## Annual Report. The GEM Appeal Charity Number 1040083

Annual report for the year 01/01/2023 – 31/12/2023.

The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Genetic Trust (GEM Appeal) is constituted by deed of trust and is a registered charity, no 1040083. Its address is 6 Yealand Close, Bamford Rochdale OL11 4DL. The charity trustees at the start of the year were as follows:

Mrs Karen Johnson (Chair) Mrs Katie Duxbury (Vice Chair) Mr Garry Whitworth (Treasurer) Mrs Wendy Mills (Secretary) Mr Peter Johnson Mrs Joy Whitworth Mr David Howles Mrs Lynn Howles Mrs Judith Paraschack Mr Robert Rawsthorne Mr Mario Burian.

Due to time restrictions the charity was unable to hold the AGM until February and at the AGM the trustees reflected and analysed the past year and what it meant for the charity. The officers and trustees were re-elected and at this point Mr Mario Burian proffered his resignation for personal reasons.

Whilst all the trustees were sorry that Mario was leaving they all understood and thanked Mario for his support and service to the charity. In return Mario did say that he would continue to support the charity where and when he could.

It was also decided that Mario would not be replaced as we would now be back to our original number of trustees (ten) something we said we would do when we originally upped our number to allow Katie Duxbury to become a trustee.

We ran our annual events as usual and it was noted that whilst we no longer had the problem of the Covid pandemic the cost of living crisis was biting hard and had an adverse effect on our events. It has to be said that none of the events made a loss, however, the profit margin was reduced on most of the events. We as a charity were grateful that people turned up and despite not being able to support us with as much cash as in previous times, still enabled us to make a profit at each event.

The sponsorship deals we enjoyed in the past also did not emerge during 2023 and this had an adverse effect on our Winter Ball which showed quite a large drop in profits when compered to previous years but nevertheless still was our biggest earner of the year. On top of this the company we used to help set up the event ceased to exist at 31 December 2023

which meant we had to find another company for the 2024 winter ball. We were lucky that the person who originally owned the company and then sold it came back in to the picture and started again by taking on our event for November 2024.

As stated in previous reports the monies we raise were being used to fund a research scientist at the Willink unit and the scientist was put in to place during 2023. The unit asked us to continue raising funds to extend the contract of the scientist for another year and if sufficient funds were available, another eighteen months.

All the trustees were in agreement that this should be our aim and we have raised enough funds to extend the contract for twelve months. We are presenting the cheque to the unit on 17 April and this then takes the contract of the scientist through to June 2025 and we intend to continue our fund raising with a view to funding a further six months as per the unit’s request.

As can be seen from the above statement the aims of the charity remain the same: Funding to provide research into incurable genetic diseases in children, treatments and potential cures.

Provision of equipment to improve treatment and help with the above.

As always the AGM ended with the recognition of the time donated and the efforts put in by everyone associated with the charity and the fact that everybody involved is a volunteer and does not receive any form of reward for their time and efforts

RMCH GENETICS TRUST (GEM APPEAL)
Report of the Trustees for the year ended 31 December 2023
The Trustees present their report and financial statements for the year ended 31
December 2023.
The charity is registered, No. 1040083. with the Charity Commission in England and
Wales.
ObJ•ctives and activities for the publlc benefft
The Gem Appeal was established in 1994 wrth the purpose of providing relief to
children and young people SLrffering rnetabolic disease. The charrty's goveming
document is its deed dated 8 August 1994 which gives the trustees the power to apply
the funds in such a manner as they think fft for the benefit of any charitable objective or
purpose.
The aim of the charity is to fund research and support at the Manchester Children's
Hospital and as such the charty does not make grants to people or organisations
whom apply speculakn'vely.
To meet this aim the charity hosts a number of charTtable fundraising events throughout
the year. The Winter Ball is the most significant in the charty's calendar, which is held
with celebrrty patrons.
The trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity
Commission's general guidance on public benefft when reviewing the chanty's aims
and objectives, in planning future activrties and setting the policies for the year.
Structure, governance and managemont
The charity deed now provides for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 11 trustees.
Where there is a ￿quIrernent for new trustees, these would be identrfied and appointed
by the remaining trustees. The trustees used the Powers of Amendment in Sects'on 6 of
the Trust Deed to vary the maximurn numter of trustees to 11.
The chair of the trustees is ￿spOnSible for the induction of any new trustee. This
involves awareness of a trustee's responsibilities, the goveming document,
administralive procedures. the history and philosophical approach of the charty.
Achlevements and perforniance
During the year the chanty has generated funds of £49.135 (2022 £65,889). Total
costs in generating these funds amounted to £38,647 (2022 - £35,803) resulb'ng in a
surplus of £10,487 (2022 - £30,085).
The charity has been able to continue its support of the Manchester Children's
Hospital. The support of Manchester Children's Hosprtal ￿MaInS the focus of the
ongoing work of trustees.

RMCH GENETICS TRUST (GEM APPEAL)
Report of the Trustses for the year ended 31 December 20231continued)
Reserves Policy
The trustees aim to secure sufficient regular income and a reserve balance to be able
to meet its objectives.
Financial risk management objectives and policies
The charity makes Irttle use of financial instruments other than operational bank
accounts with reputable banks, so rts exposure to price risK credrt risk, liquidty risk and
cash flow risk is not material for the assessment of the assets, liabilities. financial
position and net movement of funds of the charty.
Plans for the future
The trustees are committed to continue providing support to the Manchester Children,
Hospital and in particular placing emphasis on providing further donations for new
capital expenditure and vital research to the Wllink Unrt.
Statsment of Tn￿tees, responsibilities
Law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare
financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the
charity's financial activities during the year and of Its financial position at the end of the
year. In preparing financial statements giving a true and fair view, the trustees should
follow best practice and..
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently,.
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent.,
state whether applicable accounting standards and statements
recommended practice have been followed, subject to any material departure
disclosed and explained in the financial statements. and
prepare the financial statements on the going concem basis unless it 18
inappropriate to presume that the charrty will continue in operation.
The trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records which disclose with
reasonable accuracy the financial posrtion of the charrty, which enable them to
ascertain the financial position of the charity, and which enable them to ensure that the
financial statements comply wrth the Charrties Act 2011 and the Charity (Accounts and
