Providing support to community and voluntary youth services in Lincolnshire Annual Report 2022/23
Message from the Chair
Working Together for Young Lincolnshire - Our Great Inter-generational Challenge.
The LCVYS year has been a busy one, as you will see from further perusing the Annual Report and Calendar. Together with our Young Lincolnshire infrastructure partners, we have been working to ensure the delivery of generic open access Youth Services throughout the county. It is very easy to put a phrase into the internet nowadays and come up with a raft of information and activity – and so it is with Youth Services. The reality is however, that there are gaps in provision, and that the leisure time needs of young people, and their personal development support are kept moving by the dedicated voluntary youth and community organisations across the county – the LCVYS members.
We are often asked to quantify this by both anecdotal, experiential and statistical information – this is something community organisations take for granted, and those who do not appreciate the wealth of effort contributed by local volunteers should know better – this annual report and calendar will give weight by displaying the considerable contribution visually.
If you are a member organisation or affiliated person, we would love you to get more involved and become engaged with our working groups or committees, if you are not already, as all have something to offer, and a wider range of skills makes for a stronger LCVYS.
Sincere thanks to all who have helped over the year. Prof Charles Shaw FRSA Chair

Development Officer’s Report
Our annual report looks slightly different this year as we chose to use a calendar style to present it. There are reasons that we decided that this format would best reflect the work that we do within youth work to mark events and to highlight our offer. Like most of us there are set dates within the calendar, set seasons and a known. We timetable school holidays, bank holidays, birthdays, anniversaries perhaps even the King’s Coronation. As time goes on the blank dates become more intricate with daily lives and activities. This year working with LCVYS and its members really highlights this with numerous events. For example, the National Table Tennis tournament in July at Wragby ‘RELOAD’ Centre, Young Farmers Rally in May, Young Leaders award in October, Young Lincolnshire Carol Concert in December, our AGM in September and many more. Our calendar and offer to LCVYS members and associates are that we are an organisation that work together, and events run by ourselves or our members are inclusive to young people and communities. It is an opportunity for groups to highlight their work and broadcast further, so a date or event let us showcase that for you throughout our networks. Over the last few years, like most organisations, we reflected on resources and our capacity to deliver a strong voluntary youth service offer. In order to strengthen the LCVYS offer and youth services. Members of LCVYS were invited to
bring together and strengthen the third sector organisations and infrastructure providers that support young people and youth provision across Lincolnshire.
Our aims are:
• To make young people’s lives better by being able to access more chances in life.
• To strengthen the voice of young people through networking, training, volunteer opportunities, achievements and celebration events.
• To work closely with communities and partner organisations to reduce duplication and maximise support and resources.
• To improve delivery / access of available support / provision countywide to increase youth participation.
• To create stronger networks across the county.
Within this year we prioritised several themes including Wellbeing, Diverse Communities and National engagement. Links to the Ghanian young people and community has been a wonderful opportunity to celebrate. Our ‘Wellbeing Charter’ is launching over the next couple of months and members will be invited to workshops to learn more about this and to take away the resource, we recognise that wellbeing is within all our work but are we ‘Doing Wellbeing Well’? You will see within the Calendar our case study of a young person’s
journey including our visit to 10 Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister. Whilst an extraordinary highlight for us, the real excitement came from seeing a young person in a ‘everyday’ youth club grow and thrive. That success comes from every youth worker, volunteer, committee member that takes the time to enable clubs to run, open the doors, turn the lights on, balance the books and most importantly get the tuck shop well stocked!
On a final note, LCVYS is the ‘Voice of the Voluntary Youth Service’ within Lincolnshire, we have many opportunities for our members to engage further with us on the board or on projects. It is important that groups highlight the needs for their communities and young people. Amongst our membership we have a wealth of experience, skills and tools that can be shared between us. We are just a phone call or email away.

