## **REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES (CONTINUED)**

During the year 2021, there have been opportunities for Market Rasen New Life Church to **share the truth of the gospel and to relieve need** and thus we have continued to fulfil our charitable objectives.

Despite the continued challenges of Covid-19, a key 18 month long **preaching series** was launched in January based on **John’s gospel** and 2 **Alpha** courses were held during the year, including a successful online Alpha starting in February. Along with Alpha, Sunday Worship Gatherings and weekly online Prayer Meetings drew in newcomers. Sunday gatherings on **Zoom** were well attended by an average of 40 people per week and continued online in an intentionally interactive way **until June 2021** with recordings made available for others on You Tube for those unable to attend and for outreach as well as on CD for those without any internet access. Our **midweek Community Groups** kept groups of six connected and cared for in various ways as we “worshipped through the winter” of 2020 & into the spring of 2021 together. From **April onwards** we were able to open up the Church Centre for weekly **Coffee & Chat** drop in sessions initially outside on the grassed area in groups of six and later inside in the Eden Room as the year progressed and restrictions lifted. These times have proved to be a great meeting place for church family and for the local community alike with a wide age range of people coming along.

**In-person Sunday Services** re-started in **late June** with much rejoicing as **3 people** from the online Alpha course were **baptised** . **Centre Point** for children on Sundays was able to re-start over the summer of 2021 with several new children coming along regularly and whilst weekly numbers are usually in single figures, overall **23 different children** have been welcomed into Centre Point between July and December 2021 to enjoy Bible-based fun and activities. Older church family members were able to complete the mid-week **Omega Course** sessions in June and July which they had started pre- lockdown 2 in 2020. Monthly **Men’s Breakfasts** re-started in October and have provided opportunities for both fellowship and outreach too with 15-20 men enjoying time together each month **.**

Our Church Centre building has been invaluable for the **continued and expanding work of Food Bank throughout the year with 80 - 130** parcels per month provided in Market Rasen and several surrounding villages. Run by a **volunteer team** , we have been thankful to a faithful God for ongoing **financial provision** and **food donations in kind** from a variety of sources including church family, individuals in the community as well as substantial support from local businesses, organisations and via local supermarkets. We have been able to provide some utility support and furniture/white goods provision as well as giving some informal help with wider financial issues or to point people towards help from other agencies. The coordination of this **ongoing** work has involved developing stronger links with relevant personnel from local schools, town, district and county councils too. At **Easter** time we were able to join with the Town Partnership by helping to deliver 150 special gift bags to older and isolated people and at **Christmas** our own Food Bank Team delivered **35 Christmas Food Parcels** to families and **30 Gift Bags** to individuals for which we received some financial support via Ground Level Network through the national “Love Your Neighbour” scheme as well as from individual donations from Church family. Currently, our Food Bank **is open every weekday morning,** with ongoing regular reviews for the operational way forward to sustain this work into the future whilst it is needed.

The **second Alpha course of the year** was held at the Church Centre where people could meet and eat together as well as explore the meaning of life. It was a real joy too to be able to hold **2 church family weddings** at the Church Centre during 2021. The year was marked by sadness as well as joy. On April 21st, **Rose Clarke** passed from her earthly life at the age of 60 and is sadly missed by her husband of 35 years, Andy, their family, church family and many many others too. In her 5 years in Market Rasen, Rose impacted the lives of many with her never ending kindnesses and practical help in so many aspects of church and community life. Rose was full of faith and fortitude and we were privileged to have known her and we were honoured to host a moving Celebration of Rose’s Life in August for family and friends at the Church Centre.

From midsummer onwards we were able to serve several community organisations through the provision of our building for **room hire** including We Are With You (an essential drugs counselling service). Young Carers, U3A and other groups. **Refurbishment** of the Church Centre has continued with improved double glazing in upstairs room, better ventilation provision in the hall and a refurbished bathroom upstairs. The latter work as well as the ongoing maintenance & care of the Church Centre has largely been undertaken by **Richard Findlay** whom we employed on a part-time basis from May 2021 onwards. Richard also serves our growing team of **musicians** led by Jen May and he heads up our Tech Team too.

**Developing teams and releasing gifting** remains a priority and although Covid times have been challenging new developments during 2021 included a new team of **Prayer Coordinators** (Sheila Griffiths, Christine Jewitt and Jane Bridger) who communicate regularly with church family and lead prayer meetings along with others. Prayer underpins all that we do! Mike May heads up the **Preaching Team** ; during 2021, eight people from church family were involved in our preaching programme and we are grateful too for input from Ground

Level Network friends into our Sunday Preaching from 5 people during the year ( 2 via Zoom and 3 in person). The **Media Team** (Sue Jewitt, Andrea Fletcher, Richard Findlay and Rhona Sheppard) worked together to launch a **new website** in February 2021. A regular weekly volunteer **Cleaning Team** has developed and 6 church members undertook **Food Safety Course** in 2021.

Our friends Ground Level from Caistor Springs Church very kindly financed the **‘Try Praying’** initiative for us early in 2021 by making a banner and booklets freely available. Market Rasen and Middle Rasen churches were able to work together from September-December on an outdoor **Nativity Mime** in Market Rasen Market Place and to share the real meaning of Christmas with the community.

Despite all the changing & sometimes challenging circumstances during 2021, our **vision and values** remain the same. As God’s image bearers, we are committed to making the gospel of Jesus Christ known in our locality surrounding Market Rasen and we are encouraged that our growing numbers are well spread across this large area of villages and hamlets. Currently about 70 people are connected fairly regularly with Market Rasen New Life. We aim to be ‘building community and demonstrating life’ in our day to day lives and to be a **beacon of light** to those we meet. In the midst of the shaking and turmoil of world events of this decade, we were encouraged by Mike May at the outset of 2021 to **navigate our way forward** carefully keeping 4 things in balance: **Word, Spirit, Truth and Grace** as well to continue to ‘be careful how we **listen** ’ along the way.

As we move into 2022, a **new church leadership structure** is envisaged to pave the way for the next chapter of Market Rasen New Life Church to help develop teams & to release gifting for existing and new areas of God’s Kingdom building work.

We have been grateful for the ongoing wisdom and input from our 5 **Trustees** . In September 2021 Val Blundell stepped back from this role as she moved on to another church, but we are grateful to welcome the expertise of John Cawdell as a new trustee from March 2022. The Trustees have approved the appointment of Sue Jewitt from January 2022 as part time **Finance Officer** and office assistant.

We are very grateful to our generous God and pleased to report that we have been able to **meet our charitable objectives** to share the gospel and to relieve need as reflected in our 2021 annual accounts. Whilst there has been some reduction in expected income from regular giving and Sunday offerings (in part due to Covid) we have thankfully been able to meet all our running costs and to maintain our reserves at the advised level. In faith we have continued to give generously to Ground Level, Betel, Open Doors, Tearfund, Care for the Family and other Christian ministries.
