MARKET RASEN NEW LIFE CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP TRUST

CHARITABLE ACTIVTIES

In what has been as unprecedented decade so far with both national and global challenges, we are thankful that as a local church there have been many opportunities during 2022 for Market Rasen New Life to continue to share the truth of the gospel and to relieve need and thus continue to fulfil our charitable objectives .

Two main preaching series based on John’s Gospel (Jan – July) and The Sermon on the Mount (Sept and ongoing into 2023) have been our focus for Sunday gatherings with Mike May (Senior Leader) involving 7 others from church family on the preaching team including releasing new people in their gifting in this area. A main theme running throughout the year has been “How We Live Matters” . We have been blessed and refreshed too via our links with the Ground Level Network with 6 visiting speakers joining us on Sundays during the year. Nine people from church family went along to Swanwick Leaders Conference in April including 5 for the first time and 7 of our Musicians and Tech Team benefitted from the Worship Encounter Conference held at Alive Central Lincoln in June.

Prayer underpins all we do together and we began 2022 with a significant 40 day season of Prayer and Fasting . Weekly Monday evening corporate prayer has remained on Zo om and it is encouraging that those living in villages can ‘come along’ more readily and along with our faithful Prayer Coordinators (Sheila Griffiths, Christine Jewitt and Jane Bridger) several others have taken a lead at these meetings. Similarly continuing a Zoom link on Sundays has enabled those who are unwell or away from home to join the 40-50 of us who gather in person on Sundays as well as allowing visitors to dip into church which they can also do via connecting with our You Tube Sermon Channel and via our website.

At the start of 2022 two new believers were baptised and a fresh Alpha Course began in September hosted at the Church Centre by Christine & Steve Jewitt and Estelle Forsythe with a team of helpers and kitchen crew too. Three of this Alpha group are now finding fellowship by going along to one of our midweek Connect Groups . Outreach takes place in many ways including through our monthly Men’s Breakfast & Evening Chats now coordinated by Louis Mullaney and through our free Friday Morning Coffee and Chat sessions which often draw in 20+ people from the local community. (now extended to Wednesdays too during the winter open as a Warm Space )

Our Church Centre building has been invaluable for the continued and expanding work of the Food Bank with approx. 125 parcels packed per month for people in need in Market Rasen and the locality. By the end of 2022, 90 households were supported each month via our Food Bank including 80 children. Run by a volunteer team of 15, headed up by Katy Hiley since May, we have been extremely thankful to a faithful God for ongoing generous financial provision and food donations from a variety of sources including individuals, local organisations, local businesses and via local supermarkets. Links with local schools and the Town & District Council have developed too especially with regard to the Household Support Fund and the distribution of Food Vouchers. A substantial donation of £29k of restricted funding for our Food Bank from the wind-up of Market Rasen Development Trust has helped us sustain and expand this much needed service in our locality. By the end of 2022 a larger Food Bank storage room had been designed by our Building Team and the practicalities implemented early in 2023 by Richard Findlay (our part time Church Centre worker). At Christmas 70 special gift parcels were distributed to families and individuals. During 2023, it is envisaged consideration will be given to whether to develop a community grocery.

For a small church a lot is happening and we know we serve a big God who provides for his work. In May, a decision was made for an expanded Core Leadership Team of seven to share responsibilities for moving things forward with a view to releasing new & younger people in their gifting. Mike May as senior leader heads up this team which meets weekly. John Lechler took on liaising with the Building Team to continue refurbishment projects and seek possible grants, Katy Hiley took on the Food Bank and Paul has overseen our Centre Point children’s team. Martin Forsythe has also joined this team as well as Jen May, who leads our Safeguarding Team as well as our musicians and Rhona Sheppard who continues to coordinate much of the administration of the church and its day to day running.

