Nanstallon Pre-School Chairperson’s Report September 2020 - August 2021
Nanstallon Pre-School is situated at the heart of the community, working in partnership with parents and community groups to provide high quality care in the very best facilities, in a small village setting.
We are fortunate to have a purpose built, eco-building offering a bright and spacious area in which we aim to give each child the best start in life by laying solid foundations for future learning; where children can explore the world around them, establish friendships, develop imagination, share, cooperate with others, gain confidence to initiate and try out new ideas, seek new challenges, make new discoveries, and most of all have great fun and develop a love of learning.
We are registered with OFSTED and currently hold a ‘Good’ outcome from our last inspection in June 2017. We provide sessional day care, welcoming children from age two years and three months to five years. We have qualified, experienced, friendly staff who provide a fun, caring environment for the children to learn through play and adult led activities. Our Pre-School Manager, Vicky Lafford, has Early Years Teacher Status.
Nanstallon Pre-School has had another successful year. We welcomed a new Charity Co-Ordinator, Chantelle Hill, to the Pre-School earlier in the year and the children have been extremely busy with all the activities the Manager and staff plan and implement, including Forest School sessions. From a business perspective we have continued to see success and growth with an ever-growing waiting list, many visitors and new starters.
The Pre-School currently has 44 children enrolled with us, with a further 47children on the waiting list. Over the year we do our best to accommodate as many children as possible without compromising our policy of small group numbers and trying to offer parents the sessions they require.
We are planning on continuing to provide taster sessions for new starters where parents with children that are due to start with us are invited into Pre-School for a couple of sessions. They have been a great success in the past and very enjoyable for both the children and parents. They offer children the opportunity to play with the toys and to get used to Pre-School whilst the parents can meet the staff, to ask any questions and can see their child enjoying themselves in the setting. These relaxed and informal sessions enable children to feel more confident when they first start

with us, allowing them to they settle much more quickly, providing an easier transition. They also provide parents/carers with the opportunity to meet other parents, offering them the chance to make friends and build a support network.
This year we have been fortunate enough to be able to get back to hosting fundraising activities, following the Covid-19 restrictions, and have had some very successful events including a Christmas Hamper Raffle Bonanza, a Bingo Night, Easter Raffle and recently some of our staff and parents took part in the annual Ten Tors sponsored walk, plus we have raised money for other charities including Comic Relief and Sport Relief. The funds raised so far this year have allowed us to completely renovate the outdoor play area which now provides a safe and creative environment for our children to explore. Our outdoor facilities aim to provide a safe and stimulating environment, whatever the weather, which not only supports outdoor learning and encourages creative play but offers the opportunity to get muddy and wet, where children can let off steam and exercise while having fun.
Despite the ongoing challenges facing the childcare sector, Nanstallon PreSchool continues to be a thriving charity, which is supported by the local community and many local families, both from the village and surrounding areas. The majority of our children feed into Nanstallon Primary School, in whose grounds the Pre-School sits, thus allowing the transition from PreSchool to Primary to be as smooth as possible. We have 22 children leaving us at the end of term ready to start the next step in their school journey; we wish them the best.
We pride ourselves on our small village feel and on running a very professional and friendly Pre-School.

2. Depreciation
Please note that no charge for depreciation of equipment has been included this year. It is not an actual expense of the pre-school and was a provision to reflect the effective reduction in the value of equipment. As all new equipment is written off in the Income and Expenditure Account when it is incurred, the written down value of the equipment detailed on the Balance Sheet of £4,023 is carried forward to represent the value of all equipment held by the pre-school at 31 August 2021.
