recording costs of £5984; June 2023 total £9700, included payment for 100 delegates and 30 reps and AV support of £603, reduced AV cost as no technician and no recording; in previous financial year only two meetings were face 2 face and both those prices were honoured from pre covid as both venues had been postponed from 2020, with a £1k deposit already having been paid

Significant reserves are held at the end of the financial year due to the cost savings encountered as 2 meetings were cancelled altogether in 2020 and then 4 consecutive educational meetings were held virtually in 2020-2021, during the COVID-19 era.

|How is the charity
constituted?|The MOS membership comprises of :
Ophthalmologists and Ophthalmic trainees who pay
a membership fee. Membership is open and
welcome to any such individual worldwide, but
most specifcally for those working in the Midlands,
UK.
The MOS member is entitled to vote on matters
afecting the MOS at the AGM and other
extraordinary meetings or occasions calling for a
vote.
The MOS members will be invited to vote on issues,
for example changes in the constitution of the
Society.
The Associate Membership comprises of:
Non-Ophthalmologists working in Ophthalmology
(nursing, optometry, technical, administrative and
scientifc) who pay an associate membership fee.
Associate membership is open and welcome to any
such individual worldwide, but most specifcally for
those working in the Midlands, UK.
An Associate member does not have voting rights.
The Council comprises:

the President, an existing member of the
MOS, elected by the committee, on the
recommendation of the previous year’s president,
for a term of one year, with the expectation of
serving on the committee in the year ante-ceding
and post-ceding the presidential year.

the Treasurer, an existing member of the
MOS, recruited from the MOS membership, usually
for a 5 year term of duty
•
two Secretaries, existing members of the
MOS, recruited from the MOS membership, usually
for a 3 year term of duty

I report on the account5 for the year ended 31 August 2023 which are set out on the following pages.
Respertlve responslbllltles of the Trustees and Independent Examlner
The charity's trustees are fesponsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider
that an audit is not required for this year under Section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) that
an independent examination 15 needed.
It is my responsibility
to examine the account5 under section 145 of the Charities Art
to follow the procedures laid down in the General Direction5 given by the Charity Commission
(under section 14515llbl of the Charities Act, and
to State whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of Independent Examinerfs Statement
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission.
An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the
accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosure5 in
the accounts and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures
undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion
is given as to whether the accounts present a "true arid fairf, view and the report is limited to those matters
set out in the statement below.
Independent Examinerfs statement
In connection with my examination, no material matters have come to my attention, other than that
disclosed on the following page. which gives me cause to believe that in any material respect..
accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act or
the accounts do not accord with the accounting records
I have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn
in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
