Weald Primary School PTA 1 September 2022 to 31 August 2023 Treasurer’s Report

We have had a good year of fundraising, with £16,002 paid out to the school. The bulk of this – – money £12,196 has gone to covering the hire cost of both minibuses, and it is worth emphasising just how much a difference these buses make to the programme of education that the school can offer. Without them, the range of educational opportunities that the children take part in would be much less rich and diverse than we are currently used to.

T his year’s figures are really a tale of two halves, and it is important to realise that they are not actually as healthy as they may look on first glance. On the one hand, the bank account holds £30,000, we have donated £16,000 to the school and have still managed to run a surplus of £4363; however, this is predicated on the sizeable and unexpected match-funding of £8725 that we received for last year’s summer fete (i.e. 2022). Without this extra amount, we would instead be looking at an operating deficit of £4362.

My concerns echo those of the C hair’s. The fundraising activities of the school have always been carried out with passion and enthusiasm, I believe, because the very act of taking part in them with everyone else is fun and sociable. This is certainly why I was keen to get involved with the PTA: as way of making friends and getting more involved in the school and village community. This year has seen a marked decrease in the enthusiasm for our social events, culminating in the loss of the St Julians Christmas party which for so many years was the high-point of the social calendar. There will be many reasons for these shifts in attitude, but I fear that the resulting drop in fundraising and a diminishing sense of community amongst the school parents and staff has already begun: it is borne out in this year’s financial figures.

The challenges ahead, I believe, will involve regalvanising the extraordinary community of parents and staff that we have here at Weald. Since I have been involved, the PTA has always tried to keep requests for help from school staff to a minimum; your job after all is to teach our children. I think that now that there may be a place for more leadership from the school itself, to do whatever it takes to get our wonderful community back on track, talking to each other and enjoying doing things together that are to the benefit of all of us, most of all our children.

Finally, my sincere thanks to my fellow committee members Kathryn Ashwell, Catherine Coffey, Nikki Towler and Elizabeth Bull, to David Pyle, Cathrin Beddoe and all staff at the school, and to everyone who has volunteered and contributed this year.
