Valentine Singers

Chair’s Report

For the year 2024-25

Clare Gailans

We have had another good year thanks to the hard work of many people, very generous financial help and the commitment of all of us.

Your Committee have worked very hard as they always do, and two of them are stepping down. Esther has been a wonderfully efficient Treasurer for five years, but now needs to give more time to work and other responsibilities, as does Livia who has looked after various things including much relating to publicising the choir and acting as our safeguarding lead. You will remember that Andre was re-elected to the Committee last year, but he has not found it possible to continue with us. I thank them and also Jacqui, Angela, Lindsey and Bill for all that they have done for us, and feel sure that Livia and Esther will still help us wherever they can, as all of you do. Oliver is no longer co-opted on to the committee, but continues to look after our website, for which we are very grateful.

We are as grateful as ever to those people who have worked for us outside the committee, with sectional rehearsals, the library, tea, arranging seating, helping Lindsey make everything run smoothly on concert days and so many other things.

We have enjoyed putting on four excellent concerts. In June 2024 we celebrated life through musical shows and opera with two professional soloists in the ‘All the World on Stage’ concert. November saw us in concert singing ‘Songs of Peace’ by Will Todd and other remembrance songs. We enjoyed a Christmas concert in December singing carols with audience participation and finally in March we held a ‘Notre Dame’ concert singing Louis Vierne’s ‘Messe Solenelle’ and Brigg’s ‘Messe pour Notre Dame’. Alongside these concerts we held an open workshop in January 2025 and two open rehearsals in the autumn term. We were privileged to work with some fine soloists and, most importantly, Christine and Tim, without whom none of this would have been possible.

Other happy events have been our second singing trip to East Tilbury, visits to concerts in London, carols at Valentine’s Mansion, and welcoming new members Janice and Anna. Sadly we have lost two popular members of long standing, Barbara Fisher and Martin, but Martin has joined Heather, Barbara Nunn and Pat as a Friend of the choir. Other members have taken breaks and some of them may not return, hence our lower tally of subscriptions and smaller audiences.
