Tatton Singers - Chairman's Annual Report 2024/25

Ladies & Gentlemen,

Another season of concerts are done, and we have had some fine singing moments.

As usual the musical aspects of the year I will leave for John (Powell) to comment on.

Starting with the positive things from our last season, I think it’s safe to say we have now cracked the intricacies of getting on and off the staging safely on concert day. This year we also reduced the use of paper cups thanks to Carol providing mugs for those who don’t bring their own.

It’s been pleasing to welcome new members who have joined the Tatton Singers since we restarted in September 2024 and increased numbers have many benefits, including increased revenue, added quality to our performances and it allows John to choose a wider range of works for us to get to grips with while providing quality music to the wider community

Our concerts had varying attendance figures. December and March saw bigger audiences than November and June. Bach and Handel are always popular. It’s always disappointing when we worked so hard but had fewer people to hear our performances and share in the joy of the music of Rossini and Tippet et al. Singing Day is a good source of income and made money for us this year. Again Handel and the Trumpeters helped the coffers!

The major challenges for us are most notably rising costs. Hiring the church, orchestra, piano, organ, organist, soloists, music, wine, juice, and glasses, makes concerts an expensive affair. This coming year is no exception with 2 orchestral concerts to mark our 50[th] anniversary year.

I’d like to take this opportunity to record my thanks to all the committee for their tireless hard work in keeping the Tatton singers functioning.

To Rosie, for keeping me on track, sourcing first aiders, taking minutes and keeping a record of attendance. She’s worked on throughout her recovery from surgery and was determined to be here for the start of term…you can’t keep a good woman down. Thank you Rosie.

Thanks to Celia, for continuing to manage the finances, paying the bills and we all sign up to gift aid!

Anne, for her efforts as choir librarian sourcing the right edition of a work by a particular publisher, without the text in English above the German words! Or something like that! Thank you for also hosting committee meetings and biscuits

Tania, for tickets, our social media presence on Facebook, and managing the QR code.

Paul, for managing the production of programmes complete with translations and words, the ongoing relationship with the Knutsford Guardian and the wonderful banner outside the police station.

Tom, for his role as a very able deputy and this year taking on the task of checking and examining the accounts with Celia. A formidable task.

I’d also like to thank your section reps, Susan, Daphne, Mike, and Matt, who work each week to check numbers, listen to your feedback and generally make the seating plan work for concert.

Tim for being an amazing accompanist, vocalist, piano and organ performer and Johns right hand man who manages to hear the dodgy notes in all the parts!

Finally, of course John, whose faith in us is undiminished as week by week he brings out the best in each of us and without whom we would not be stretched as we always are to reach a peak for 7.30 on concert evenings.

I’d also like to thank the people at St John’s with whom we work; Giles Shorrock, who arranges the chairs and puts up the curtain for the summer concert, so the sops are not blinded by the setting sun, which was very evident this year. Ruth Taylor, St Johns treasurer and Penny Langham, and Ruth Foster in the office who take care of all our bookings. I’d also like to thank those in the choir who continue to offer accommodation and hospitality to soloists.

We can look forward to our 2025/26 season with a real sense of pride in what we have achieved this last year. We have great music to look forward to starting with Cherubini and Gounod.

Thank you.

Sue Elves Chairman, Tatton Singers 16[th] September 2025
