SPENNYMOOR TOWN BAND

Charity number 1038058 Annual Report 2022

Introduction

A band in Spennymoor can be traced back to the 1870’s, following many name changes in 1983 the band were gifted a brand new set of instruments by Spennymoor Town Council. The band have been registered with the Charity Commission since 22 May 1994.

Aims

During the period Spennymoor Town Band kept to its commitments and acted responsibly in carrying out its charitable purposes for public benefit, as set out in the Charity Commission guidance. The Town band aims are to promote, improve, develop and maintain public education and appreciation of the art of brass band music in all its aspects by the playing of public brass band concerts, tuition in the playing of brass instruments and by other ways that the band determines from time to time. Due to the increased numbers in the Town and Youth band, and the requirement for some larger percussion instruments an extension to the bandroom by knocking down a wall is being considered.

Review of Year 2022

The band performed at the North of England Brass Band Championships in Durham in March 2022 and gained 4th place. The band have performed at many community events such as Spennymoor Gala, Durham Miners Gala, Remembrance service and parade and the Drum Head Service. The Town Band also held a Charity Concert in aid of the Spennymoor Town Mayor’s Charity – beneficiaries Mens Health and Moors in the Community.

Youth Band

In 1990 a Youth Band was formed to encourage complete beginners of all ages and those who haven’t played for years by providing tuition, instrument loan and ensemble playing all at no cost to the individual. After a lull in membership due to the COVID pandemic, following the appointment of Michael Franey as tutor, membership has increased and the atmosphere is excellent. The band have purchased some plastic cornets and trombones to encourage new starters.
