Scouts gives young people skills for life!
Annual Report and Accounts 2022 – 2023
Our Group
We are absolutely thrilled to share with you the incredible journey we've had over the past year. Our scout group has been dedicated to creating countless unforgettable memories, and we couldn't be prouder. Our mission has always been to nurture talented and determined young individuals while fostering a thought-provoking and caring community. And let me tell you, we have succeeded!
One of the things that sets us apart is our commitment to providing excellent value for money. We believe that everyone should have access to affordable experiences and opportunities, and that's exactly what we offer. Inclusivity is at the core of our values, ensuring that everyone, without exception, feels welcome and valued.
The growth we've witnessed in our membership and the commitment of our adult volunteers has been truly remarkable. Enthusiastic individuals have joined our sections, contributing to the vibrant scouting community we've built. This expansion has allowed us to broaden our programme offerings, creating even more opportunities for our members to engage in thrilling activities and embark on unforgettable adventures.
Our members have embraced a diverse range of activities and expeditions, fearlessly conquering challenges along the way. They have braved the heights of the climbing wall, gaining confidence and resilience with every ascent. We've also celebrated cultural diversity, exploring the rich
tapestry of other cultures and traditions. This has given us a broader perspective, fostering tolerance and understanding within our community.
One of the most cherished moments for our
scouts is gathering around a crackling campfire. Whether it's during one of our sleepovers, camps, or a troop night, they revel in the timeless tradition of singing campfire songs and building
camaraderie. The delightful aroma of toasted
marshmallows fills the air as they bond over shared stories and experiences. These moments forge lasting memories and create deep connections among our members. We are truly privileged to provide all our members with access to these exhilarating experiences, which impart valuable
lessons in independence, teamwork, and outdoor skills.
Teamwork lies at the heart of scouting, and our young members have consistently demonstrated their ability to work together and overcome
challenges. Whether it's engineering the fastest Mario Kart at a Beaver sleepover, creating their own music video, conquering the heights of the climbing wall, or embarking on a team-based caving adventure during a Scout summer camp, our scouts have honed their teamwork, problemsolving, and resilience skills. These skills are truly invaluable for life.
In the spirit of giving, 3rd Washington Scouts and our families came together during the Christmas period to create and deliver over 70 food hampers, supporting members of our local community in need. This compassionate initiative embodies the true essence of scouting and emphasizes the importance of compassion and solidarity.
our group. With her support over the past 15 years we have been able to achieve so much!
It is with sadness that we say goodbye to Alison Nicholson as she steps back from her executive role. Alison has been a parent representative since 2015 and has played a vital part of our group executive. She has supported, challenged, and offered an alternative prospective on many initiatives as well as developed our ‘Up-cycle Exchange’ initiative which has brought uniform and scouting gear to our families. Thank you, Alison, for all you have done for our community – you’ll be a huge miss!
As we reflect on the past year, we are filled with gratitude for the continuous growth of our scout group, the exceptional achievements of our members, and the unwavering dedication of our adult volunteers. We have fostered an inclusive and supportive environment that empowers all our members, including our adults, to reach their full potential.
We also take immense pride in celebrating the remarkable achievements of all our members. Our adult volunteers deserve a special round of applause for their unwavering dedication to fostering an enriching scouting experience. Their mentorship and guidance have played a crucial role in providing holistic development opportunities for all young people in our scout group. We extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of them.
With great enthusiasm, we look forward to the upcoming year as we continue to create an engaging and purposeful scouting experience for all our members. recognition is a We are thrilled to testament to their announce the commitment and recent opening of invaluable a Squirrel Drey contributions to our within our scout scout group. group, providing young children aged 4-6 with the opportunity to Our Group Executive embark on their scouting journey early on. Our Charity
The trustees have pleasure in presenting their annual report and financial statements for the year end, 31st March 2023.
The legal and administrative details of the Group are shown elsewhere in this report. The financial statements comply with current statutory requirements, Policy, Organisation and Rules of the Scout Association (POR), and the Statement of Recommended Practice – Accounting and Reporting by Charities (2005).
Objectives of the Group
The group was formed in 1975 by the adoption of POR by the founding group leaders, who also acted as trustees. The Group’s aim, in common with that of the Scout Association, is the physical, mental and spiritual development of young people. The group meets the Charity Commission’s public benefit criteria under both the advancement of education and the advancement of citizenship or community development headings.
Organisation
The group is managed by the Group Executive Committee, the members of which are the Charity Trustees of the scout group which is an educational charity. As charity trustees they are responsible for complying with legislation applicable to charities. This includes the registration, keeping proper accounts and making returns to the Charity Commission as appropriate. The section leaders of the Group are trustees by virtue of their position as a leader.
was for £7,000 from The Scout Association to the Cost of Living Support Fund.
The 2022 Gift Aid income was £3,686.50. Almost all families make use of the Gift Aid Scheme and I would like to pass on my thanks to them. If you pay income tax directly or on personal investments you can help the Group in this way. We claim the tax you have already paid and it costs you nothing. Please see any leader, if you wish to discuss Gift Aid.
Policy on reserves
The Group’s policy on reserves is to hold sufficient resources to continue the charitable activities of the group should income and fundraising activities fall short. The trustees consider that the group should hold a sum equivalent to 3 months’ running costs, circa £7,500.
Risk management
The trustees have identified the major risks to which they believe the group is exposed to, these have been reviewed and systems have been established to mitigate against them. The Group does not have sufficient funds to invest in longer term investments and has, therefore, adopted a risk averse strategy to the investment of its funds. All funds are held in cash using only mainstream UK banks. The systems and internal controls in-place are designed to provide reasonable assurance against material mismanagement or loss, these include two signatories for all payments and a comprehensive insurance policy to ensure that insurable risks are covered.
Investment powers
The group’s investment powers are set out in Policy Organisation and Rules, available from the Scout Association.
Review of activities and future developments
We are an active and aspirational scout group who hold ourselves to the highest of standards. Out activity offer is vast and encapsulates inclusivity. We actively try to push our provision which includes our meeting nights, sleepovers and camps as well as personal growth for our adult volunteers. We have recently made huge developments by opening our own Squirrel Drey which is aimed at young people aged 4 – 6. This will continue to develop and grow as experience and confidence flourishes with working with this age range.
Grant making policy
The Group does not have a policy in respect of making grants.
