LEADERS NEEDED!!!!
As the largest Scout Group in Crawley we’re very fortunate to have amazing facilities to host our offering to young people in Crawley. But however good the facilities, it’s the people that make the difference and make Scouting special.
Through the pandemic, our leaders have been amazing, but we’ve had a few changes and quickly need to recruit some new leaders so that we can get all our sections back up to strength.
We need new leaders for all our sections, so if you’re thinking of joining us that’s already incredibly welcome. But maybe I can also encourage you to consider a section where your son or daughter is not currently a member. Often, new leaders join us when their child enters Beavers or Cubs, but by the time their child gets to Scouts, parents are less inclined to volunteer, and so we struggle to attract new blood.
Scouts is the age when our young people actually need the most support. Teenage life brings more stresses and pressures than we realise which is why it is important to offer a safe place where our young people are able to have amazing experiences which they can’t get anywhere else and which help to prepare them for adulthood. I always used to say that I liked helping to run Cubs because you got to help shape lives. That’s still very true, but another leader on my training said he found Scouts rewarding because he had the opportunity to keep the young people in his group on track or pick them up and help them get back on their life journey.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
4[th] Worth Scout Group was founded in 1908 and is therefore one of the oldest groups in the world.
The Group’s governing documents are those of The Scout Association. They consist of a Royal Charter, which in turn gives authority to the Bye Laws of the Association and the Policy, Organisation and Rules of The Scout Association.
The Group is a trust established under its rules which are common to all Scout Groups. The Trustees are appointed in accordance with the Policy, Organisation and Rules of The Scout Association. The Group is managed by the Group Executive Committee, the members of which are the ‘Charity Trustees’ of the Scout Group which is an educational charity. As charity trustees they are responsible for complying with legislation applicable to charities. This includes the registration, keeping proper accounts and making returns to the Charity Commission as appropriate.
The Committee consists of three independent representatives, Chair, Treasurer and Secretary together with the Group Scout Leader, individual section leaders (if opted to take on the responsibility) and community and parent representatives. The committee usually meets around four times a year.
Members of the committee complete ‘Essential Information for Executive Committee’ and ‘General Data Protection Regulations’ training within the first five months of joining the committee.
The committee exists to support the Group Scout Leader in meeting the responsibilities of the appointment and is responsible for:

The raising of funds and the administration of Group finance

The insurance of persons, property and equipment

Group public occasions

Assisting in the recruitment of leaders and other adult support

Appointing any sub committees that may be required

Appointing Group Administrators and Advisors other than those who are elected.
Risk and Internal Control
The Group has in place systems of internal controls that are designed to provide reasonable assurance against material mismanagement or loss, these include two signatories for all payments and comprehensive insurance policies to ensure that insurable risks are covered.
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES The Purpose of Scouting
Scouting exists to actively engage and support young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society.
The Values of Scouting
As Scouts we are guided by these values: Integrity – we act with integrity; we are honest, trustworthy and loyal. Respect – we have self-respect and respect for others. Care – we support others and take care of the world in which we live. Belief – we explore our faiths, beliefs and attitudes.
Co-operation – we make positive difference; we co-operate with others and make friends.
The Scout Method
Scouting takes place when young people, in partnership with adults, work together based on the values of Scouts and:

The Group meets the Charity Commission’s public benefit criteria under both the advancement of education and the advancement of citizenship or community development headings.
ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE
Having been appointed as Group Scout Leader from 1 January 2020, you can imagine my sadness and disappointment as the pandemic plunged the UK and Scouting into a series of lockdowns and restrictions which we are only just seeing lifted.
Not only did the pandemic crush our plans for activities and camps, it also hit our membership numbers hard and we also lost some of our valued leaders too. Just at a time when we planned to work together after changes within the Group in 2019, everything was put on hold and condense our sections rather than get them back up to strength.
But 2020 was the year when we also learned to do things differently. Our leaders have been amazing, as your praise, compliments and thank yous have demonstrated. We were ahead of many schools in organising activities over Zoom and with your help as parents and carers we have some incredible achievements to look back on ranging from cooking and camping in your own back garden to designing paper aeroplanes and flying them as part of the Air Activities badge. Meanwhile, one of our Cub packs was able to run a Summer programme almost completely outdoors. The Scout programme has always encouraged flexibility and innovation and last year our leaders took it to a completely new dimension…and made it enormous fun.
So THANK YOU to our leaders, Executive, occasional helpers, supporters and you as parents and carers. We really couldn’t have done it, nor would we still be here without all of you.
Looking forward, we have to recognise that we are going to be living with the virus for some time yet and things will continue to be different, or as someone described it to me recently, a “newer normal”. What we have learned in the last year to 18 months will, in true Scouting style, help us to “be prepared”. But we are going to need more help if we are to continue the tradition of 113 years of Scouting at 4[th] Worth and teach life skills to current and future generations. So please, think about what you might be able to do, to give something back or to pay it forward. And get in touch – email is best to gsl@4thworthscouts.org.uk.
Maybe you have a skill or can provide an activity, or perhaps you would be able to volunteer as an occasional helper one evening a month. For me it started with offering to help put up some tents for a Cub camp. That will have been 20 years ago, next year! I look forward to hearing from you.

