LCVYS

Why we are here

Lincolnshire Council for Voluntary Youth Services is a charity that provides support to community and voluntary youth services in Lincolnshire. We are a partnership of agencies that work hard to promote the work of the voluntary and community youth sector in Lincolnshire.

LCVYS was established to coordinate, help, support and act as the voice of the Voluntary Sector youth services in Lincolnshire. This is on behalf of the voluntary

and community youth organisations as well as individual, independent youth groups and those providing a service or facility for young people.

Our Mission

“To actively support member organisations to enable young people they work with to reach their full potential as individuals and as part of their communities.”

CHAIR’S MESSAGE 2021-22

Prof Charles Shaw FRSA

From the Chair

LCVYS working with its members, partners in Young Lincolnshire and Public bodies did in the year in question provide the bulk of support to ensure that voluntary sector youth and community provision continued in Lincolnshire. This was with a very limited budget for such an important body and area of provision.

A wide and varied range of provision for the leisure time needs of young people, staffed by committed workers and volunteers ensures the growth of citizenship and responsibility in the next generation and takes the cost and pressure off intervention work in public services whose clientele should be kept to a minimum.

Voluntary Youth Services provide young people with personal confidence, freedom and responsibility helping equip them for the challenges of adult life. Modern day issues such as social media create both opportunities and dangers for organisations and their members and the range of training provided by the sector must meet this challenge without lessening the practical aspect of education in youth work.

Post-covid has meant a need for volunteers to replenish those lost on an almost unprecedented scale. This is the challenge and in thanking the organisations supporters and trustees I respectfully say, ‘Your support for the future is now requested’.

DEVELOPMENT OFFICER’S REPORT 2021-22

Hello and welcome to our Annual Report

As we come out of the COVID-19 staff and volunteers have been working extremely hard to ensure that young people have had access to activities and events, maintaining a presence and adapting their ways of working with groups, young people and the community. This has been no easy task and a task that is facing many difficulties and challenges. However, these challenges are ones that we are prepared to take head on. Continue to provide the support to our members and young people and adapt our offer as LCVYS. We are very proud of the breadth and variety of work that we have been able to undertake this year and are grateful for the work our partners in supporting and contributing to our many Networks which help maintain high standards and offer support to organisations and the community.

Throughout the year we have continued to develop our training offer focusing on our E learning and resources. This is now available on our website which we continue to develop our offer of Emotional and Wellbeing training. At a time when our young people need us most it is vital that we can equip staff, volunteers and young leaders with the knowledge to empower the sector. In a time where the news is talking about a third of young people following COVID are left feeling their life is out of control, job prospects are limited and now facing the cost of living crisis. LCVYS as a collective need to work even harder to respond to these needs.

In March this year we were thrilled to be able to relaunch our ‘RELOAD’ Youth Work Conference which was held at Lincoln University. This gave us the opportunity to open the conversation and listen to the needs of the groups. It was fantastic to see such a diverse range of groups, staff, volunteers and young people attend the event and a opportunity for us to recognise the work that goes on in the County and to understand how we could better support the sector.

Our ethos of grass roots and growing our own is even more vital now as the need for volunteers is ever more crucial. Our launch of the ILM Level 2 Young Leaders course has proved hugely successful in engaging young people and them taking ownership of their own clubs and groups, we will continue this over the upcoming year along with new and exciting opportunities for young people to undertake.

It is our role at LCVYS to listen to the challenges and opportunities that face voluntary organisations, and this sometimes is the on-going uncertainty. This is why, more than ever, we need to raise the profile of the amazing work of our volunteers and the sector in order to increase the ever – present challenge of attracting resources that can be put back into Lincolnshire for the benefit of our Young People.

Within this report, we show some of the highlights of the year and our annual account.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

The objectives of LCVYS are to bring together and share the strengths of many youth organisations in Lincolnshire. We do this by associating voluntary organisations, communities and individuals in a common effort to advance youth work and to provide facilities for recreation and leisure time occupation. This is with the aim that young members of the community may grow to full maturity as individuals, members of society and that their conditions of life may be improved. LCVYS also promotes training, and support for member organisations and for individuals as well. In an effort to identify and address issues of common concern and to campaign as appropriate for young people and youth organisations. Finally, LCVYS encourages member organisations to give mutual support, share ideas and deal with issues of mutual concern as well as encouraging young members and their leaders to participate in decision making issues. These objectives are met by the main activities of LCVYS.