Centre Point , our Sunday children’s work has seen 25 different young people come along to enjoy Bible-based fun. The children have benefitted from the teaching and kindness of Diane Goulden, Andrea Fletcher, James Burdett and helpers. ( from May 2023 Diane will take over full responsibility for Centre Point from Paul Hiley who has overseen it for a year)

CHARITABLE ACTIVTIES

In the midst of all this, encouraging new things have happened too. Dawn Benson headed up a very well attended outreach Murder Mystery Evening & Dinner in May and Andrea Fletcher organised our participation in Tearfund’s Quiz evening ( a national event) in November which raised over £400 for Tearfund’s work in some of the poorest countries in the world.

We see developing relationships locally as well as regionally as key. 2022 saw the re-launched of shared lunches alongside All-Age services . Good Friday saw an outdoor witness service around the cross in the Market Place organised by the 5 local churches working together. And in August a brand new regional event ‘Arise’ held at The Storehouse in Skegness (a Ground Level church) proved to be refreshing, prophetic and uplifting weekend celebration and also an opportunity for 2 of our musicians to serve on team and another to help with Tech. In September, we launched Praise and Worship evening on Fridays to be held every 2 months.

We have enjoyed developing positive links brought through the use of our Church Centre by community groups and a quick count up revealed that over 500 people a week use the building. Praise God! Groups using the centre include We Are With You ( Drugs Counselling service), Young Carers, U3A, Guides and Brownies etc. We currently have two hard working part time employees (Richard Findlay Maintenance & Tech 14 hours ) and Sue Jewitt (Finance 6 hours ). 2023 will see careful consideration regarding planning a sustainable way forward to run the Church Centre and other aspects of church life as things continue to grow. We are thankful too for hundreds of hours of servant-hearted voluntary work from people in church family.

It is a real privilege to share the gospel in word and deed , and we are excited that we have people who are keen to explore developing a new Youth Group for teenagers in 2023 and also an evening Night Light Café in liaison with the NHS for those struggling with mental health issues.

Caring and encouraging one another involves us in pastoral matters including those bereaved. Three people who were closely connected with New Life passed from this life during 2022: Stephen Baker, Mike Maw and Ivan Schappo. We have been able too to help those with financial difficulties with both counsel or practical help.

We have been grateful for the ongoing wisdom and input from our Trustees ( currently Geoff Taylor as Chair, Norman Palmer, Mike May and Rhona Sheppard). During 2022, one Trustee, John Cawdell moved away from the area and resigned in October. He has been replaced by Estelle Forsythe and Sheila Griffiths.

We are pleased to report that we have been able to meet our charitable objectives to share the gospel and to relieve need as reflected in this report and our 2022 annual accounts. Although regular giving and Sunday offerings have been below what was expected, we have thankfully been able to meet all our running costs and to maintain our reserves at the advised level. A special Gift Day in September has enabled us to pay off a considerable amount of the Church Centre mortgage . In faith, we have continued to give generously to other Christian ministries on a monthly basis: to Ground Level, Betel, Open Doors, Tearfund, Care for the Family and the Christian Institute and to have a special offering for those suffering because of the war in Ukraine (via Tearfund DEC). 2023 has already seen some new people added to our number, and despite sharp increases in utility costs, with faith and careful stewarding of resources we expect to be able to continue to implement all that God is calling us to do and be.

May more of Your Kingdom Come, Lord! And more of you will be done on earth as in heaven.

CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES

RESERVES POLICY

Our reserves policy aims to be both biblical and practical. We neither want to accumulate or hoard funds for no reason nor do we want to be irresponsible with the financial resources God has provided us with. Rather we want to prepare our annual budget and steward finances wisely in line with our 2 charitable aims a) to advance the Christian faith b) to relieve need. Furthermore, we want to trust God for his ongoing provision for the extension of his Kingdom.

We currently regard it prudent to have a reserve fund of £20,000

Our reserves will be kept in an Instant Access Deposit Account (Cooperative Bank)

This policy will be reviewed annually by Leadership and Trustees. Next review October 2023
