The trustees present their report and the financial statements for the year ended 31 August 2025. 

## **Objectives and Activities** 

## **Aims and Objectives** 

The charity’s objectives are: 

To provide access to Asian culture through the art of Kathakali, the classical dance drama of Kerala South India to advance the understanding of Indian traditions and people through the arts. 

Funds are restricted for specific projects that fulfill the aims of the charity - see Restricted Funds Sheet attached in furtherance these objects are to bring communities together, encourage racial harmony, support people from ethnic minorities, increase understanding, awareness and enjoyment of Asian culture, tradition and the arts. 

## **Public Benefit** 

The charity's objectives are to advance education for the public benefit by the promotion of the arts. To present, promote, organize, provide, manage and produce dramas, dance, operas, films, broadcasts, concerts, musical pieces, entertainments, exhibitions, tutorials, seminars, courses and workshops, whether on any premises of the company or elsewhere. 

The trustees confirm that they have complied with the requirements of Section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit. 

## **Achievements and Performance** 

## **Main Achievements** 

To achieve these aims we engage highly experienced specialists with the skills to plan and deliver workshops, performances, exhibitions and training to advance our aims and objectives. 

The charity has delivered workshops, solo performances and a research project in the UK and India. These activities were attended by a total 9,560 people of all ages, abilities and locations. 

## The aims: 

- Expose people of all ages, cultural backgrounds and abilities to Asian theatre. 

- Take Asian culture to rural, urban and inner city areas. 

- Advocate a greater understanding of world theatre. 

- Engage the skills of world-class specialists to deliver the projects. 

## **Additional Note** 

Most of the year has been spent creating new projects and applying for funding. 

## **Heritage Lottery Fund** 

In September 2023 we obtained a Grant from the National lottery Heritage Fund to plan and deliver a project called Kerala Comes to Whitehill and Bordon 

The project aimed to celebrate the art, culture and people born in Kerala and settled in the UK. The intention was to increase awareness of Kerala culture, enable people from Kerala to share their heritage within the wider community, feel more appreciated, valued and increase their feeling of belonging. 

2023 – 2024 was mainly planning the project, publicity, marketing and delivering workshops and training in the community. In September 2024 we aimed to deliver the following: 

• Install an exhibition of costumes and traditional Kerala dress accompanied by performances and master class workshops. 

• A Kathakali UK Tour. 

Performances and master class workshops linked to the heritage project: 

In addition, we aimed to deliver a Kathakali UK Tour taking Kerala culture into villages, towns and cities reaching a wide range of communities. Install an exhibition at The Phoenix theatre & Arts Centre, bringing 3 x Kathakali artists from Kerala to the UK. The accompanying workshops created a deeper understanding and enjoyment of Kathakali and Kerala culture for schools, colleges and community groups.

## **Arts Council of England** 

Our application to the Arts Council of England was not successful so we continued the tour with the income from the promoters and reduced the number of artists to 5. 

## **Solo Performances & Workshops** 

The project consisting of planning and workshops. 

Based on the success of the 2023 – 2024 projects we were requested to plan and deliver a similar project in Milton Keynes and Liverpool. 

In January 2025 we began arranging a tour of theatres, schools, colleges, art centers and museums. This involved applying for funding the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Arts Council of England. 

In September 2025 were informed that our application to the Arts Council of England was a success. In October 2025 we were informed that the application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund was also a success. This funding will enable our projects to be planed and delivered until May 2027 to include a Kathakali UK Tour of 11 artists, an exhibition of costumes and photographs, the creation of a new story and restoration of our Kathakali costumes that will eventually join the South Asian Costume collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

## **Artistic Review** 

We achieved the following: 

• Consulted artists, promoters, theatres, museums and schools to design a project celebrating the heritage of Kerala southern India through workshops, performances and exhibitions. 

- Delivered 1 x exhibitions, 36 workshops, 10 x demonstrations and 23 performances. 

- Brought hundreds of people into the Museum of Croydon for the first time, especially the Kerala community. This highlighted the heritage of southern India within the local populatin. 

- Researched the link between Kathakali and the temple culture of Kerala. 

- Created and launched a new web page dedicated to Kathakali sign language. People are now studying all over the world. 

- Made educational films to enhance the workshops and performances. 

- Received funding from the ACE for a touring project consisting of performances and workshops to highlight the right of woman and girls to be safe and respected. 

- Trained in working with vulnerable young people. 

- Assessed how we could relate to our audiences better by asking them what they wanted from Kathakali. The Q&A`s worked very well at the end of the show and helped people to relate to Kathakali on a deeper level. 

- Although we invested in social media, marketing and publicity our audiences were lower than anticipated.

## **Governing Document** 

The company is registered as a charitable company limited by guarantee and was set up by a Memorandum of Association on the 17 August 1994 and registered as a charity at the same date 

The charity is managed by an elected Board of Directors with a Chair person and secretary. 

To carry out the aims of the charity the Board engage appropriate specialists to manage and deliver specific projects based on their skills and experiences under our equal opportunities policy. 

None of the trustees has any beneficial interest in the company. All of the trustees are members of the company and guarantee to contribute £1 in the event of a winding up.

This report has been prepared in accordance with the special provisions relating to companies subject to the small companies regime within Part 15 of the Companies Act 2006.

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31 August 2025. 

## **Responsibilities and Basis of Report** 

As the charity trustees of the Company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law), you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 (“the 2006 Act”). 

Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity’s accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the 2011 Act’). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act. 

## **Independent Examiner's Statement** 

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe: 

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or 

2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or 3. the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair view' which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or 

4. the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102). 

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

For the year ending 31 August 2025 the charitable company was entitled to exemption from audit under section 477 of the Companies Act 2006 relating to small companies. 

The members have not required the charitable company to obtain an audit in accordance with section 476 of the Companies Act 2006. 

The trustees acknowledge their responsibilities for complying with the requirements of the Act with respect to accounting records and the preparation of accounts.

## 1. **General Information** 

Kala Chethena Kathakali Troupe is a company limited by guarantee, incorporated in England & Wales, registered number 02938525 and registered charity number 1039412. The registered office is . 

## 2. **Accounting Policies** 

## 2.1. **Basis of Preparation of Financial Statements** 

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)", Financial Reporting Standard 102 "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" and the Companies Act 2006. 

The charitable company is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102. 

## 2.2. **Incoming Resources** 

Income is recognised when the charity is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have been met, the amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received. 

Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations are recognised once the charity has been notified of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferral of the amount. Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid or deeds of covenant is recognised at the time of the donation. 

Turnover is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable and represents amounts receivable for goods and services provided in the normal course of business, net of discounts, VAT and other sales related taxes. 

## 2.3. **Resources Expended** 

Grant funding on activities is recognised on a basis that matches the grant received to their respective expenditure. 

## 2.4. **Cash and Cash Equivalents** 

Cash and cash equivalents are basic financial assets and include cash in hand and deposits held at call with banks, other shortterm highly liquid investments that mature in no more than three months from the date of acquisition and are readily convertible to a known amount of cash with insignificant risk of change in value, and bank overdrafts.

## 10. **Transactions with Trustees** 

None of the trustees received any remuneration or any other benefits from an employment with the charity or a related entity during the current or previous year. 

No trustee expenses have been incurred. 

## 11. **Related Party Disclosures** 

There have been no related party transactions in the reporting period that require disclosure. 

## 12. **Company limited by guarantee** 

The company is limited by guarantee and has no share capital. 

Every member of the company undertakes to contribute to the assets of the company, in the event of a winding up, such an amount as may be required not exceeding £1.