LCVYS has continued to support the work of the voluntary youth sector and is the 'go to' organisation for support, advice and to engage in numerous opportunities for young people and volunteers. We take pride in providing high-quality support and advice so that voluntary and community sector, children and young people’s organisations are more sustainable, well led and governed and adapting and changing with today's environment.

It is within our ethos to support organisations to be work effectively to make the biggest difference. It is our role to support them to do this. From years of experience with working with groups in the voluntary sector, whether paid or volunteers, they run better when they are connected to the right resources they need to make a difference. These are for example are Youth Work specifics skills, information management, communication, safeguarding, health and safety, finance and funding.

LCVYS over the year has continued to form strong links across the County, regionally and nationally to create strong partnerships. This has allowed us to steer and influence youth services to invest in creating better opportunities for young people in Lincolnshire.

LCVYS trustees have been a fundamental part of the Charity investing the time and knowledge to achieve forward thinking development.

LCVYS is incredibly fortunate to continue to have a positive working relationship with Lincolnshire County Council and the Future 4 Me team. This allows us to work alongside the County council's Strategic development and to maximise resources for the benefit of young people in the County.

It has a been a pleasure and welcomed partnership with the National Boys and Girls Clubs across the country and Lincolnshire's branch. This has brought a significant offer to our LCVYS members that allow young people to access National, Regional and Local Competitions across a wide range of activities including Boxing, Five a Side, Athletics, Canoeing and hosted by Lincolnshire the National Table Tennis Competition. It has also been refreshing that our members have expressed the desire to work more closely as a county to access some of these events, including the NABGC residential. This is a positive move to support members who may not have engaged in residentials before to receive support through the planning, budgeting, risk assessing etc and being a affordable opportunity for young people to experience and raise aspirations. It is also an excellent opportunity to build networks regionally and nationally with other voluntary youth services across the UK.

Training

Over the year we have been working with Well Within Reach on developing our E Learning platform which is available to members. Courses have been designed to support Young people with mental health, emotional resilience and wellbeing. (www.lcvys.co.uk)

E Learning Courses

Alongside the new E learning, LCVYS members are able to access a resource pack that supports the learning to work with young people. This practical and versatile tool can be used in detached work, group work, 1;1, Online or even as a tool for young people to use on their own. In addition to this as we return to face-to-face training, we are running workshops to bring these fantastic resources together and enable practitioners to develop their own skills.

LCVYS continues to develop its extensive training brochure in order to fit with the needs of the voluntary sector. We have further developed our youth work programmes and are in our Third year of delivering the 'LEVEL 3 in Youth Work'. This is being held in Gainsborough. We were pleased to receive support from The National Youth Agency in order to help subsidise learners. Groups are positively embracing the courses we have to offer, and further developing their own skills to pass on to the groups. We are looking into developing this further and converting some of the training to E learning, this would make the course more accessible for groups across the county and allow us to market this further afield. The relationship with Bishop Grosseteste University continues to be a positive partnership adding a further dimension to the course and access to youth work specific resources.

Working with NABGC and UK Youth we are offering more diverse projects to young people and leaders such as Generation Code and Money for Life. We are always keen to work on these projects as the opportunities available for raising young people's aspirations, self -esteem and confidence are monumental.

With partnership working with the county council, we have been able to promote and offer e learning to many groups around safeguarding and topical courses for groups working with children and young people.

Networking

Networking is incredibly important to LCVYS and despite the pandemic, we have been able to host some online networking opportunities and as restrictions have begun to ease have returned to some face-to-face opportunities. It is very important that we can continue with this as resources to the sector become less and less. The need to work with other members to be able to be resourceful and share ideas, resources is crucial to the sector in coming out of COVID 19.

It has been much more noticeable from feedback from the sector, how groups are turning to us as LCVYS locally but have also been able to access specialised support from the National Youth Agency as well.

LCVYS has been involved in various networking events across the county. This has been to promote the services that LCVYS provide, offer advice and support, promoting grant aid, signposting to other organisations, funding advice, supporting groups with health and safety matters, safeguarding and equal opportunities policies and advertising upcoming training that LCVYS has to offer.

From feedback from our members, groups are keen to continue with further networking events, in particular with relation to representing Lincolnshire in National competitions. We are also seeing a positive impact of groups working together in sharing resources, planning trips with other groups and joint residentials. This makes resources stretch further and increases opportunities for young people across the County.