Multicultural Work
LCVYS has been working closely with The Centre for Reconciliation (TCfR) who have had a positive impact and interaction with the Lincolnshire Ghanian Society. This is an active and vibrant society who meet regularly in the Church of the Latter Day Saints. Subash (LCVYS Vice Chair) met Casmir (Chairman of the Ghanian Society) to make strategic links for TCfR and LCVYS.
The Ghanian Society has a very active youth community who meet regularly. Youth engagement was discussed including youth participation, youth exchange and the national annual table tennis competition. Subash shared about the work LCVYS does as well as training, grants, strategic development, trips and links to national opportunities.
LCVYS was invited to their annual celebration for Ghanian Day, and other multicultural events including some at the University of Lincoln. This was a wonderful opportunity and great food and performances celebrating Ghanian culture were enjoyed by all.
A very positive link has been made with this community. Interactions have already started, providing support to the locals from this community, including referrals to the Lincoln Hygiene
Bank, run by TCfR. They have also expressed an interest in the cultural awareness course TCfR runs. This will lead to advice and information sessions, and cards for people new to the UK and Lincoln/Lincolnshire. Casmir wants to play a part in this and help get this established soon. Part of the information provided will be youth support and engagement through LCVYS. It will be a great way to promote youth clubs, trips and training courses to individuals and families from harder to reach, diverse, communities.
A similar engagement has started with Pastor Vera Icheke. Vera is Nigerian and Pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, a Pentecostal Church with a growing congregation. There are an increasing number of international students coming from Africa to the University of Lincoln and many are bringing their families. This church has out grown its building on Dixon Way and now hires St Faith’s parish hall on a Sunday morning.
Many of these new families are attending the Mosque, so we will be reaching out to them too. Abdul Nasir, from the Islamic Association, is keen to work with us and Casmir on the advice and information cards and sessions, and we hope to host the sessions in the Mosque. The Lincoln Hygiene Bank will now be hosting a weekly session, from March, alongside their foodbank.
TCfR, alongside a few other organisations, is hosting and organising the Lincoln Spring Faith Festival. As part of this there will be a trip to places of worship in Leicester and it is recommended that it would be a valuable experience for LCVYS staff, volunteers and trustees attend this trip.

Strategic & National Work
A CORONATION EXPERIENCE on behalf of Our Communities Dr Charles Shaw FRSA
What a great weekend the Coronation was and as I sat watching on the Saturday I was wondering about not being able to be at Village Parties and what the next day would bring - if the trains would be running ok and whether the food would be alright. Why? Because I was attending the Prime Minister’s Coronation Party at 10 Downing Street along with two young people from Washingborough - Scarlet Carsen and Jamie Harden.
Well, I didn’t need to worry - the trains were perfect and the walk from Kings Cross to Westminster with four young people from our county and my colleague Fran was just great stopping off for a cuppa and cake near the British Museum we timed it just right for the start of the party. Security was as you’d expect as when you travel at airports - and just my luck the machines went ‘ping’ - after investigating my belt and my badges and my phone they were not the problem. It was the metal tin in my pocket of ‘Smint’ mints that did it. Well I wanted my breath to be fresh didn’t I? So, Rishi Sunak had invited us specially because of work with Children and Young People and particularly Boys and Girls Clubs. In his early life he had supported young peoples’ clubs and has quite a good knowledge of sports, in particular boxing clubs. Discussing with us where we lived, about being from Lincolnshire and he took time to delve deep so many
parts of Lincolnshire get mentioned. Having originally drawn him from other group’s by gently tapping on the shoulder and saying “Prime Minister I would like to introduce you to young people from Lincolnshire who have achieved so much” I now had to say “we had better leave you to talk to others” but he stayed a while and the young people got their photos and appreiation.
The wasn’t ‘Jill Biden’s’ show - as some media outlets portrayed - this was the Coronation’s Show by the Prime Minister’s team and the No 10 staff who were excellent - The PM Served up literally and cut the cake for young people and adult guests and his dog meandered carefully amongst all of us being the very best ambassador adding to the family nature of the event. It was a privilege to represent our communities and our young people and will be remembered for a long time. GOD SAVE THE KING!
Charles Shaw is Chair of Lincolnshire Council for Voluntary Youth Services and a National Trustee of Boys and Girls Clubs.

Young Person of the Year Awards
Blayn, 18, from Lincolnshire first presented to the centre as a vulnerable young person with a complicated home and school life. The formal education setting was not meeting her needs, and her struggles with autism and ADHD resulted in low attendance, and not achieving her GCSE’s. Blayn had very little support at home, and she felt very isolated. Blayn started attending the PACS group at Gainsborough Connexions centre when she was 12. After joining the group, Blayn was able to find her outlet, and with a passion for performing arts she became a regular. Over the years, Blayn’s confidence increased enormously, becoming a senior member of the centre and youth club. Blayn became a welcoming peer, mentor for the younger people, and started to pick up on more leadership tasks within the centre. Her enthusiasm and commitment led to her joining the committee. This new role involved planning sessions, looking at funding ideas, consulting with other members of the group, and feeding back to the board of directors and trustees. LCVYS were approached to formalise these skills. This took the form of the ILM Level 2 Young Leaders Award. The course included understanding what good leadership looked like, planning and running sessions, peer feedback and much more. After completing the written assessments and workbooks, which Blayn found challenging, she successfully passed the course. She was thrilled to have accomplished this and knew it would be beneficial for her future prospects.
Following on from these successes, when Lincolnshire was approached by NABGC to put forward a young person from the county for the Young Person of the Year Award , it was agreed whole heartedly by Lincolnshire NABGC, LCVYS and Gainsborough Connexions Community Hub that Blayn was a fantastic candidate, and we were proud to put forward a joint nomination for her. Being shortlisted to the last 3, all were delighted when she won the accolade at the NABGC Conference Awards Dinner.