Hudson, Mackenzie & Nelson Beaver Colonies
Numbers in beavers are still doing very well despite the hit of Covid we are running at full capacity and is not expect a decline in this at all. We are still in a back log of cub age Beavers needing to move up but this was expected following the district wide ban on moving to other groups. We have seen an increase in Beavers interested in joining which have been sent to the district waiting list.
Tuesday and Saturday Beaver groups remain closed until such time we find volunteers to run these and when we have enough Beavers to warrant opening these groups again.
Connor continues to run Beaver colony admin but can only attend Beaver meetings every so often due to being away with uni. George Bowron will be starting uni in September which will mean he will also only be at meetings on the odd occasion.
Our planning meeting is scheduled for Friday 10th Sept so we will share our programme with you when this has been completed.
We would like to have a Beaver sleepover next year around May time. Especially now being in our green status and listening to the young people’s feedback, we would like to do an outdoor camp in tents for the sleepover next year. At this time we have no plans to ask the Exec for Beaver tents until we know the first camp hasn’t failed and we need to revert back to being an indoor sleepover.
I would also like to propose the idea of a Christmas sleepover for the Beavers early December. This will also get our Beavers who have missed out on nights away over the last 1.5 years to achieve their Bronze CSA.
Keneu Cub Pack
During the year we have held a scavenger hunt around the Town Centre, did a night hike in October along Worth Way, had a coaching session at the Tennis club, did fire lighting, outdoor cooking and learnt foreign ‘social distance’ games at the hut, completed crafts for Remembrance Day and Christmas, and made model shelters, where the cubs let their imaginations go wild.
In total 60 plus challenge and activity badges have been achieved, including 5 Silver Chief Scouts Awards. Well done to all with your achievements in what has been another difficult year.
We would like to thank all the Parents and families for all the support that has been given to the pack and on a personal note I would like to thank all the leaders for all the help that they have given to help achieve this.

Where do we start?
Back in February 2020, we just managed to get our Winter break in London. March 2020 was the start of lockdown – we had just planted up violas for Mothers’ day so Harrison and I arranged for parents to come to the car park to pick them up. In March, we also said goodbye to Dexter and passed on his badges as he went on to Scouts.
Then we didn’t have much contact apart from sending badge work out by post, but in June. Carol set us up on Zoom. We did quite well and had about 14 cubs. We managed a few badges; Chef, Gardeners, Air Activities, Collectors and Book Readers. On Zoom we had the Poem Man, Air Ambulance, Birds of Prey, Remembrance Services’ we made Christingles, carved pumpkins and cooked pancakes.
In April 2021, Milton joined Rann on Zoom and I invested Seb online. In May, we went back to Cubs outside and split for two weeks fire lighting and Milton Mount Walk Tree Trail. In June I invested 8 beavers and then…BANG! And we were all back on Zoom. On our last night, the Cubs cooked a sausage. We said goodbye to Jacob and Ruari moving up to Scouts. Sadly, we didn’t achieve any Silver awards but we managed a lot of badges and challenge work.
Thanks to all the Leaders. We pulled together to run a good programme and a big Thank You to Harrison who did all the emails and Carol and Harrison who delivered all the Christmas goodies and Christingles. We also say goodbye to Katie and Megan, with thanks for al their hard work and with our best wishes for their futures.

Martletts Scout Troop
It’s been another strange year for Scouts with a lot of online meetings taking place instead of face-to-face meetings. However, we did manage to return to face to face for several meetings and Scouts were excited to get back together again. They took part in several different activities including shelter building at Stanford, fire lighting, a local photo challenge and the town centre challenge. More recently, over the summer break, a few Scouts volunteered at a charity fun day to complete part of their World Challenge badge.
Although we haven’t been able to meet in person as often as we would have liked over the last year, being online hasn’t stopped Scouts taking part in a varied range of activities over Zoom. They’ve played several games based on classic and modern TV shows, helped to navigate lost Leaders back to the HQ and of course we’ve had a few quizzes, including one where Scouts themselves set everyone a few questions each. In addition, we’ve done a few cooking activities, which encouraged Scouts to get in the kitchen and get creative, with some interesting and great looking results. Although Leaders don’t get to try them, they also don’t have to worry about cleaning up, so it’s not all bad! To celebrate the end of term, Scouts chose to have a Zoom movie night where they voted on a film to watch and did so together.
We’ve also had a number of Scouts complete their Chief Scout Gold Awards before they moved on to Explorers. This is always a great achievement at any time, but more so this year with the added challenge of having to finish badges off independently and be supported online rather than working as a Troop. There are also several Scouts who are well on track to complete their awards within the next few months, which again is a great achievement for them.
We’re looking forward to getting back to regular in person meetings going forward and working on those skills that we haven’t been able to for some time. We’re hoping to be able to start participating in some of the Troop’s regular events and camps too in 2022.
Finally, we like to offer a big thank you to all of our parents, who have been brilliant in their support over the last year. From getting things together for Zoom meetings to making sure that Scouts arrive at in person meetings at the correct time and place, their support has been invaluable in allowing us to continue to offer as much as we can to our Scouts.

The succession of lockdowns and local restrictions have hampered our normal fundraising activities, however our sincere thanks go to Eileen Barber who has run two enormously successful raffles raising over £700.
We’re hoping to reinstate some or all of our usual events in the Autumn Term and look forward to your support.
Shooting
While many of our activities have been very successfully run online, sadly shooting is one which we can only run at the Scout Hut. Closures during the year have meant no activity for all of that time, but with all activity now being opened up, Peter Raine is preparing to resume this very popular activity again very soon.

4[th] Worth Scout Group 100 Club
As part of the Group’s fund raising efforts, the Supporters Committee run a 100 club. With all other fund-raising on hold as a consequence of the pandemic, we’d like to make a special plea to you to join at a cost of just £12 per year.
A monthly draw is held with prizes of £15, £10, and £5 for 10 months of the year and £50, £30, and £20 for draws in June and December. Winning payments, at present are sent to your home address by cheque.
Membership runs from July to June the following year, but if you wish to join part way through the year payment will be pro-rata for the remainder of the year. We would prefer payments to be made to the bank direct, but will accept cash or cheque to join and then full payment the following July, either by Standing Order or Direct Debit through your bank account.