Networking events were also promoted through Youth Development Hub, Involving Lincs, LCVYS Members/ Network groups Local CVS, sub regional bodies and LCC groups. These were open to voluntary organisations, public, parish, and district councils and youth groups.

Partnership Working

Over the last year we have worked once again with many partners across the county and nationally, including NYA, University of Lincoln, Bishop Grosseteste University, Police, Involving Lincs, CYPVSF, EMVY, Network CVYS and professional bodies. This opportunity has been fantastic for LCVYS and has developed close working relationships which support the work and development of young people. This has also allowed us to place volunteers in placements and for us to also host volunteers/ students.

YOUNG Lincolnshire

LCVYS, as an infrastructure organisation, prides itself in a membership upwards approach and by listening to the needs of our members, we are able to feed the needs of the voluntary youth sector through regional and national channels. Here are some case studies and examples of what our members said they needed and how LCVYS has been able to support these needs.

LCVYS CASE STUDY

How outdoor activities impact Young People

Benefits of Youth Work

Those that work with young people in the voluntary youth services recognise the benefits that a youth group has on children and young people whether it is through a uniformed, faith, individual, or sport group the skills and opportunities available are often vast and take shape in the form of:

Health and Fitness

Specific Skills

With rates of obesity rising nationally and locally in children and young people this is a key area. Benefits for young people will acquire from attending youth groups is healthy exercise through games that are played. Youth groups raise awareness through informal discussion, activities on various health issues that are key in today’s health and wellbeing agenda such as mental health, smoking, legal highs, pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, alcohol awareness, health eating and many more.

Youth groups offer training and activities based on specific skills such as, arts and crafts, cooking, trips these informally encourage the use of numeracy, literacy, digital media and develops problem-solving. These skills are embedded into young people that they will carry with them in future life.

Teamwork

A Sense of Identity

Teamwork is an essential skill that children and young people need to acquire throughout their living life and preparing them for adult life. Youth groups recognise this and run positive activities that encourage the development of this skill. Activities can acquire is the ability to work in a team. Many youth groups will run team games or events where older and younger children mix, and there is a need for each child to work as part of the team in some capacity. This important skill stands them in good stead for future life whether in education, sport, and office based situations. The skill of leadership also is developed through team work. A lot of Youth groups across Lincolnshire offer accredited awards within this area.

Youth clubs and groups offer young people the opportunity to develop their confidence, find a real sense of well-being, and make new friends and to become part of a social group. Whilst for some this may be found through formal education or from family life for others youth groups become a key part of their lives and the relaxed approach through informal education allows these young people to thrive.

Outdoor activities play a huge part in developing these skills and contribute hugely to the health and wellbeing of young people in Lincolnshire. Our LCVYS membership is able to offer a wide range of Outdoor activities to support and inspire children and young people to engage with the outdoors, learn valuable skills and make positive decisions. By supporting young people with these opportunities, it allows youth workers and volunteers to support specific individuals or address a particular issue. This could be supporting young people who are disengaged with learning, are excluded from education, or those with behavioural and emotional needs. The aim is to support young people with the issues they are facing, learn coping mechanisms and give them the confidence to make positive decisions.

Over the period of COVID Youth Centres closed down in the first lockdown which meant that not only did young people not have access to schools, but they didn’t have the opportunity to access positive activities. When guidance began to relax in the July, many of our LCVYS members were able to restart using their creativity and the opportunity that young people were able to meet outdoors. Delivery of youth work quickly adapted to provide opportunities for young people to reengage, socialise and have the support of their youth workers.

Some examples of this are from some funding that we were able to support groups in there re opening and supporting groups with understanding National Youth Agency Guidance and measures to be able to deliver safely.

With Covid 19 having a sudden impact on provision for young people within Lincolnshire, and the majority of young people not accessing School since March 2019. It was felt that once Government restrictions allowed, and groups were able to offer activities for young people following the National Youth Agency Guidance that funding and support was made available for Holiday Activities within Lincolnshire.

We engaged with various areas across the county including North Kesteven, Wragby, Gainsborough, Louth, North Hykeham, Washingborough, Boston, Hartsholme, Skellingthorpe, and Wrangle. A variety of activities took place including arts, crafts, sports, cricket sessions, sports day activities, nature walks, volunteering, decorating centres, gardening, outdoor drama and theatre productions.

