## Independent Examiner’s Report on the Accounts 

Report to the Trustees of Cleveland Philharmonic Choir Music Society (Registered Charity number 1039092) on the accounts for the year ended 31 July 2023 (attached) 

## Respective Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner 

As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts; you consider that the audit requirements of s.144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act) do not apply. It is my responsibility to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under s.145 of the Act, whether particular matters have come to my attention. 

## Basis of Independent Examiner's Report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts with those records. It also includes consideration ofany unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you, as trustees, concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts. 

## Independent Examiner’s Statement 

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements: 

- to keep accounting records in accordance with s.130 of the Act 

- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Act 

have not been met, or to which in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Cleveland Philharmonic Choir Music Society was established by Deed of Constitution in 1982 (amended 1994, 2001, 2005 and 2014). The registered charity number is 1039092. 

## Trustees

## Objectives 

The object of the music society is to promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of the art and science of music in all its aspects by the presentation of public concerts and recitals; and for the general purposes of such charitable bodies or for such other purposes as shall be exclusively charitable as the Trustees may from time to time decide. 

## Review of activities 

During the year, the music society staged four concerts. 

- e Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music and Rutter Mass of the Children on 19 November 2022 at Middlesbrough Town Hall 

- e Elgar Dream of Gerontius on 26 February 2023 at Sage Gateshead 

- ¢ Handel Messiah (Parts 2 and 3) on 25 March 2023 at Stockton Baptist Church e ‘Sail the Seven Seas’ on 24 June 2023 at St Hilda’s Church, Hartlepool Headland 

The choir also sang at the switching on of the Christmas lights in Stockton on Tees, and held an open rehearsal/performance on the Tuesday following the Coronation of King Charles III. 

The music society is committed to encouraging young people to sing, particularly classical music. The choir has established a youth choir for children aged 8 — 14 years which benefits from a wide musical education, including reading music, and regularly sings in three or more parts; it also supports boys in continuing to sing as their voices change. The young singers are given performance opportunities with the adult choir. They also have their own public concert programme. These concerts also give solo opportunities to promising young instrumentalists and singers. 

Participation in the choir is open at all, subject to a voice test by the Music Director. Adjustments are made and assistance is given to allow all those accepted to participate fully. 

The choir has a policy of, where appropriate, using excellent soloists who were nurtured and encouraged in the Tees Valley area. 



## Financial review 

The music society receives monies from ticket sales for their concerts, however the cost of staging the concerts usually exceeds the income. Consequently, the music society is dependent on annual subscriptions from choir members. Donations are received from “Friends” of the choir who support their activities. The music society is grateful for all the financial support it receives. 

The music society had a deficit of expenditure over income of £15,614 for the year ended 31 July 2023 and had Reserves of £21,904 at the Balance Sheet date. This secures the activities of the choir for the foreseeable future. 

## Plans for the future 

The music society management committee usually plan concerts for the following three years.
