Spelthorne Choral Society
Hon Patron: Anthea Lacey MBE Musical Director Sean Bui akin
– ANNUAL REPORT 1 August 2022 31 July 2023
Spelthorne Choral Society (hereafter known as “the Society”) is a registered charity, no. 1038485.
It is not a registered company. It can be contacted at info@spelthornechoralsociety.com and information about it can be obtained from its website at www.spelthornechoralsociety.com.
The Society’s objectives are set out in its governing document, known as the “Constitution”. This states that:
“The object of the Society is to study, rehearse and perform choral works in order to foster musical knowledge and appreciation.”
The Constitution was amended in order to restructure the committee. As a result the number of elected committee members and subsequently Trustees has reduced. The following were the Society’s Trustees for part or all of the period 1 August 2022 – 31 July 2023:
| Chair | Gillian Sloan |
|---|---|
| Deputy Chair | Janine Jones |
| Hon. Secretary | Peter Wood |
| Hon. Treasurer | Irene Smith |
| The following roles were filled by volunteers: | |
|---|---|
| Librarian | Jane Offler |
| Concert Manager | Gwen House |
| Box Office Manager | Sue Chorley |
| Soprano Part Representative | Birdy Thomas |
| Alto Part Representative | Bobby Walker |
| Tenor and Bass Part Representative | Peter Wood |
All trustees are members of the Society and give their time voluntarily and receive no remuneration or other benefits (save those benefits of membership afforded to every member of the Society).
In planning our activities for the year, we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our Committee meetings.
The focus of our activities remains the study, rehearsal and performance of choral works in order to foster musical knowledge and appreciation. This benefits people of all ages by developing their music reading skills, training their voices, improving their breathing and breath control through the respiratory exercise performed whilst singing, and providing regular opportunities to socialize with like-minded individuals in a friendly environment. A total of 45 members attended for some or all of the year.
We welcome people of all ages regardless of their personal background, faith, gender or personal circumstances. Although we currently do not audition prospective members, we do
Registered Charity Number: 1038485
Spelthorne Choral Society
expect members to maintain the standard required for public performance as our efforts all lead towards putting on four concerts a year.
These are some of the other public benefits provided by Spelthorne Choral Society:
-
A standard membership rate that is lower than the cost of most adult education courses.
-
Special discounted membership for adults who are out of work or retired.
-
Special discounted membership for persons aged 80 and above.
-
Free membership for young adults (i.e. under 25s) to encourage them to take an interest in classical choral music.
-
Public access to choral concerts that are more affordable than those provided by commercial entertainment providers.
-
Free concert tickets for accompanied under 16s to encourage them to take an interest in classical choral music.
-
Enhancing the cultural richness of the borough by performing classical choral works (the only local choir to do so).
-
In recognition of the Borough Council grant which funded its purchase, the Society is pleased to provide free temporary loan of its staging to similar groups within the Borough of Spelthorne, and to other local groups for a small donation.
In the furtherance of the Society’s object, we rehearsed and performed the following works with professional help from our Musical Director Sean Bui, and our Accompanist, Lindsay Bridgwater:
Saturday 12 November 2022
Haydn: Mass in Time of War Faure: Requiem
