Structure, Governance, and Management

Burton-on-the-Wolds Pre-school Playgroup is a member of the Pre-School Learning Alliance and is governed by its Constitution.

The overall management and control of the Pre-school rests with the individual members of its Management Committee. As well as being responsible for the management of the Preschool the Committee members are also the Charity Trustees of the Pre-school.

Committee members are recruited in accordance with the Pre-School Learning Alliance constitution.

Objectives, Activities, Achievements and Performance

The aims of the Pre-school are to enhance the development and education of children primarily under statutory school age by encouraging parents to understand and provide for the needs of their children through community groups by:

Offering appropriate play, education and care facilities, family learning and extended hours groups, together with the right of parents to take responsibility for and to become involved in the activities of the groups, ensuring that such groups offer opportunities for all children whatever their race, culture, religion, means or ability.
Encouraging the study of the needs of such children and their families and promoting public interest in and recognition of such needs in the local areas.
Instigating and adhering to and furthering the aims and objects of the Pre-school Learning Alliance.

In shaping our objectives and planning our activities, the Trustees have considered the es for which the Charity was set up.

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

39 children on roll as of May 2026
Went through a round of recruitment and now employ eight permanent members of staff, one on a fixed-term basis (ending July 8[th] 2026), two bank staff.
We currently have three staff completing apprenticeships for Level 3 qualification. Super successful pre-school outing to Manor Farm in May 2025, which we will do again this year.

Plans for the Future

We will continue to offer high-quality provision in line with our objectives, to a diversity of preschool age children. We will invest in staff development to support and enhance the service we provide. We will invest in learning resources to support our objectives and responsibilities. We will continue to build strong relationships with the village community.

Financial Review

The accounts for the year ending 31 March 2026 ended with a surplus of net receipts over payments of £5,053 (2025: surplus of £10,340).

Income in the period was mainly from government childcare funding £111,453 (2025: £90,482), parent fees £26,503 (2025: £32,425) and fundraising events £7,088 (2025: £9,015).

Total expenditure for the period was £143,544 (2025: £125,331).

Total unrestricted funds held at 31 March 2026 and available for use towards the general objectives of the charity were £65,155 (2025: £60,922).

Restricted funds held at 31 March 2026, which are to be used for the specific projects they were donated for, were £820 (2025: £nil).

Reserves Policy

The Prelevels have The management committee continues to work with the manager to determine suitable ways in which to spend/invest the surplus funds to further enhance the provision, in line with the Charitable Objectives and in support of the plans for the future. These include staff training including CPD between nearby village playgroups, supporting the Level 3 apprenticeships, in-house experiences (such as balance bike sessions) and outings for the children, key pieces of new equipment and investment in book-keeping software to assist the Treasurer.

Trustee Fees/Expenses

No payments were made to trustees during the period.

Trustees whose children are enrolled in the pre-school playgroup are liable to pay fees at the same rates, and on the same terms, as are applicable to all other parents.

statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).

The law applicable to charities in England & Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that period. In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to:

select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP 2019 (FRS 102);
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
state whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation.

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts Burton on the Wolds Pre-School Playgroup for the period ended 31 March 2026, which are set out on pages 7 to 10.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance

the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

(1) accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or

(2) that accounts do not accord with those records; or

(3) that accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