Here are some of the examples of the activities over the summer. Over the period 993 places in various settings across the six-week period were available for young people.

At the end of the summer, we engaged with six different youth clubs for a celebration event in which we had a group of 33 Young People attend Fantasy Island.

Feedback from the promotion of one of the Sports Clubs was that despite the concern of losing numbers and members, that the promotion of the holiday activities actually recruited new members.

'We were really anxious we`d lose youngsters that we gained last year due to World Cup win and the Ashes but in fact we not only held onto the increased numbers our advertising and word of mouth got us another increase of beginners.' Ian, Hartsholme Cricket Club

Outdoor Theatre

'Please see attached a variety of pictures from the Outdoor Productions last week! Thank you again, for all your support with this. The young people had a fantastic time, despite the weather.' Amanda Black Friars Theatre.

Wragby RELOAD Centre

A parent whose children attended our summer multi sports programme 2021 said:

“If anyone is considering sending their kids to Wragby youth club I would highly recommend it, really good Covid secure measures in place, fab coaches, a good variety of activities and most importantly the kids love it, feel very lucky to have such a good facility in the town”

Following on from the success in developing the outdoor activities, LCVYS recognised the importance of continuing and investing into Outdoor Education into its training programme. As part of this there are opportunities for young people to receive accreditations through ASDAN awards, opportunities to attend residentials. In March 2022 LCVYS will recommence hosting the ‘RELOAD’ Annual Youth Conference bringing the voluntary sector together and young people to attend workshops, guest speakers and taster events. Part of the Conference will be focusing on what our Outdoor Education and Wellbeing will look like and consulting with young people and Youth workers.

We have also been able to offer the ILM Young Leaders Award to two youth groups which focuses on growing our young people within centres to build our clubs from grassroots. Following the success of this we are planning to host 3 more courses in 2022 including the opportunity for young people to attend one as a residential.

CASE STUDY

National Table Tennis Competition and positive activities for young people

Thanks to the funding we received from LCVYS, we have been able to purchase new sports equipment including table tennis, football, dodge ball, pool and multi sports equipment.

With the new equipment it helped us be able to run holiday clubs during the summer and half terms holidays including football camps, sports days and multi-sport club.

We have also now been able to add a sports element to our weekly youth sessions and offer coaching to the young people that attend our youth clubs including, football, table tennis, dodge ball, pool and multi sports coaching to name a few.

This in turn has given the young people the opportunity to try new sports and get involved with activities they may not have tried before.

A good example of this was with the table tennis none of our young people had ever play table tennis before but because they were given the opportunity to take part in our session. They learnt new skills and enjoyment for new sports. They were then given the opportunity to take part in the nation table tennis tournament that we also were able to host thanks to the funding. The tournament was a great success under current circumstance and Two of our young people even managed to win medals at the tournament and have carried on playing and enjoying the sport. One of them said” I never knew I would like table tennis but now I love it and when can we do it again”.

Another good example was during our holiday football camp a young lad attended who had just moved to the local area from South Africa, he had never played football before but enjoyed it so much he made his parents go out and by him a full Lincoln city football kit and Astro turf boots ready for the next session. He has now found a love for football and takes part in our weekly sessions as well as join a local football club.

We currently have approximately 60 members (25 girls and 35 boys) who have attended our weekly sessions over the last year and a half.

We have a very varied group of young people some from deprived back grounds others with special educational needs such as Autism and ADHD, we have young people with different cultural back grounds such Indian and South African descent. So, over the last year or so it has been amazing to see how through our sports and youth sessions it has brought them all together in ways they may not have without them.

Some of our young people have been that enthused they have now taken on the role of young volunteers and are involved in the assisting and running our sessions we run, and we are hoping in the near future to put them through the sports leader award.

During our Football and multi sports holiday camps we had approximately 20 young people attend on each occasion. Approx 12 sessions. Again, a lot of the young people attended had never taken part in some of the sports like table tennis, basketball, pool and even football.

Our table tennis tournament which was all inclusive and open to all young people of any ability was a great success and had 65 people attended included 30 young people taking part in the main tournament coming from clubs from not only Lincoln but from Nottingham and Durham respectively. As an outcome of this event Lincolnshire Young People were invited to different Counties to experience different clubs across the country and the variety of events taking place.

Thanks for the continual support that LCVYS provides, not only funding but guidance, training, networking opportunities and to be invited to take part in your Annual Youth Work Conference next year.
